2 Year Old with MAJOR Constipation

My son is 2 years and a couple of months old and he has always had constipation, even as a baby, but lately it seems to be pretty bad. He has pooped only once in about 4-5 days and he had to push so hard and cried so much from pain. I felt so bad!!! I finally put a suppository up there but it couldn't help because it was one big hard ball and he just had to push it out. Sorry so graphic with the details but I don't know what I can do make this stop happening. I occasionally give him prunes or prune juice and it seems to help. However do I have to make it an everyday thing, to feed him prune or prune juice??? When he doesn't have any for a while he goes right back to being constipated. I just want him to be able to poop without hurting. I'm potty training too which is making things more difficult!!

Lots of water and peaches & plums & nectarines! My 2 year old has had this problem since she was a baby.. it's just how their digestive system works, but you can improve their diet to help them out. In the summer my daughter was almost cured, because she ate a lot of the fruits I mentioned, especially peaches!! Make sure your boy drinks plenty of water... you have to remind him and remind any childcare giver to offer him water throughout the day. Sorry that you have to go through this.. Good luck.

When this happened to my son, we would give him as many raisins as he would tolerate, pear juice and/or prune juice, and add about a teaspoon of Benefiber (green bottle of powder you can find at drugstores, target or possibly even grocery stores)a few times of day to his drinks.

Eliminate any dairy, bread or constipating types of foods and only give him fiber-rich foods until he is relieved. Is he getting a good amount of fiber-rich foods on a regular basis? Could he possibly be having too much cheese/milk/white bread products? Maybe he needs more fruits/veggies in his regular diet? Could he be dehydrated and regularly need to sip on more water?

To reduce my son's fear of trying because he was afraid it would hurt, I told him that the juice and water/raisins, etc. made his poop softer so it would not hurt any more. The more water he drinks, the easier it will be to poop. He seemed to "get" this concept.

Good luck! I know this can be so difficult but my son got past it - I hope yours does soon! Take care.

I would talk to the pediatrician, if you haven't already done so. I would look at his diet (I'm sure you thought of that), but remove all types of constipating foods, e.g., cheese. Constipation is often caused by not drinking enough water or juice and drinking TOO much milk. If he drinks a lot of milk, I'd try to decrease and increase other liquids.
My daughter's drink a lot of Apple juice which is a natural laxative (according to my ped). I started giving them grape juice for a while because they like it and they both got really constipated. Apple juice seems to always do the trick. and apples because they are high in fiber.

My daughter also had a lot of constipation. She is allergic to cows milk so she was on rice milk which was constipating. She was also allergic to soy but outgrew that allergy. We now give her 1/2 soy and 1/2 rice milk a little warmed up and that usually helps her go. Giving her prune apple juice worked for a while too. My dr. also recommended Myralax which works if she hasnt gone for a few days.
