My advice is, don't go all out on gifts for a one year old, as they will not care one lick, and probably just play with the box it comes in!
My son will turn one in early March and I am looking for ideas for a birthday gift! What gifts have you given for 1 year olds birthday? Thanks!

New bath tub toys :)
The favorite toy she got on her first birthday was a stacker/sorter from Melissa & Doug.
We just gave a book with $20 tucked inside for the parents to put towards a zoo membership. They requested memberships to kid places, but we can't afford to give them one by ourselves so we explained that the cash was for what they asked. We had othe friends that we suggested do the same thing.
Books!!! Great, classic board books. For example, anything by Eric Carle, C is for Coco, Goodnight moon, etc. They don't take up space, they're educational, and they last forever. Perfect for the baby who doesn't need any more toys!
Consider toys for your little one to grow into! He'll go through a LOT of developmental changes between now and the next big gift-giving season. After his birthday is over, put most of his gifts into the closet, and pull one out every month or so when he starts looking for new things to do.
Our daughter wasn't very physically active, so I'm not sure if these suggestions would be as helpful for you, but she loved:
Books, books and more books. As others have suggested, board books are the sturdiest.
Chunky wooden puzzles with knobs (ours are Melissa and Doug brand)

Shopping Cart...This Fischer-Price one ended up being sturdy enough that it doesn't flip over when she climbs on it: http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Laugh-Learn-Shop-Walke...
Also check out: http://fatbraintoys.com. It's a great retailer website with lots of unusual toys. They have great product reviews. You can search for toys most frequently played with by a particular age and gender.
Happy shopping!
Books are great!! I also got my daughter heavy duty puzzle with big pieces and knobs... The animal ones are her favorite. She's still playing with the same two she got for her first birthday almost 8 months ago.
One of my favorite birthday gifts when my son turned one was swimming lessons. If you want a tangible gift, blocks or art supplies are great. Blocks can be used for many years and art supplies are used UP.
Congrats on making it a year! :)
My daughter LOVES this ride in/push car. Of course you can get it in another color for your son. :)

There is also a super cute chair that she feel very grown up sitting in.

Another thought it a swing that hangs from the tree. Those are just a few thoughts that my daughter got for her birthday and absolutely loved. Good luck and happy birthday to your son! :)
I am very practical so I got a potty chair to start making the potty fun, big kid bedding for a big kid room, socks, pajamas, etc. At one, they still don't really care about presents!
One of her favorite toys was a Xylophone I bought her when she was one. I searched high and low for the one made by Little Tykes (or was it Fisher Price??) But anyways, it was the more well built one. It had nice tones and lasted well enough that we still have it for when younger children come to visit. Because it was a nicer one, the tones didnt make me crazy when she got to banging away on it. I like to encourage musical development in kids and "starter" instruments like this are good gifts.
A high-quality xylophone. :) We got our son one that was around $35 and had a wooden body with really pleasant-sounding metal keys. I know it is European (sold here), but I can't remember what brand it is. I always think books and music are great things. Have fun!
