Birthday Gift for a 5 Year Old Girl?

Hello again mommies,

I need some ideas for a birthday gift for a 5 year old girl that we barely know.

I bought a cute looking jewellery box from Amazon (costing about 15 bucks), but it turned out to be very small, about 6 inches wide. It is supposed to have a singing fairy inside and also a mirror. I haven't opened it to check obviously. Is that a good gift?

I am used to big plastic baby and toddler gifts and really don't have any idea what a 5 year old girl might like! :)

Thanks for any suggestion,
D.

So What Happened?

Thank you all! Looks like for big kids, size doesn't matter after all :)..

I think I will just pack the jewellery box nicely and stick a handwritten birthday note on it. Hope she will like it.

Thanks for your wonderful comments. :)

My daughter is 5 and loves dress up, jewelry and makeup/nailpolish.. I think that the jewlery box is great, if you are worried about it go get her a couple of necklaces or bracelets to put in it. She will love it!

My daughter just turned 5 so I have a pretty good idea about what little girls this age like. Here is a list of several things that she and her friends are into.

Barbies
Princess Stuff (Rapunzel, Cinderella, Belle, Ariel, Aurora, etc.)
Fairy Stuff (Tinkerbell, Silvermist, Vidia, etc.)
Zoobles
Squinkies
Princess Sticker Books
Costume Jewelry
Puzzles
Games
Beginning Reader Books
Craft & Art Kits

Since you don't know her that well I think it would be fine if you just give her the jewelry box. If you want to do a little more then you could get some kids costume jewelry and put in it.

I love the jewelry box. You are so sweet.
How about a few inexpensive plastic bangles to put in there for dress up?
Can find them at Wal-mart.
A stuffed animal?
Small, cute pink or purple throw pillow for her bed (all the rage now and
can find them at Target or Wal-Mart.

My daughter is turning 6 and has loved jewelry boxes for a couple years now. Or any kind of fancy box. Heck she even loves fancy shoe boxes. So yes, I think its perfect.

Like someone suggested you could get an inexpensive piece of jewelery to put inside, but if you don't want to spend anymore money, no need! I'm sure she'll love it!

We have "go to" gifts for each age. My son's friends all turned five this year. We got boys and girls alike, Lite Brites. They cost $11 at Toys R Us (I haven't found them anywhere else, except online). Every kid who has received this, loves it! Don't forget the batteries!

Its fine.

My almost 5y also loves Strawberry Shortcake dolls and DVDs; plastic rings, bracelets, headbands...

Anything 'Fancy Nancy' should be good too.

This is a perfect gift! I agree on perhaps adding some pretty, cheap jewelry. Check the clearance rack in Walmart's jewelry department. A few "pearl" necklaces and clip on earrings are a good start.

Oh I think she'll love it. You also can't go wrong with any of the Melissa and Doug paint your own craft kits. They can be found at Michael's for about $10. Jewelry box, photo frame, hand held mirror.

Sounds perfect just as it is.. maybe tuck a little note inside wishing her a "Happy 5th birthday.". Roll it up and tie a tiny ribbon around it.
