4 Yr Old Vomitting

My 4 yr old has been throwing up for over 24 hours and cannot keep anything down at all. Luckily she is drinking tons of water but I still think she is getting dehyrdated since it doesn't stay down, so we are seeing a dr today. Is there anything you can give them to eat that will possibly set well on her belly? We've tried toast and crackers and it all comes back up so she is scared to eat anything at this point.

What can I do next?

Just FYI, my daughter has it right now too and she is on her 5th day of throwing up. She is keeping some stuff down and throwing some stuff up. So, this might not end for you in 2 days (as I saw someone write in another post).

Water always made my children throw up more so I would advise giving her about a half ounce of weak sweet tea or Seven Up about every half hour or so until the vomiting stops. She can only throw up as long as there is something in her stomach so she should not eat or drink excessantly until the vomiting has stopped. Getting her to the doctor is important since she has been throwing up for over 24 hrs. Perhaps he/she can give her some suppostitories and you both can get some much needed rest. Good luck to you!

Hi L.!
I hope your little one is feeling better today! My 15 month old son just got over that virus! It went on for two weeks! It was horrible! He wouldn't eat or drink anything and when he would, he would only eat goldfish and drink gatorade! I would just try and feed her crackers and things like that, and get her to still drink as much as possible! It just has to run its course and when she feels better she will get her appetite back! My son just now got his back and is eating like a horse and drinking tons! We all caught it so make sure that you are keeping yourself hydrated and try to keep your hands clean and all that because they say when you come in contact with the vomit that is how you get sick! My husband and I both got sick from our son and it wasn't fun! I hope she gets better soon!

the doctor can give her meds for her nausea and after 30 minutes, she'll probably be able to keep something down.
if the doctor cannot see you early this morning, have them call a prescription for nausea meds so she can take it before she goes to the doctor. Good luck and I hope she feels better. if she can take a few sips of chicken broth (with extra oregano) that can help.

My doctor is old school and writes compound scripts for nausea. Ask your doc about phenegren for children. It is a gel that comes in a syringe and you squirt in on their wrist and have them rub it into their stomache. It works great and fast! You could also offer her popsicles- that will at least keep her hydrated. Good luck!

Sounds like a stomach virus-and there's one going around. For the initial onset with the vomiting and possibly even diarreah, she won't want or can't keep down anything. Try giving the clear fluids only-water, pedialite, 7-up. But wait until the vomiting has slowed down/subsided or it will just come right back up. Then, when it's subsided you start the BRAT diet slowly. Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast(crackers, etc.). This bug takes about 2 days, and is viral if it's what she has, so a Dr. couldn't prescribe you anything for it anyway. Bedrest, someone to put a warm washcloth on her head, and get her to the toilet/bowl when she's vomiting is what she needs. Then, introduce the clear fluids, and foods slowly.

Wait a little while after the last time she threw up, then give her a teaspoon of oral rehydration solution, like pedialyte. If she can hold that down, after about 15 minutes give her another teaspoon, and so on. Don't give her solids until she has not thrown up for several hours. My two kids recently had this and it is nerve racking. My baby liked the fruit punch flavored pedialyte. My five year old doesn't like the taste of pedialyte, so we mixed the plain with sprite. She liked that. My mother-in-law also recommended rice water. You boil the rice in water(not fast rice), then drain the water off, add a little sugar and drink it. It is full of starches from the rice. One website I went to said you can make your own oral rehydration solution by mixing water with 8 teaspoons of sugar and one teaspoon of salt. The body apparently needs the salt, but the sugar acts as a carrier so the salt can be absorbed. I think the water quantity was a liter. Try the link below.

If this is the same rotavirus we all had, it is very contagious. We used a ton of lysol and soap. I washed pillows and sprayed everything in the house. Happy to report that everyone is well. She will get better, even though it seems like forever and you get so nervous everytime you try to give her anything for fear it will come right back.

Best of luck and I hope she feels better soon.

How about trying "charcoal" capsules from the health food store??? It will stop the vomiting immediately and removes the thing that is ailing her. We use it any time some has a stomach virus and so do a lot of our friends. Hope that helps.

When we had the stomach bug here, it hit me a lot harder than the kids. My dad, who is a physician's assistant, told me to take some Benadryl to help with the throwing up...it worked!! I was able to finally get some fluids in my system and start on the mend.

You could ask your pedi doc if that is okay for your child though.

Praying for that sweet baby, poor thing.
