I have a girlfriend who can't have kids on her own in fact her husband left her because of that ($%U&&*!)She is single and after 40. She would love to adopt a child. But she told me that is very hard or impossible to adopt a child for single person even from China. Do any of you know if there is any possibility that she could adopt? Where, what, how? She is the sweetest person in the world, and I really would like to help her.

What can I do next?

Suggest she contact a few gyno docs around champaign Illinois. I know of two families who adopted there from college students who wanted to give up their babies. Granted these were couples who adopted, but i would bet if she's willing to stay in touch with the birth mother she would have a good chance of success.

I also have another thought. Can she not get pregnant because her eggs are old or does she have blockage issues. I know a reflexologist who has a 100% success rate with removing blockages to allow women to get pregnant who couldnt. If she wants more info on that let me know. A friend of mine who was told she couldnt have kids now has a baby girl after seeing him.

So sorry her husband left her because of that. I say she's better off without a guy like that.

Why China? What's wrong with the hundred thousand babies and children in homes right in our country. Even foster care give the opportunity to share love and give of herself to another human being that needs it desperately.

Hi P.,
I know there are different Catholic agencies that help with adoption although I don't know their policies as far as single parents are concerned. I would google adoption and see what you come up with.

Try The Cradle in Evanston great for domestic and international adoptions.
or Lutheran Social Services of Illinois for domestic only.

Good Morning P. S,

I wish the very best for your friend. I was in the same situation. I adopted 2 boys through Ada S. McKinley Social Services. I first was a foster parent. I informed Ada that I was interested in fostering children that I would be able to adopt. I did not want to deal with families that wanted to battle over the children. Ada has a listing of children that will never return to their biological families for many reasons and need someone to love and nurture them. The Department of Children and Family Services is another Service that your friend could possibly look into.
When I had made up my mind that I wanted to adopt, I searched many different adoption agencies, but the cost were to much for me. Through the Social Service Agencies, the cost is covered by the agency(at least that was the rule in 2007). Again tell your friend good luck.

With determination, anything is possible. Prayer helps, too! Check out www.caffa.org (Chicago Area Families for Adoption). There was a seminar in March which had speakers which included single adoptions. You might request any info from that seminar, which would give contact information for the speakers. Also, I know of adoptions to single moms through Foster to Adopt programs, but the childrens were special needs. Best wishes! I became a mom through adoption, at age 44. It is the best thing we have ever done.

Has she looked into foster care. There are many children who need good stable and permanent homes in the foster care system. Finding good pre-adoptive homes for these children is sooooooo hard. If you want more details fell free to send me a private message.

How nice you asked! Yes, she can adopt! May I suggest Ukraine? It will be closed adoption, she will need one trip (about one month in length). I have been involved in some projects helping orphans from Ukraine, so I can help any way I can. I would love to see a child to find a loving home, so many of them need help, wonderful, beautiful, lovely kids with not much of a future ahead of them.
Good luck,and God Bless!

Yes, yes, yes she can still adopt!! I adopted when I was single and 45, and it was very easy. There are at least 3 agencies that welcome singles in the Chicago area: Family Resource Center, Adoption Link, and The Cradle. My daughter is from Chicago, and we have a very comfortable open adoption. If she's open to taking a non-white child, and open to gender, her expenses and wait-time are greatly diminished. There's also a wonderful organization called "Single Mothers By Choice" that provided me much inspiration. I'd be happy to talk with her...

The Cradle in Evanston does permit single-parent applicants. They offer domestic, international and adoptions for children with special needs. Your single friend can become a parent, but it appears that this is something that she is going to have to put time and energy (and $$!) into. I believe domestic adoptions start at $15,000. International another $5,000 more. But, certain agencies offer lower rates for welcoming children from different groups that are harder to place. Also, there are grants, tax incentives, employee assistance and other means to finance adoption. She is correct in that some foreign adoptions have stipulations regarding same-gender, single, etc. The Cradle website has info about that.

China does not allow singles to adopt anymore, they tightened up with many more rules (this is just one)to exclude people because there are many more waiting families than what they call paper ready children. Have your friend call an adoption agency to find out what countries are open to single moms. Good luck to her.

I have a friend that adopted a 2 year old African American girl. She was single & in her mid 40's when she adopted her. It will be hard to get a new born. Her best chance is a domestic child of ethnic origins.

I hope your friend is successful in adopting! When she does, I have the perfect book for her- http://www.barefoot-books.com/us/site/pages/browseandbuy..... It's called Motherbridge of Love, and it makes me cry every time I read it. Here is a reading of the book- http://www.barefoot-books.com/us/site/pages/motherbridge.php.
Such a perfect gift for anyone adopted, adopting, or just to assist in talking to your children about adoption. :)

Wishing luck to your friend in finding her child,
