Baby Names- Help I'm Stuck

we have a new baby coming in a few days. We don't know the sex. We have not come up with names!!!!! I'm panicked and totally unable to focus. I'm artsy and like the unusual. My husband is strait out of the Walton's and conventional. Here's where we are with it so far: I won't do top 10 names. I'd prefer not even to do top 100 names. I don't want the name to sound unique per say, but rather just to be rare. I love the name Greyson for a boy, but my husband vetoed it. I like Aleah and Irley for a girl, but think I could still do better. I have vetoed all my husbands names (Clay, Jace, euing ) We sort of both like Wyatt. I love Cohen but a friend just used that name. My daughters name is Lily Jane (and its creeping too close to top 10 for my comfort). I'm open to ideas. Going through baby name books is making my head spin and they all start to sound the same. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

I don't have any names to give you (my boys are either in or creeping toward the top 10) but...I was given this advice that worked well for us once we narrowed it down. When you get some ideas, test the names by calling them out loud (as if you are calling them in from the backyard, or to dinner!) We had twin boys, so it was hard for us to find two names we loved together...and when we called them out, we were really able to 'feel' what it would be like having these people in the house, and using their names!! Good luck with the baby, and keep us posted!!

I think you have some great choices picked out-if you can agree-isn't that always the toughest part?!

I love Greyson for what it's worth-actually they are all really great. We are a big fan of unique names that have important meanings too. Our kids are Bodhi, (after Bodhisattva), and Lennon, (after John, but she's a girl). Enlightenment and Peace.

We struggled with a name for Lennon for awhile since we wanted something as unique and meaningful as Bodhi. The best I can say is think of the things you like-people you like, etc.--the last names as well as the first. Or books you like-and names in the stories or places you've been-or origins you like..like celtic or gaelic, etc. We were listening to a John Lennon song and that's when it hit us.

Not sure I'm helping, but I hope so.

Congratulations!

I think Jocelyn goes really well with Lily. I also loved the name Greyson or Graceyn for our last but DH vetoed it for me as well. I heard a name the other day Brielle and I really like it. We had Bree as one of our top two with our girl... What something that is a derivitve of Kai or Cai... There are many...
I love the name Wyatt but not crazy about it with Lily. I also liked the boys names Case( which was a shortened Casey) or Memphis, Jett, or Zain... but again not sure how well with Lily. Good Luck and Congratulation on the baby, let us know what it is and their name!!

I always liked Grant for a boy. I like Wyatt, too - that's a good pick.

I love the name Amandine for a girl (it's somewhat traditional in France - pronounced Ah-mahn-deen). We named our oldest daughter Corinne (also French), and when we named our youngest Isabelle, it was not a popular name - now there are Isabellas all-freakin'-OVER the place! So I know what you mean! It's a bummer to think you named your child something unusual and then suddenly it's in the top 10. Sigh.

Hi Heidi there are some great baby name ideas here. What I thought when I read your message was that you probably would do better with names that were used during the late 1800's - early 19th century. The reason is that since your husband is conservative it would appeal to him (the history of names in the early U.S. is so interesting) and for you being artsy those names would be unusual but carry a bit of familiarity and culture. Here are some ideas:
Boys - Ansel, Leland, Newland, Noland, Westly, August, Winslow

Girls - Evelyn, Evie, Flora, Grace, Eliza, Aubrey, Lucinda, Aline, Juliett, Madeleine
Note: I do like Greyson. I've met a lot of Wyatt's so not my favorite.
Good luck and congratulations on your upcoming birth!

I tried to read most of your suggestions here but you have received a lot of advice. Many good idea's and names. I was like you in that I like the unique names. I didn't want my child to have two or more other children in class with the same name. My husband on the other hand preferred traditional names that I didn't like at all. Choosing a name is such a difficult task. All I wanted to add is perhaps consider combining two names that have meaning for you. My daughter's middle name is a combination of my husbands middle name (Lee) and my mother's middle name (Ann), making her middle name Leanne. My daughter's first name came to me during my first ultrasound when they said she was a girl. Her name just popped into my head and it took some time to convince my husband. My daughter is Laci Leanne and she has yet to meet any other person with her name or her middle name. You did say you were artsy, but you did not say in what respect. Do you paint, do you write? At my daughter's school there is a little girl with the name Sonnet, I have never heard that as a name before, so perhaps try along the "artsy" line of names you may not have considered.

Other suggestions for a girl would be
Arianna, Adrianna, Julianna, Jillian, Skyla, Tianna (Tea Anna), Collette, Celeste, Cecillia, Alanna, Katrina, Bethany

As many other's have already said I too love Greyson,
what about
Hudson, Garrison, Travis, Trevor, Vance, Spencer, Walker, Parker, Sawyer, Brady

Good Luck

I named my son Grant. Older name that is not unusual per say, but not too common now either. I named my daughter Sierra Eve , which I love, but feel is a little too common now - anyway it fits her because she is a mountain girl. I like the name Jane, Liberty ( aka Libby), June. I think of simple names from the past, beautiful names that are just not too common anymore.......If she's born before the end of the month you could name her July, Juwli, Summer. Would her birthstone still be Ruby - I like that name too. My great grandma was named Cora. I think Cora Jean would be cute. Look into your past for names that were common 50-100 years ago........

Hi Heidi,

I love the name Greyson and the name Irley, my co-worker actually named their son Greyson and their daughter Harper. Both are very cute! I hear you on the unique names, my husband has a very common name (Joe) and seems like there's always a million people around with his name. Anyways, my sister recently had a baby and named her Iris Lydia. I thought that was beautiful as Lydia is a family name. I put a couple of other unique names below (if you can't tell I like the old fashioned names). Hope that helps you out!

Boys: Cairo, Tate, Otto, Oliver, Cole, Archer, Axel

Girls: Kinley, Elise, Kiera, Natalie, Kennedy, Charley

When we were thinking of a baby name for our first, I was reading down a short list, some I liked and he didn't and vice versa, or we'd say "that's ok". When I read a name that we both liked, we both looked at each other and said that's it. If you both like Wyatt, stick with it.

I don't really have a name to suggest, but just an idea. My husband and I were in similar situations.. but he was the more "popular" name type guy and wanted to name our baby Ashton... eeks... hahaha. Anyways, I wanted a traditional name like Joseph or John. So, anyways, our solutions so for have been choosing names that their meanings are traditioanl. Our son is Ian, which is galic (sp) for John. We are about to have our third and also do not know the gender. If it is a boy our name as of right now is Nicholai. My husband will probably call him his full name and I will probably call him Nick! haha.

Good luck and Congratulations!

Have you tried looking at a top 100 list from the past (like 1920's or earlier?) Those names might meet your husband's requirement for "normal" but also be not as frequently used today.

Here are a few that I saw in my kids' school directory:

Boys: Eamon, Spencer, Felix, Bryce, Kaden, Beaux, Hudson, Everett, Quinn, Cambry, Ewan, Kent, Braison, Kieran, Dante, Dawson

Girls: Emery, Helena, Afton, Sutton, Lydia, Tess, Margaux, Annyn, Janine, Bonnie

By the way, I never paid attention before, but in just casually glancing through the school directory I caught sight of at least 7 Grayson's or Greyson's. It's a great name, but may not be as uncommon as you would like.

Good luck,
K.

Hi Heidi,

You are right - Lily is a popular name. So now you want a less popular name.

I also had the same problem w/ my husband - he vetoed all of the names I liked for our second son (we agreed on names for our first and third sons). I also wanted to stay away from the top 10 (at least), but since he vetoed all of my names for our second son, we ended up w/ one of the most popular boy names - Ethan. LOL! Anyway, the name I wanted for Ethan was Preston. I love that name. I also like the name Carson. Our first son's name is Brenden and our third son's name is Landen. Landen is starting to get popular. Brenden isn't as popular (especially the way we spell it). However, I realize that's probably not "artsy" enough for you. Other names I like for boys: Tucker, Emmett and Everett. I think the name Porter is okay (I mention Porter b/c maybe you would like it more than I do, since it's on the more rare side). Also, you might like my friend's boys names: Dane, Cody, and Boone (Boone is extremely rare, so you might want to consider that one).

For girl names, I like Skye (I am not artsy, but I LOVE that name. If I had a girl, I would have named her Skye). I also like Bianca, Tatum, Ashlyn, and Tanvi (Tanvi is an Indian name, BTW, and I love it).

Anyway, hope I have helped you! Let me know what you choose, and best of luck with your delivery!

I have a friend that named her daughters lovely but less common names. They are Aurora Belle-- named after two Disney princesses (Aurora is Sleeping Beauty's name and Belle is from Beauty & The Beast). Astrid Jane loosely translated means beauty & grace.

I haven't read the other posts, but here are my two cents. Compromise is the soul of marriage. If you both like Wyatt, I would say that should definitely be one of your top picks.

I am with you as far as avoiding the Top 10 names. For me personally, I wanted a name that people would know how to spell and pronounce the first time they see or hear it. I didn't want it to be super popular - no offense to those with babies this name, but I literally know more than 20 Isabellas - but I didn't want it to be weird either.

The other thing is that I like for names to be personally significant rather than just being picked out of a book. So scour your personal histories for ideas from locations, close friends, family names that you can use. If you don't like any of the actual names, try to maybe choose ones that have the same first letters? Or the same first letters of your and your husband's names?

BTW, our boy name was Paul. We had a harder time with girl names. These were top contenders: Juliet, Clara, Natalie, Taryn, April, Amelia, Violet, Diana.

We were in the same situation with the birth of our second child. I'd say a name and well-meaning friends would say "oh I didn't like that guy in school", or "I have an old uncle with that name and he's a creep". It helps to have choices so that when you see your child for the first time you'll know if it fits. (and all of these wonderful Mom's have offered great suggestions!) But PLEASE think about your child and avoid quirky names that could be made fun of or have to be s-p-e-l-l-e-d out by the kid every time he gives his or her name. I have 3 children and have heard lots of name variations over the years. Your kids friends, coaches, teachers etc. will all use nicknames, so be aware of derivatives of your chosen names too. Don't forget, we get to choose the names, but they have to live with them! Good luck with your baby and happy name choosing!

It's so hard to find unique names that sound good (and like you didn't make them up).
Here's a few I came up with:

Girls: Greta, Eva, Elle (pronounced Elle or Ellie), Corrine, Cora, Mara, Marin, Jaren, Jadalyn, Jada, Amelia, Catherina, Nahlah, Monique, Malia, Helene, Helen, Therese, Adrienne, Anika, Carly, Jessena, Kjersti (pronounced Cheer-stee), Malene, Amberly, Stella, Vonda, Tia, Marielle, Aurora, I., Jaelle, Daniela, Lucy,

Boys: Griffin, Owen, Camden, (Wyatt is nice), Hudson, Simon, Cale, Cameron, Orion, Henry, Fredrick, Evan, Everett,

Good luck!

Oh I was in the same boat with my second child! We didn't find out the sex and we just couldn't agree on names. I bought an awesome book recommended to me by a friend that helped make my decision. It's called The Secret Meaning of Names by Pierre Le Rouzic. It nailed all of our personalities down based on our names, so when I narrowed down the names, I ended up going with the one that I most like the meaning.

My husband and I picked out a name for each gender so we had a total of 4 full names narrowed down. We also mixed and matched the names. For example If I picked the first name then he picked the middle name and vice versa.

We waited to see the baby first before we officially named what turned out to be a boy. Honestly, I looked at my baby and nothing came to mind. We banked his cord blood and they came to collect it, along with the paperwork and so we had 4 hours to come up with a name after he was born.

I have to say that I love the name Greyson! Too bad your husband isn't in agreement!

I also love the names London, Ireland, India, Lexi, Anya, Enya, Arwyn, Raina and Kamilla for a girl. My hubby vetoed all of them. (London/Lexi and Lily go well together)

For a boy I liked Garrison, Garreth, Elijah and Marcos. Those all got vetoed too.

Good luck to you!!!! Let us know what you go with!

I love Greyson! Also like Wyatt, preston, Parker, Leland, and taio. For girls I like Camille, maren/maryn, Gianna, ruby, Cora, Cordelia or Delia, hauna, Fiona, lucy, lucia, Morgan, rhiannon, and Evelyn. We have one popular name (Olivia) and picked Amelia because it wasn't so popular, but now I've met more than ever! It's like getting a white car then noticing how many other white cars you see ;)

I love the name Raef for a boy. If I have another boy, we'll name him that. My husband likes the name Sinjin for a boy. I'm not too crazy about it, but he went with my name for our first son.

Also like, Aedan, Brodan (nickname, Brody) Tristan, Tate & Blaine for boys.

For girls...the only girl name I like, is Morgan. I hope I only have one girl, or the other just might end up with a boys name! :)

Good luck to you, let us know what you decided!!
