I am having second child soon and am looking for ideas on what gear you bought or skipped. I have a Medela pump (about 3 years old) from my first and all the bottles and attachments, but I assume I need to get new ones now? Thanks!

I am pretty sure that Medela has always been BPA free. I used my pump last year that I bought in 2006. You can call Medela and ask but I am pretty sure that the lactation folks up my way said it was fine. Born free is another good band if you are still uncomfortable using your old equipment.

If your baby is now a preschooler, I would assume that most of your plastic needs replacing to make sure it is safe. With my first child, I bought all expensive Advent bottles and he wouldn't touch them (preferred cheap playtex), so I always advise to buy only one or two of few different kinds of bottles and nipples and then only stock up on what your baby likes later. And both my breastfed babies liked different nipples. Go figure.

I bought new bottles for my Medela anyway, because the old ones were pretty worn. Make sure you disinfect (boil) all the attachments and tubes as well because bacteria can linger, even when out of use for a while.

Otherwise, all I can advise is go easy on yourself and what you can do. Two is harder than one and it's not as easy to get the sleep you need when you have an active child at home. Also, if you are breastfeeding, your toddler can be a huge distraction. I was very anti-TV with my first, but didn't hesitate throwing on a cartoon to help get me some quiet time to nurse baby #2.

Good luck to you and congratulations on your growing family!

I am having my second in December. I tossed all my Madela collection bottles assuming they were not BPA free. Then I went to the Madela website where they said their bottles have always been BPA free. Luckily, I was able to retrieve my stuff before the garbage/recycling was picked up!

I would suggest checking into your brands etc. before assuming things aren't safe.

Good luck!

Hi there,
I could be wrong, but I believe all Medela products are BPA free, even those made a few years ago. I got a pump two years ago and made sure it was BPA free and the brand was Medela as well.

We are due in a few weeks for number 2. My oldest is 3 so we have the same thing. I found glass bottles at walmart and that is what we are going to use when i am not nursing. When she starts the tossing stage we will go to sippy cups that are safe for her.

Hello!

The Born Free bottles and sippy cups are expensive but they are wonderful and my daughter loves them. You can buy them at Babies R Us or on Amazon.com.

Congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck with everything! :)

Hi J.,
All Medela bottles/attachments are BPA free (actually they ALWAYS have been!!) so the good news is that you should be all set for your little one's arrival. I was worried about the same thing when I was pregnant the 2nd time around but called the company and got very good news. Congrats!
