my son 4 weeks old has acne all over his face, chin, forehead, scalp, and is now moving down to his chest and back.. it is white head pimples with red blotches behind them.. I wash his face with his baby soap and the blotches go away for a while after the washing. He has had this for five days now going into his sixth. I would believe it was only baby acne if it wasnt traveling down his body.

What can I do next?

Sounds as if he is allergic to something, i.e. food. A mother I worked for had twins with similar issues. She went to a specialist and had a product created for her. Send me an email letting me know if you are interested and I will get all the details from her.

My second daughter had pretty severe baby acne, all over her face and neck. The baby soap, though mild, may still be irritating it. I'd only use soap if she was 'actually' dirty, otherwise just warm water and a soft washcloth. Also, babies that small don't have to have a bath very often as they're not that dirty. Too much bathing can dry out his skin and make the bumps worse.

There is a hydrocortisone you can use, ask your dr, you can even call in and explain and request a Rx by phone. Save yourself a trip to the drs.

I would recommend seeing an allergist and a pediatric dermatologist.

My younger daughter had really bad baby acne - it's just as you describe, and started when she was around 3 weeks old. Poor little thing looked like she had the skin of a 15 year old boy! I would advise against using soap on your baby's skin. The problem right now is that his skin is just adjusting to the "real world" - not that his skin is dirty. Just use water and a soft washcloth to bathe him. Soap might irritate his skin and make it worse. The acne will pass within a few weeks and his skin will be baby-soft again!

My DD is about to be ten weeks and she had baby acne so bad! I would say that just this weeks her face, head, neck and back have really cleared up. My DS didnt have any so it was shocking to see how bad it got. She has the exact same thing that you are describing, the pimples with the blotches behind them. I googled it and most sites just said to leave it alone and dont wash the face too often. Or put lotion. And to give it time, if it lasts longer than three months then talk to your ped about it.

Hi C. -- after reading what happened, i have some other input i hope will be of help:
1. make sure you do a double rinse of all your lo's laundry.
2. use only 100% cotton stuff the first year at least.
3. use cold water humidifier in winter if you use heat.
4. use only baby detergent on your clothes as well this first year.

Best of luck

My DD had the same thing around that age. The blotches looked like minor bumpy rashes, and they came and went. they were the worse on her neck, then they started going on her face and arms, then down her back, chest, and started on her legs... I thought it was really bad baby acne, but when I asked the pediatrician about it she told me it was just cradle cap. Apparently, it can spread down their body. It was weird because the cradle cap on her head wasn't bad at all. She gave me a cream for it, and suggested to only use soap 1-2 times a week. Just use water if you want to bathe them more often.

It sounds like normal baby bumps. I have seen this often from photographing babies. Also, my daughter had it and it is still on her arms.
