Anybody Have Experience with Rotavirus?

My 2 year old son threw up three times this past Saturday and had a low fever. Yesterday, he started having diarrhea all day long (he still has it today), but he is now also throwing up. He is going to the doctor today, but I'm thinking it might be rotavirus. Not only is he throwing up and have diarrhea, he has pink eye and an ear infection. At first, I thought that the antibiotic for the ear infection (Amoxicillin) was causing his diarrhea, but now that he is throwing up as well, I am leaning towards rotavirus. Our friend's 2 year old had rotavirus last week and the dad stopped by our house last Wednesay. On Saturday is when the throwing up and low fever began. Any thoughts?

So What Happened?

Well, he does have a virus although the doctor didn't specify if it was the rotavirus or not. He got one shot and I was told that that should clear up his pink eyes, ear infections and his upset belly. Hopefully it will work. And the doctor told me to sterilize my bathroom since the virus could hang around for awhile.

Hi T.,

I am not sure I've had experience with Rotavirus (was never diagnosed) but I will tell you, I would highly HIGHLY reccomend getting Culturelle for Kids from Walgreens: http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=100175&a...# They have a Culturelle for kids and it does WONDERS in solving any sort of bowel troubles. Do some of your own research on probiotics if you get a chance but I will tell you, I have had HUGE success myself with them and with my kids. I was turned on to it when a family member came down with C-Diff (http://www.webmd.com/news/20080530/c-diff-epidemic-what-y...) from working in a hospital and when doctors were prescribing antibiotics which weren't working, he tried Culturelle- within two days it was completely cleared up (after he'd had it going on two weeks and lost a TON of weight). Having watched that, I have been hooked on them ever since. Any time my kids get diarrhea (rare these days) I give it to them and it's cleared up within a day or two. The biggest plus is it's not a drug and great for them!

Hope this helps and best of luck!

Hope your little one is feeling better. Just a word of advice, to stop the virus from infecting the whole house, you should disinfect door knobs/handles and lightswitches in the whole house, not just the bathroom. Those are the surfaces that people "share" the most and don't really think about.

In our house the rotavirus got us all within a day of each other, but no one was sick for more than 36-48 hours.

T. -

My daughter (who turned 2 in February) has had two severe cases of rotavirus which have led her to be hospitalized. It is definately something you should keep a close eye on. Make sure your son is drinking enough (water, popsicles, gatorade.NO MILK) so that he stays hydrated as that is what caused my daughter to be hospitalized. Even if he is drinking, make sure he is still having enough wet diapers during the day and even if he is drinking enough still keep a close eye on him to make sure he doesn't get so sick he gets dehydrated. Any questions..just ask!! :)

It could be Rotavirus; it could be something else. Since you're going to the doctor today, you'll have your answer soon!

My son had Rotavirus when he was 1. He was in the hospital for heart surgery and got it at the hospital while in ICU!!! Rotavirus spreads very very easily - so it is possible he got it from your friend! The symptoms are very much like Rotavirus! I know he probably can't keep anything down, but keep giving him Pedialyte or Gatorade or sucking on popsicles and of course water! It just has to get out of the system but he can easily get dehydrated - so push the liquids even if it does come up right after! Good luck - I hope he feels better soon. I know how hard it is to watch them like that, but it does get better.
