I am trying to come up with an idea for my daughter's 1st birthday cake, but can't seem to decide on one. Do you have any ideas that you would recommend? Any pictures?

What can I do next?

For my son's first birthday cake we did a cupcake cake that was shaped as a 1. It was really cute. I didn't want to do anykind of theme, because he was too little to say mommy I want this kind of cake. So I did blue cupcakes that where put in the shape of a 1. I got it at Wal-Mart and they gave me a little round cake to go with it, for him to dig into. Although he hated it, but it was a cute generic idea for a 1 year old. I will definitely do the same for my daughter. I didn't want to make it this big elaborate party, because he had no clue what was going on. It was special for us, because it was just family and friends celebrating his birthday.
Good Luck!

I had a hard time figuering out what to do for my son - he doesn't really have any interest in TV - I kept saying what I should really do it get a cake with our dog on it - he LOVES the dog! I found a lady that does awesome custom cakes - she made one for my son's 1st b-day with a 3-D replica of our dogs head on top - it looked like he was coming out of the cake! And it was delicious - and the price was great! Send me your email if you'd like to see pictures. She's got a bunch of cakes on her website - www.jaynescakes.com - ours basically looked like the bulldog cake - but with our dog on top instead. And she made him his own little cake in the shape of a dog bone - it was too cute!

My son had his first birthday last year and he has a favorite teddy bear that he carries around everywhere. We had a baker create his teddy bear and then for his special cake that he eats all by himself she made a colorful balloon that the bear was holding. We made his cake he ate by himself strawberry because he is allergic to chocolate. If you would like to see a picture message me and I will send you one. Hope this helps

My son's first was a cowboy theme. We were new to Texas and went back to Louisiana to have the party at a park so we could have family and friends attend (and almost noone had met him yet), and while there we were planning on attending the Angola Prison Rodeo so the cowboy stuff seemed a natural weekend theme.
We found a cool template online for a cake shaped like a horse head (with licorice for the bridle), and a carrot for the baby's smash cake. I liked that idea a lot! I brought it in for a local baker I knew to do it for me b/c I was busy with other stuff. I like the teddy bear and balloon idea, and the dog with the bone idea that someone mentioned, too! We'll be a lot more "mellow" in parties for the next few birthdays--just the family and a friend or 2--but I think the first birthday is a big milestone and one to be celebrated. It's even big enough to be it's own theme "first birthday", and I think the smash cake matching an idea or basic theme of the "real" cake is just too cute. It's the only birthday that will actually have a separate cake just for the child, so why not make it special???

At 1, you can only assume what your child really likes, so it's kind of your call. We did sports just because ours at that age loved any kind of sport ball. I made cupcakes and decorated them like different balls (baseball, basketball, soccer ball). I made a separate cake for him that was a baseball cap. the thing is she won't care as long as she's eating some good cake :o) You could even just make cupcakes or something with colorful icing or flowers. Don't put yourself out because it is the first b-day, and you'll get many other years to go all out where they actually can enjoy and remember it. Mine talks still about his 2nd b-day (even though his 3rd is coming up in Dec), but he of course doesn't have a clue that he had a b-day party before that one. I think save all the cool ideas at least for the 2nd where they can participate. Good luck!!

With my son, he had his own cake. A small one and I had a big one for the rest of us. With my girls, I just bought cupcakes for the party and got them each one that had a candle in it. By far the cupcakes were the easiest and cleanest. Also like the previous person said-don't go all out. You'll wear yourself out and your daughter.

For my oldest daughters first birthday, we did Veggie Tales. She really enjoyed watching Veggie Tales. We had an identical small cake made for her. We had boy/girl twins 3 years later. Their birthdays are 2 weeks apart, so we decided to do a joint birthday. We had a Butterfly cake for the adults and guest and for my oldest daughter she had a small Butterfly cake. My son and youngest daughter had a blue caterpillar and a pink caterpillar cake. Because Caterpillars turn into beautiful Buterflies. What ever you choose, I am sure will be great!

I would come up with a theme first and then do the cake in that theme. We always pick out the invitations first and then have them do the cake exactly like the invitation!

I did cupcakes. They were kinda expensive, but I thought what the heck...you only have your first birthday once!

I ordered 3 flavors from Sprinkles (Chocolate, Vanilla, and Red Velvet). They are good size cupcakes so it was a perfect smash cake...he had a vanilla one.

We didn't do a theme...just had lunch and cupcakes! They were so yummy!!

I did a princess theme for my daughter's first birthday. The "adult" birthday cake was a castle and her "smash cake" was similar look to the adult cake. It was really cute!
