I have a 4 month old son that constantly gets a painful looking pimple on his chin once a month. I know to not pop it, but is there anything that I can put on it when he gets it? It gets very red and always comes to a huge head.

What can I do next?

Hi M.,

First of all, What does the Dr say it is? If it's not something to worry about then just treat it like a normal abcess.

Is he allergic to Iodine? If not, go to the pharmacy and get a tub of IODEX Salve. It looks terrible, but it's just Iodine in a Petroleum Jelly Base. I've used it for any cuts, scrapes & abcesses since both my Boys were small and they're both in their 40's now! It's a great Disinfectant TOO. Stops infection before it starts. LOL

All it does is draw the pimple to a head faster and eases the pain while it does it. Just put a dab on one of the little circular bandaids and leave it on overnight while he's asleep. You may have to do it for several nights but it will soften the pimple and the head will come off on the Bandaide. Hope this helps!

Good Morning M., they used to call those Milk Bumps. Not sure if they still do. Our eldest son used to get them also right on his chin. The usually went away by themselves. I did open one at one time, put a dab of neosporin on it. That was years ago, no scar though. You could ask your Dr. to do a swab culture and have it checked.
Zane gets HUGE pimples alot, not on his face but his groin area, then on his side and back. They DO leave scars if they open up. Leaves a nasty hole on his little body. We did have a culture run and nothing serious was found. IF Fact his Ped always says Everyone has Bacteria on their skin it's just different at times how the different bacteria react. Grrrrr Then tells us if they get worse come back. Guess what, we've been back Boocoo time with HUGE pimples, he gives us the same script of antibiotic cream and sends us home. Unfortunately we can't take him to dermatologist without his Ped's OK.

HAve your Ped confirm its a milk bump in the mean time a samll dab of Neosporin could help, if it can stay on. If he take a bottle wipe his chin really well after feeding, same if breast fed.

God Bless you and your precious Little one

I had the same with my son. Wiping his chin after nursing/feeding and before naps seemed to help. And 1% hydrocortizone cream (I like Aveeno best) is what his Dr. recommended. It worked like a charm for a great many irritations.

It could be from irritation from either bottle nipples, or skin to skin rubbing (if you are nursing). Try putting a soft cloth diaper or other soft, absorbent cloth between his chin and the nipple when he nurses. Be sure to immediately wash off and thoroughly dry any milk/saliva left on his face when he finishes. I bet you'll see this go away and stay away.
Some little guys just have more sensitive skin than others.

Hi M., if you're breastfeeding the pimple is most likely from your hormones because pimples on the chin area are a direct link to hormones, this is probably from him getting one once a month. If you are not breastfeeding then it is probably from the formula blocking his pores, just as what happens with adults. I recommend putting a warm compress on it when it has a head because this will release the pressure and it will break on it's own. Make sure you do not try and extract on your own. Also, if you can keep that area extra clean, it make start to clear up (if it's formula) Good luck.

You may want to consider finding the cause. Is there something he is exposed to on a monthly basis? Are you nursing and could it be a hormonal cycle? I have seen nursing babies react to mom's hormonal changes. At 4 months the diet is usually pretty consistent and the drooling of teething has not begun, otherwise, I would suggest considering such things as causes. But, I would look for anything that happens monthly. Even things like a grandparent visiting once a month, etc. It could be a perfume or laundry detertergent he is reacting to.

The best suggestion I can offer for treating it is to apply moist heat to it occasionally. If you start doing this at the first sign, it may not get so aggravated. If you have good therapeutic grade essential oils, you could put a drop of tea tree (melaleuca) and a drop of lavender on a q-tip and apply just a touch on it as he sleeps. A very light application of neo-sporin can help, but watch that it has time to absorb and doesn't get on fingers that get into the mouth.

Good luck!

I would check with you pediatrician next time you have an appointment, but what the most effective thing I've found for my own pimples is putting a dot of toothpaste on it before bed. It helps dry it out. Check with a doctor first though, in case it could irritate his skin. The other thing you can try is cleaning his face with a gentle cleanser regularly, like Aveeno Baby Wash.
