Hi everyone! My beautiful 3 week 2 day old baby girl has developed what I think is baby acne. It has developed in the last 3 days and it's gotten worse. She has tiny red bumps all over her cheeks and I think they are starting to flare up on her forehead also. I have 2 other girls but they never had it. Does anyone know if there's anyway to treat it and how long it lasts? I'm sure it's nothing but I feel bad for her! Thanks...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much to everyone for all the responses. I called my doctor and he said to just keep it clean. To clean it with a wet warm cloth after every feeding. She's bottle fed, and that's what I've been doing. It already looks better this morning! She's going to the doctor next week anyway so if anything, he will see her then as well. Thank you all again so much!

I haven't read to see if anyone else responded with this, but she probably has allergies. That is a big cause of acne. See www.naet.com. Let me know if you want any more information!

Good luck,

I've been told just to wash it with water no soap and other than that leave it alone. I think that stuff bugs us moms more than it does the kids... and if you mess with them they only seem to last longer not to mention it bothers the baby you picking at their face...

Hi A.-
Are you nursing? Has your diet changed? Or has hers? She may be allergic to something in her food, or more likely, to some lotion or other product. Especially in hot weather, babies have problems with their skin. I used the cleanest, clearest soap I could find, protected the baby from too much sun and/or heat, and tried to avoid putting other things on his skin that would make it worse. Give her lots of water to drink in addition to her regular diet. You could try Camo-care products- they usually work great. Call your pdiatrician & ask for advice if you're still worried. Usually, they have a common-sense solution they're willing to share on the phone. Hope it helps, S. :-)

My little boy had it as well. Even though it looks horrible I'm assuming its from breastfeeding. That is what my doctor told me. If your not breastfeeding then I would consider asking your doctor. It clears up on its own, not much you can do fot it. I'm not sure what they call it but I think its from your hormones. I hope this helps a little. Its hard to see our babies with any kind of rash.
Good luck

A.,
It might be primary milia which is a normal for newborns. "Milia are tiny (1–2 mm) pearly white cysts on the surface of the skin that are common in people of all ages, but are more noticeable in infants since they are present on the face. Milia form because the oil gland in the infant is still developing, and the skin does not slough off normally but will instead remain trapped in a pocket in the skin. Milia are classified into 2 types: primary milia, which occur on normal, healthy skin; and secondary milia, which are typically found on skin affected by another skin condition. Milia that are found on the roof of the mouth in infants are called Epstein pearls and are normal in newborns."~~ http://www.visualdxhealth.com/infant/milia.htm

Hope this helps. What does your pediatrician or family practice doctor say about the 'pimples'. They should not be looking red or infected? If so, you should have it checked out to make sure it is not something else, like empetigo.

It is most likely milia and nothing to worry about. Keep giving gentle baby skin care. Watch out for loading your babies face with gobs of sunscreen. Use a big brimmed hat instead and steer-clear of direct sun. My babies had this on their faces and on their gums, too. It looks worrisome but will resolve in time. Eat well, drink plenty of pure water, and keep breastfeeding. I was once told to put a drop of breatmilk on the 'pimple' and let it dry. Not sure it did anything for my babies. The acne just sort of worked its way out.

HUGS!!!

This may sound really wierd, but if you are breastfeeding you might want to try dabbing a little breast milk on it. A lactation consultant told me about it and it seemed to work for my son. I guess it's just another magical benefit to breast milk.

There is nothing that you can do and it will go away on it's own. It is due to your hormones. My 6 week old still has bumps all over her face and the doctor isn't concerned at all.

You might want to check with the pediatrician to see if it's really baby acne. I thought my little girl had acne until I brought her for a check up and the dr. told me it was an allergy and to stop eating milk (I was breastfeeding). Within three days of stopping her skin cleared up. I had no idea because she wasn't spitting up or fussy so I was surprised when he said it was a milk allergy.
If it is acne you just have to ride it out but it should clear relatively quickly as it did with my firstborn.

Hope this helps!

My son is almost 6 weeks old and we have been going through this stage also. The spots freaked me out at first, but they usually only flared up for a day or so each. I made sure to wash his face with a warm wash cloth at least after every feeding and that seemed to help. I think it bothers us moms more than it does the kids.

I had the same proble with 2 of my 3 children when they were a few days old. I was adviced by our pediatrician to only use Dove white bar soap for bathing including head. This worked for us,after a few days skin was clear. I still use only this on my 10 month old.

It is very normal and you should definitely leave it alone. It will go away in a couple weeks. Some babies get the bumps from hormones. Very, very normal so don't worry!

Hi A.,
Sounds like baby acne alright. I don't think there is any treatment for it. My daughter had it and the Dr. said it was from hormones, don't use any oil based products on it. Wash with water and a mild soap. It should clear up on it's own. She could break out again but at 6 months old or earlier it should be gone. If not see a Dr. Good luck. H.

Hi A. -

Acne is a way of the body purifying itself. Gentle blood cleaners, like Alfalfa, work well - as does Red clover. If you are breast-feeding, you can drink the tea and she will get it through your breast milk. If not, you can make a mild infusion (tea) and give her a small amount by dropper or add it to her bottles. Topically, look for a salve with Calendula/Comfrey blend. If you don't know where to get these, drop me a line and I will direct you.

Best of luck,

My book says its normal, just to keep it clean and let it be. I know it looks bothersome, but I don't think they notice it much. My boys had it for a while, but it went away on its own. It could be a heat rash too, it's been so hot!

Baby acne is common but it usually shows up a few weeks after birth. But I am sure there is variety in its timing. Does she rub her face on your clothes looking for milk? Could it be a reaction to laundry detergent residue in your clothes? Lotions, oils, products? I'd eliminate suspect things for a time.

My son had it when he was a few weeks old. He never was bothered by it. It went away after a few weeks and everything was fine. I agree, keep it clean and don't try to irritate it with anything else. If you still feel uncomfortable about it you should call your pediatrician. The pediatrician always reassured me it will go away and it is normal.
