I am expecting a baby boy in June and planning on beginning with the shopping. I want to buy something very special first , like something he would really like and keep it forever. But I have no idea what boys would find special, so need some help here ! For ex : if it was a baby girl I would have bought a gold chain with a cute little pendant or a bracelet etc . I know girls treasure such things like this was first thing mommy bought for me before I was born :)
But what would a boy like? I tried asking my husband but I guess he failed to understand the whole concept I have in mind of this 'something special' .LOL. I am sure some of you moms would know what I am talking about. Any ideas? Thanks a lot in advance.

What can I do next?

One of the best first things that were bought for my son was a piggy bank with an engraving on it. He loves it so much. Especially when he goes to my dads house and raids his coin bin and comes home with tons of change each time we get to put it in his bank. He has the best time. Then when it is time to take it to the bank he gets to carry his piggy full of his money. He loves it and it makes great memories.

someone gave my son a silver rattle engraved with his name on the ends. I thought it was a very special gift. He loved to use it when teething, felt nice and cool on his gums.

I kept a journal for almost every day of my son's first year. My mom gave him a special bear. I didn't really get him anything. I never thought to do that. Something that he might use when he gets older are cuff links. I have a pair of cuff links that were my grandfather's. (I am an only child - only girl.) Cuff links would be the equal of charm bracelet or necklace. Good luck.

When I was pregnant with my daughter I wrote a journal and wrote down a few things every couple of days of how I was feeling or if we did something in the nursery or something I had bought for her When my kids have something happen in their lives I take out their journals and write it down Only takes a few minutes and when I'm gone I think they will really enjoy reading about themselves and it's all in my own handwriting I liked writing down the funny things they would say when they were young I read them every once in a while and I say oh yeah I forgot about that! I think it's very personnal and interesting since we really don't remember very much from when we are little

Christy J from Hatom City suggested a Hanky Bonnet. Each of my sons received on of these from my parents and wore on their Baptismal day. Two of my sons have gotten married and both of their spouses had the hanky pinned inside their dress on their wedding day. I can't tell you how special that made my mom feel that something that was given to them over 30 & 21 years ago was being wore on such a important day. Both daughter-in-laws have stated that if they are blessed with children, they too will wear the hanky on their head.
Here's the poem that came with them...

A tiny square of linen
And a dainty edge of lace,
Designed into a bonnet,
To frame your baby’s face.

After baby’s worn it
Fold and tuck away...
And it becomes a hanky
For your daughter’s Wedding Day.

Or if the baby is a boy,
On the day he marries
This can be the “something old”
His joyful bride will carry.

Congrats on your upcoming baby boy!!

what about a metal dump truck (the ones that look and feel real - not the plastic kind)? that is something he will play with when he's 2 or 3 and would be able to keep forever (my 2 yr old son would LOVE one)...my husband bought one for a friend of ours son when he turned 2 - he's 8 now and still keeps it in his room - doesnt really play with it much anymore but he won't let his mom put it in storage just in case he does want to play with it again : )

It seems that boys really don't appreciate special saved items until they are having babies of their own :) What I did was bought my ex-husband a gift from my son (a special hunting rifle - not promoting guns here, just had to pick something that would mean something to him as well - a watch or something else would work, too) and had the stock engraved. He takes my son out hunting with it (also, not promoting this), and the plan is to give it to him when he has his first child. So, not only is it the "first gift," there are special memories attached to it spending time with dad, and then he will get it and get to spend special time with HIS child and can share how Grandpa got this gift and share their memories of stalking poor, innocent bambi out in the woods :)

Good luck!

I made both my boys Teddy Bears from build-a-bear. They are 6 and 4 and love them very much!

In my family, we make our own Christmas Stockings and I made all my kids' right around the time they were born and I incorporated their "coming home from the hospital outfits" into their stockings...this is my one thing that I know they will keep for forever!---I still have mine from when I was born!

I am sure whatever you come up with will be brilliant because it came from M.!

My boys each received one of those little hankie bonnets with a little poem. It is a nice hankerchief that is sewn into a bonnet. Typically worn at Christening or other special event then tucked away. He can wear at his wedding, or give to his bride as a "something old" It was special for M. to have this for my boys because everyone in my family had one (2 boys, 2 girls) and as we got married, we pulled out those little bonnets and mom cuts a thread, daugher/son cut thread, etc. . . It is something that takes time to mature, but a precious gift.

My husband will inherit a few pocket watches that have been passed down from generation to generation in his family. He bought a few really nice watches before we got married to be able to pass to his children for special occasions (college graduations, marriage, etc).

I'd think that would be a pretty cool gift for a boy, personally.

Hope that helps.

I struggled with the EXACT SAME thing. I wanted something that could transcend generations, something that may be passed down... something that would be special and meaningful and beautiful.

So after much soul searching, shopping, thinking and agonizing I found a beautiful heirloom quality cradle. http://www.bassinetsandcradles.com/prod/old_world_cradle_...
To lay my son in this cradle on the very first night he came home, to see him sleeping there and know that one day his own child would sleep in that same cradle - - Oh, it brings tears to my eyes even now.

I have sweet sweet photos of him all swaddled, laying there so small.
It's a full page in his baby book with a beautiful poem:

"Tonight as you lay sleeping
for the first time in your bed
there must be something lasting
and profound that should be said."

"But as your faced is gazed upon
framed by your soft, sweet hair
Nor words can tell or quite express
The feelings that we share."

"The wait is finally over
You're home at last to stay
And there will always be the memories
Of the joy that filled this day"

"With a love that's running over
By the sight of you alone
Welcome home, dear cherished one,
At long last, Welcome Home"

- Good luck and congratulations.

The General Store in Minnetonka will personalize a piggy bank. They are so cute. My sister-in-law has bought them for each of our children and we love them. Also, my kids each have a special music box. My oldest's is a sculpture of wolves. My next son has one that looks like an old cigar box, but has moving parts when you open it. I think I ordered it from Hearthsong.

I like the suggestions of a nice pocket watch or a chain with a cross on it. You could also get a nice cross to hang on the wall and have it personalized. You could have a little metal figurine engraved....like a nice train or car or something. Here is a train/piggy bank that can be engraved: http://www.thingsremembered.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet...~

My brother still has a Pooh bear that he got when he was a baby. I still have a nice framed picture of my mom and dad when they got married. My friend has a wood chest that his dad made for him before he was born.

My brother got a stuffed cow as an infant. That cow was like another appendage over the years. My mom had to sew legs and eyes back on many times. My brother is 38 now and still has his beloved "cow". Another idea is a really nice piggy bank (sliver one or something). You can a penny in it each night when you tuck him in bed...when he is old enough, he can do this himself. Hope these help!

My father-in-law gave my son a gold cross for his baptism (which he wore pinned to his suit) and we bought the chain for him to wear when he's older. As his parents, though, we invested in a beautiful wooden glider that will be "his" for the rest of his life. Hopefully he will rock his children in it. We plan to do this for each of our children, as they come along.

Try not to get too worried... the fact that your husband didn't "get it" pretty much predicts how your son may feel! They're boys... they don't get excited about these things. We do, though, so find something that will remind YOU of the excitement you felt about getting ready for his arrival and know that his wife will treasure it someday!

Something as simple as a very special baby blanket that he will keep and pass along or, if you are religious, his first bible with his name etched on it in gold?
