18 Month Old W/ Sensitive Skin? Allergies?

My little guy was diagnosed with super sensitive skin (called uticaria) by an allergist. For months he has had a rash on his chin. It used to start looking red after he ate and then would go away as soon as his skin was clean and dry but now it is pretty much there all the time. It is red with little red bumps on it. It doesn't seem to bother him but it looks terrible. I have tried using Aquaphor, Vaseline, Gerber's Teeny Faces, and have noticed no difference - in fact it may be making it worse. Anyone have experience with this? Any products I should try? Do I need to go to the doctor, if so allergist or dermatologist? THANKS!!

What can I do next?

There are so many products out now with no dyes and colors... My oldest daughter has really sensitive skin, I found the Aveeno products to work really well. We really have to watch laundry soaps, nothing in her bath water, as soon as she washes her hair and body she has to come out so she doesn't sit in the water. I use the Aveeno lotion on her for when it gets dry... There are even some material that bugs her.. I wish you the best of luck... Just start reading every lable...A.

My daughter has food allergies and when she eats certain foods she used to break out around her mouth first. Now that we know what foods cause that reaction in her, and stopped letting her eat things with her allergens in them, she stopped breaking out.
I'm not sure if your doctor has done the blood test to check for food allergies, but it might be worth checking out.

I have had skin allergies for all my life. Staying clear from fragrances and dyes is key. Petroleum also seems to be a contributor (even though a dermatologist won't tell you that.) Here's a list of things that do work:

Laundry soap: Nellie's all-natural laundry soda
nellieslaundry.com

Shampoo: Paula's Choice (I've used it on both of my kids and everyone that I recommend it to loves it!)
cosmeticcop.com

Lotion: Arbonne Baby Care (I've seen pictures of babies with severe skin rashes become cleared up in a matter of days.) I do sell Arbonne skin care products and give 35% discount. If you are interested you can order directly from me ____@____.com or you can find a distributor from their site arbonne.com
Best of luck, L.

Hello, I read the other response. If it happens to be a yeast infection. (really common... Nystatin cream can be perscribed and is quite cheep).
I have been struggling with really bad skin and a bad rash on my belly this pregnancy and I found that Johnson's Softwash body wash (I chose the 1/3 baby lotion, hydrating). It is new and in the adult liquid bath soap department. It is the only thing that made my skin rash go away. My son's have really bad skin when the weather changes and this has been really helping them also.
Worth a try. Take care.

My daughter used to drool really bad and her chin and neck got just raw even though I did my best to keep it clean. Then my Mom took out the Cornstarch and slapped some on and it went away. Put a little in a small bowl and when it gets red just dip your finger in and dab it on. It's safe and easy and I hope it works for you.
Good luck,

Hi J.-
I would think that a dermatologist would be able to give you the proper treatment for your child, maybe even some samples if cost is an issue for you. Also, have you tried any of the Shaklee products? They are generally made to be ultra-safe for sensitivities.

These products are great for sensitive skin. I would love to get together with you and show you about this company that I am involved with! They make products that are safer for your home that come delivered to your door! Basically it saves you time and money! I know you can't argue with that! It would take about an hour and I could come to your house. Let me know when you are available. Oh and if you are interested in making some extra money it is soooo simple! All you do is refer other customers. The best part is there is no risk! Everything has a money back guarantee. If you try a product and you don't like it they will give you your money back!

Let me know if you are interested!

Hi J.,

Do you think washing his clothes and bedding, etc. in detergent-free laundry would help?....a new product I have has allowed me to do all my wash with detergent, softeners, bleach, hot water or pre-sorting of clothes because this unit adds silver nano ions and hydroperoxides to the cold wash water before it enters the washer and so cleans and sanitizes the clothes that all that detergent & stuff isn't needed any more. see http://www.yourlaundrypure.com/aawp

Have you tried any kind of aloe vera lotion or a stem from an aloe vera plant on his skin?

As a mother of ten kids, 5 boys n 5 girls...between the new laundry technolgoy and our Fresh Air Purifier removing bacteria, odors, allergens, and more out of our air 24/7...well, I wouldn't be without either one. They've both saved us $$ and avoided a lot of ills around here.

But I haven't encountered your son's exact problem....hope you find something that works.

I never thought of that as a skin condition, my son is 2 1/2 and had the same thing when he was younger. Actually, at lunch today, all around his mouth got really red and it looked like a reaction to soemthing, but we had no idea what it was. I noticed when he had the rash all the time around his mouth, he also had a pacifier, and that seemed to make it worse. Does your son use a pacifier? I switched to a different kind that did not touch his mouth so much, but it didn't seem to help. I also tried vaseline and stuff, but that didn't help either. It eventually got better as he got older, getting off of bottles seemed to help too (i think because he gets less milk around his mouth with a sippy cup). He was around 12 months-18 months when he had the problem, but by 18 months it seemed to be going away. Have you tried poop goop? Ask your dr for a prescription for that, if it is a yeast infection that is the only thing like that that would help. Otherwise, you could try monistat cream or something too. I have known of babies that drooled a lot and got a yeast infection in their neck, and the dr gave them poop goop to get rid of it. I was also a nanny for a little girl who was given that for a diaper rash that developed into a yeast infection. My son got a HORRIBLE yeast infection at 9 months after being on an antibiotic. I thought it was just a regular diaper rash, and was putting vaseline and desitin on it, and within a day it was REALLY bad! I had to bring him to the dr, and they told me that all that stuff does is seal in the yeast, and cause it to get worse instead of better, so that caused it to get a lot worse. He ended up with a prescription yeast medicine because of how bad it was (actually bleeding), but poop goop can usually help it heal without sealing it in too. THey also told me that a talc-based baby powder rubbed on can help protect it from getting irritated too. I don't know if it is possible that your son has a yeast infection around his mouth, but I don't think it would hurt to try treating it and see if it helps. Your dr could tell you if it is though. If it isn't getting better, I would ask the dr. Good luck! I hope he gets better soon!
