How come a baby sitter makes more than I do as a professional, albeit underemployed due to the economy? Maybe I should take up babysitting instead of teaching and tutoring. Hmmm....

I am in the northern burbs of Dallas. My 18 yr old does not set a rate, however she averages $12-$15 per hour CASH.

The average rate around here is about $10. She started babysitting around age 13 as Mom's helper, etc and has been with a couple of families over 3 yrs.

The children usually look forward to her because she always brings a fun craft, game or something to do. She also helps with homework and tutors them in Spanish, mani/pedis, etc (all with mom's permission)

She usually babysits at least 1 night a weekend if she is not cheering at a game (Varsity captain) and will bring home anywhere from $80-$100.

She is CPR trained.

When we had teen sitters for our daughter for our weekly date nights, we guaranteed $40 CASH even if we had to cancel due to illness, etc because good sitters are hard to find and if she saved that day for us, we at least paid a good portion of what we would have paid for her being at our house. That said, our weekly date nights, and we did not miss many, nor do we... we averaged $60-$80 a date night depending on how late we were out.

Here in Atlanta, the going rate appears to be between $10-12 cash an hour. However, back in Cincinnati, the rates were higher, at $12-15 an hour.

I REFUSE to pay a babysitter more per hour than minimum wage. I think it is truly nuts for a parent to pay a teenager more than a couple of dollars per hour for babysitting.

A child care worker has taken a minimum of 20 hours of training each year plus has CPR and First Aid. They work daily with multiple children. They have years of experience.

They barely make minimum wage and work their hiney off. So NO, I don't pay that and won't. You can find a person that is older that would be grateful for some extra pocket money.

I pay our regular babysitter $20 for part time care for one child. Usually after school for a couple of hours up to 4 or so. If it's more than that I'll pay her $25. That's what his age group would cost in a full time child care setting for the highest level of care.

If she has both kids I pay her $30 for the 3-4 hours.
