Hi moms,

I would like to ask if any of you had experience with domperidone to increase milk supply.
I see a lot of controversial posts on internet and really need to know if any of you had tried this. I know about all other methods like pumping, drinking, feeding on demand, fenugreek and others.
All of this does not work for me since I am working mom of 3.
Also my 7 month old baby doesn't like to stay on the breast for long time to stimulate milk production.
She does not take bottle or cup ether.
I am pumping at work but it seams not near enough she should be getting.
We give her my breast milk or some formula during a day with spoon feeding as well mixed with solid foods.
Also I keep nursing at night.

What can I do next?

Hey L., Something I have found works is mother's milk tea. I just tried it recently and noticed a big difference not only in my milk amounts but quality (more cream like than watery). You can get it from the grocery store, the brand I use is Traditional Medicinals Organic Mothers Milk, it doesn't taste too bad and you can add a little honey. Good luck!!!

L., domperidone is only effective for certain situations. I would recommend that you see a lactation consultant. She could not only assess whether or not it may be helpful for your situation, but give you lactation management tips that might help too. I'm sorry this isn't more helpful, but your situation is somewhat complicated and can't be answered easily. Hugs!

Hi L.,

A La Leche League leader (find one at www.llli.org, under resources, find local groups/leaders) or a lactation consultant at a hospital, or Children's Hospital in Denver all have access to Medications and Mother's Milk, a book published by Dr. Thomas Hale, the expert on drug interactions and milk production. They could give you accurate information about the differences between Reglan and Domperadone which may help you in your decision. You could call your OB, but most OBs, for whatever reason, do not keep a copy of this book, which is invaluable in helping mothers determine which drugs to use when nursing or pregnant.

Good luck!

Domperidone is my lifesaver. I am on my third baby with it because I just don't make enough without. Inhouse Pharmacy is the bext place to get it on the internet without a perscription but if you are nervous abou tthat I got a prescription from my lactation consultant who is a nurse at my ob's office. There are compounding pharmacies here in the US but they are so much more expensive than the ones overseas. And you don't need a prescription for it on the website I told you about. It usually takes about 1 week to kick in when you take 3 3x a day. sometimes I forget a dose and then I take 6 at a time. It doesn't have any side effects for the baby and you will notice that you might get a bit munchy. It doesn't cause you to eat but it doesn't allow your appetite to turn off if that makes any sense. So I just try to pay attention to what I am eating.
I tried everything with my babies and finally found this. I swear by it.
If you have any other questions please feel free to message me. I feel I am somewhat of an expert on domperidone because I have talked several women through it's use.
Good luck

There is a prescription drug called Reglan that I used to up my supply. It should only be taking temporarily and then your supply should stay up. I used it and it worked for me. There are side effects like increased chance of post partum depression, though.

When my first baby was born she had to stay in the NICU for awhile and could not nurse at first. I asked mydoctor to prescribe somethign for me to help bring my milk in, after 3 days I was getting nothing when I pumped, so he prescribed metoclopramide which, like domperidone, has a side effect of increasing prolactin thereby increasing milk supply. These days domperidone is prescribed rather than metoclopramide because the metoclopramide can also cause depression. Domperidone has not been found to increase your risk for depression, although some mothers who take it will suffer from post-pardum depression there is no link to the drug. Using the prescription worked wonders for me, it really worked WELL to say the least! In fact I did not use up all the pills that were prescribed because my milk came in really quickly and I did not need the meds anymore. I was also taking fenugreek which can also be effective, it is recommended that you take fenugreek with blessed thissle as well, they work great in combination. A friend of mine takes liquid tinictures of fenugreek and blessed thissle and she produces tons of milk, she only has to pump every 4 hours or so and she gets 8-10 oz. each time she pumps so she has plenty for her baby. As for the whole bottles thing, I have used syringe feeding for my babies when they were little since they hatd bottles too and it worked great. Good luck, and congratulations on giving your baby the best nutrition possible.

I haven't tried domperidone....But try documenting when you pump, nurse, drink water, eat, and your milk supply.....just for a few days you may notice some trends that can help you out. You maybe eating less than you think, remember you need extra calories.

Maybe using a different pump would help? Have you tried using a hospital grade pump already? You can rent them to try them. Hang in there you'll get through all this!

I know of two moms who have used domperidone to increase supply. I think one o them is a La Leche League Leader based in Logan, Utah, if I remember my discussion with her correctly. Check out www.llli.org and look for her number listed under "resources" and "find local groups." I think S. in Logan can help you with this, or refer you to the Leader who does have successful domperidone experience.
The other mom I know used it was struggling to get supply up for a premie. She kept meticulous records and was very consistent about extra pumping, extra time at the breast in combination with domperidone. I understand it's most effective if used in the first little while of establishing lactation, and it did help her a lot, but it could be helpful in your situation, too. You sound like you're well-educated about the realities of supply and demand an have been working really hard to make sure your baby gets enough--I am so impressed with your devotion.
I understand domperidone is not a quick-fix, but can help a lot if used in combination with the extra stimulation of more time at the breast and/or more pumping. I know studies show prolactin hormone levels are highest in the very early morning, so it is highly beneficial to your milk supply to keep Baby near you for frequent nursing at night and especially to pump or nurse in the early morning hours.
You didn't offer details about why you're sure she isn't getting enough--is she dehydrated or struggling with failure to thrive? Is her elimination pattern OK? That's a good gague of if she's gettig enough. . . I hope you are dealing with false alarms more than a real problem.
Please keep us updated. I will be thinking of you! Best wishes.

i recently learned that estrogen plays a part in milk production. i had my hormone levels tested and it turns out my estrogen is very very low. no wonder all the extra pumping wasn't working for me!

I used domperidone to increase my milk supply with my son (now 20 months). It made ALL the difference for me! I was drinking tons of water & mother's milk tea, taking fenugeek, pumping... you name it. My milk supply was just low. It may have been due to losing a lot of blood in childbirth? Not sure?

In any case, I took 4 pills a day for about 8 months and then slowly cut down to 1 pill over about 3 months. (Remember it does take a week or two to start working.) When my son was about 1 year I stopped the pills and my milk supply remained. At that point he was only nursing 2 times per day, however and eating/drinking regular food and milk. We nursed until he was 18 months and it was an incredible experience for me/us. I never thought I was going to be able to continue, but I am so happy domperidone worked out for me. Also, I had absolutely NO side effects or issues!! Good luck and let us know what happens!

I took Reglan for my first baby and it did increase my supply a bit (all of that other stuff-the tea, the fenugreek, extra liquids etc etc also did not work for me). I requested domperidone from my doctor with my second, since the Reglan had some emotional side effects. The lactation consultant said it worked the same as Reglan (dopamine blocker) but w/o the craziness that comes along with it. Lo and behold, my Doctor and all 4 other Drs (Louisville, Colorado) at the practice do not prescribe domperidone since the FDA pulled it off the market since it caused heart issues in extended clincal trials. This sounds scary to me--think of all the dangerous drugs the FDA does NOT pull off the shelf, let along the ones it does. At this point in time, you can get the drug made special through a formulary, but don't ask me how the manufacturer is dealing with the heart issues. I ended up taking Reglan the second time but could only pump for 6 weeks. Anyway, good luck!
