Has anyone used the Born Free BPA free plastic bottles? Do you like them and if you switched after using another bottle, how did your baby take to the switch? Have you had any physical problems, like melting, with the bottle if you used the microwave to warm up the formula while in the bottle?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your responses! And thank you for those that attached informative websites, which I have saved to My Favorites. I tried the Born Free and at first he did well, but the time afterwards not so well. So, I decided to stick with Dr. Brown's which he likes and is used to them and I like them too, but I switched to the glass bottles of Dr. Brown's. I feel better about feeding him and i have peace of mind. Thanks again.

This is a big concern. This is why we have always used the Playtex drop-in liners, they are garunteed BPA free. I will attach a few sites about it, but they are safe and I would recommend them. I haven't tried the brand you are asking about, but they sound good. My concern with glass bottles is when they get older and throw the bottles aside when finished, I bet replacing them could get pricey. If you heat the bottle in warm water, you should be fine. However, putting in in the dish washer or any sterilizer system then negates that, and if you don't, they aren't getting cleaned completely. I am also going to attach a site about flouride and what water to use to make the bottles. This is interesting and I used filtered city water last time, but not with the next one!
This is also why I NEVER microwave in plastic and steam my veggies in stainless steal cookware. There is a lot out there you have to watch for!

The Playtex drop-ins are BPA free - BPA is used to make bottles look clear.

Good for you for switching for your baby's sake!

Hi! I use Born Free bottles with my little guy. I started with Avent until I saw the studies and warnings about BPA so I immediately switched. I had no problems with him taking to the nipple (he even sucks on a different paci - a Wubbanub by Soothie) and I've had no problems with them at all. I don't microwave them because they could melt, but I put them in the warmer with no problems. My guy loves playing with them, but he banged two of them on the hard floor and the bottoms split, so you have to be careful. They are too expensive to have to replace on a regular basis.

In my opinion, they do the job BPA-free, so I'm happy with them!

Hi,

From what I have read, BPA's are only an issue if you heat the plastic up to a certain tempature (I believe over 125 degrees). For instance, if you use the tupperware your food is stored in to heat it up in the microwave, the BPAs can leach into your food. You can solve this problem by not heating the fomula this way, but by putting the bottle into a bowl of warm water. The plus side to this (besides the risk of BPAs) is you will not burn your baby. It is recommened by doctors, books, etc. not to heat formula or breastmilk in the microwave because of the danger of "hot spots." High heat also can disrupts the properties in the formula/breastmilk (so do not heat on stove either).

If you want to go completely safe but without a major switch, Dr. Brown's has a glass bottle:

This story was just put out by ABC:
http://www.abcnews.go.com/WN/story?id=4259036&page=1
It talks about keeping the bottles BPA free. The following flyer was included on how to pick a bottle:
http://www.ewg.org/files/EWG_babyguide.pdf
It says to stay away from the liners also. I have been using the Playtex liners and will be switching to something else for my son as soon as I can.

There is also a website a friend shared with me to buy safe items. They have glass bottles with silicone sleeves which I would prefer to avoid breakage. That site is:

Good luck in your shopping!
