Birth Control Pills While Breast Feeding - Virginia Beach,VA

I took the mini pill during all three of my childrens nursing. I started it with my girls (now 6/9)after the 6 week postpartum checkup and with my son at the same time. I did not have any milk issues. The drug in the minipill shouldn't affect your milk like a reg. pill does. I stopped taking it with my son because I actually researched it this time and it sounded more like the morning after than a prevention. It does not stop you from ovulating like a regular pill. It just prevents the implantation of a fertilized egg in your uterus. I personally couldn't handle that thought, so I began using condoms immediatley. I started my cycle at 8 weeks postpartum and still no pregnancies. I do try to avoid intercourse during my fertile time however. I really don't want another baby. Thinking mirena (which is also HIGHLY recommended for bf moms) or getting tied at this point.

I think if you are worried about the risk just use condums until you stop nursing. Personaly I would just be anxious about even if they said it was okay. But I didn't like to even take tylonol while I was pregnat or nursing. You can always call your PCP and ask what they think or ask his pediatrican. My daughters pediatrican would tell me about what I should or shouldn't do when I nursed my girls. Good luck

I went on the regular pill around 11 months, since I had dropped to 4 feedings a day, because we KNEW we didn't want more children and didn't want the rist. I was willing to lose my milk before I ran the risk of getting pregnant. However, that is a tradeoff you have to be willing to make, because my doctor could guarantee it would wouldn't affect me.

That being said, my milk was well established by then, so when I did start them, I had no problems whatsoever. I just weaned this week (he turned 15 months) and have had milk for the 3-4 months that I took the full pill.

personally i would try the mini pill and just avoid sex during ovulation (14days before your period is due).
i had high blood pressure and was taken off birth control, but opted for the mini pill because i needed something and it worked out ok for me, meaning it was pretty effective. but i did also avoid sex during ovulation soooo...

i would highly recommend using only physical barriers while breast feeding.

It should be okay but be prepared for some milk drop off. At 14 months this may be less of an issue for your babe since he is probably not feeding every 2 hours like he might have done as a wee-one. You should still be okay on just the mini pill as efficacy with perfect use is 98% but do as advised by your doc.
