Call your children's librarian, give her a little info on the 4th grader, and ask for suggestions. They know the favorites but also the unsung gems you might be missing.

And I love that you are giving books!!

The Secret Garden and A Little Princess by Frances Burnett Hodges are both classics with interesting female characters at the center. Try one of those!

When my son was that age Harry Potter was all the rage.

If she is a good reader, it's a good age for the Percy Jackson series, loved by both girls and boys.

ETA: This year my child of that age read and loved almost every single book mentioned in Suz's post below. All great recommendations (although I'd wait another year or two for The Outsiders since the content is a little more mature, my 7th grader just read that one).

My 9 year old daughter LOVES the Atlas series. She loves it so much. The Wings of Fire series is also very popular with all the 4th graders. Books are the best!

I just mentioned this book on the question below so it is on my mind: "Fearless Girls, Wise Women, Beloved Sisters".

It's a beautiful hardcover book of folktales about strong and smart girls/women characters. It's a book she can enjoy for years to come, as an adult too.

Warrior Cats Series was a hit here. So was Judy Blume.

What I've done is go to a online book store site, typed in age, (gender sometimes), and picked top picks for gifts, and that narrows it down for you. Tells you what's most popular overall for right now - if that helps.

If you're unsure, a gift card with a bookmark your daughter picks out herself (or even better, makes her herself) is another way to to add a personalized touch.

We just finished reading 'The One and Only Ivan' by Katherine Applegate. It's a beautifully written and fun story, and I personally had a hard time putting it down.

I think a good starting point is to look at Children's Choice, Newberry, and Caldecott award winners.
