My suggestions would be to spend 1/2 of that on a gift and ask them to put the other 1/2 into savings :)

I like the idea of a ride on toy, water table, inflatable ball pit with balls, slide, etc. Just really depends on what he/she already has at home and what mom and dad are okay with you buying! For the younger kids, I always preferred cash for savings account!

How about a balance bike, or a convertible trike/ scooter with a parent push bar. We got a lot of mileage out of both.

Sit and spin was another big hit.

I like the idea of a pop-up tent/tunnel contraption. We used these FOREVER, from playdates, to movie nights to sleepovers. Lots of bang for your buck and when you're tired of looking at them, they can be put away quite easily. Welcome to Mamapedia!

We got my granddaughter a radio flyer stroller with all terrain wheels that turned into a push trike and then just a regular trike. Works for kids 1 - 5 yrs old and getting now would get the full use out of it.

My granddaughter LOVES it! She didn't really get much use the first couple of months due to winter time, but she is 1.5 now and they use it every day.

Also, another gift we bought was a picnic table that could be used indoors and outdoors and was low to the ground. She loves that immensely as well.

Membership to a local zoo or children's museum.

One of the best gifts we got when my oldest was about 18 months was a set of Playhut pop up tents, the kind with tubes that connect larger pop up tents. My boys are 4 and 7 now and still play with it, but my youngest just took it to the sitters and it was a hit with the toddlers as well.

Depends, is this your own child or are you going to be carrying it and they have to take it home. If it would work out well, a water table would be a hit. Also, any of the v-tech or leapfrog items that are for that age group. My mom got my son a Vtech dog that made noises and when you pressed the button it said what the thing was. I cannot remember the name but I know it had shapes and colors. My son loved it until my daughter put it somewhere in our basement. Also, duplo blocks. He still plays with them.

Ride-on toys, blocks, stacking toys, manipulatives, anything that they can start to sort or identify colors with.

Honestly, I wouldn't go all out on a gift for a first birthday. The kid isn't going to have any idea what's going on, has no clue what a birthday is, and isn't going to get snarked off if he gets socks instead of an iPad.
For my daughter's first birthday, I got her a few second hand toys from a thrift store, and we had cake and ice cream with my parents and my sister.

100 is a lot for a one year old. Is this for your son or someone else's? If its someone else's my answer differs. I wouldn't want anyone buying my kid some big bulky thing that goes in the house, but if I really liked it and I knew exactly where to put it I would be all for it. My kids liked the kitchens (although that was more around 2) they really liked any ball popper toy, my son loved balls so he had a bunch of little footballs and baseballs and basketballs. They really liked this house....

Tricycle or plasma car.

If you are willing to spend that much why not get a Little Tykes slide cube. I got one for my grand kids bedroom and they played on it from their toddler years clear through kindergarten. I had one in my toddler room, pre-school 1 and 2 classrooms, and in Pre-K in my child care business. It passed as a 2 step slide and indoor climbing toy.

I looked all around to find my home one too. I got it from Sears for $80. Everywhere else had the same exact toy for well over $100. But Sears ordered it on Monday or Tuesday before Christmas and they had it in the store on Thursday, the day before Christmas. I thought that said a lot about their company.

You can also find them online on such sites and Ebay for good prices too.

Sand and water tables are fun too but please don't get this age child one. they can tip over and drown in the slightest amount of water. Their head out weighs their chest until they are closer to 2-2 1/2.

Stacking toys & those toys that lightly shoot out the little balls thru tubes...those were always the big winners with all my boys at this age!

A trip to the zoo/aquarium.
