Hi everyone. Just looking for anyone in the area that might have a child/children with Developmental Apraxia of Speech. 2 of my 4 children have this condition and are in speech tharapy. My oldest has made exceptional progress and is just about at normal levels for her age. I just haven't met anyone else who is going through the same things as us. Hoping to connect with some moms! Thanks!

Hi A.,

I'm so happy that your daughter is progressing so well! My eldest son (11) has DAS. He gets frustrated and it is so hard to watch him struggle to get his words out. If you need to talk or chat PM me.

After reading your post, I went to several websites to read the description of DAS. It sounds like something my son has. He did have his speech tested a couple of months ago. They didn't diagnose him with DAS. In fact, they just gave me his levels of delay in relation to other toddlers his age. He's almost 30 months old.
We can't afford therapy and our insurance won't cover it, so I've been trying to help him on my own. I called 'child find' but no one answered. I'm glad you can afford to help your children.

Well my son doesn't have it, but my brother does. I helped raise him from when I was 14 till 21 when I decided to move to Louisiana and start my own life. I spent alot of time learning what apraxia is. I understand completely what you are going through. I had never heard of this until my brother. He is now going on 12 and still has problems tring to say certain words. I think it's just as fraustrating for the child as it is the parents. He/she is trying to communicate with you and it can be very difficult to understand them. I wish you the best of luck with both your children. If you'd like to talk more let me know.

Hi A. I have 3 kids, 1 with dyspraxia and 1 symptoms of verbal apraxia. My oldest with dyspraxia (PDD)was just 'graduated', speech therapy, but still has some issues with motor planning and motor coordination, she doesn't have a PDD dx anymore. My youngest is 2 and hasn't been dx'd yet. His speech therapist(ECI) thinks that its very mild. Since I just moved to the area I like to find a good ST who knows about it. Any good recomendations would be great.
What other interventions beside ST are you using?, you can e mail me at ____@____.com

My son has apraxia and he is doing well. He did not start talking until about three and was not potty trained until about 4. He has been going to public school since he was 4. Now he is 8y/o and doing very well. He reads, writes and does everything else at about his level. Have you also looked into sending her to school, ask about PPCD it's a program that will help them out. When my son was diagnosed in 2001 there was little info and research on this condition. I don't know if there is more today but I found many books about speech delay and other helpful info let me know if you want info. He was also in speech therapy when he was younger but now insurance won't pay because he gets it at school. It is very hard when he get frustrated and doesn't know what to say. He also has a hard time focusing in on his work and understanding the writen directions. The school is very helpful and the teacher are wonderful. Don't worry so much and just remember it is nothing you did or didn't do. I felt so guilty and blamed myself my son's condition and I still feel a little bit like it's my fault. Maybe if I read to him more or talked to him more. I'm a very non emotion person and have a very hard time with my feelings. I also have a problem with physical contact. Let me know if I can be of some help. What speech therapist is he going to? I know many. Good luck and hope I have giving you some useful info.

Hey A.,

This is totally unrelated to your request but I noticed that your youngest 2 are 14 mos appart. I have an 11 mo old and #2 is due in Feb. Both are boys. I was wondering if you have any suggestions on how to handle two this close together? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
J.
