Breastfed Baby Refuses Bottle

I have been exclusively breastfeeding my daughter, but I plan on slowly weaning her to a bottle soon (formula and breastmilk.) My goal is to have her completely stop breastfeeding by the age of 6 months. The problem is, she refuses to drink from a bottle. I have tried different nipples and bottles, but nothing works. Has anyone gone through this or have any suggestions on how I can get her to take from the bottle?

What can I do next?

I would suggest having someone else try to give her the bottle. I breastfed my son for 6 months. I went back to work when he was 3 months so I had to give him pumped milk. Before I went back to work I would pump milk and either let his dad or my mother feed him just to get him use to the bottle. In the beginning he would not take a bottle for me but after letting others offer him a bottle I didn't have anymore troulbe w/ getting him to take it from me. Now the formula was another issue. Around 6 mos my supply started to decrease and when I offered him formula he wanted nothing to do with it. I had to mix the formula w/ breastmilk for him to take it. Finallly after a couple of weeks and slowly increasing the proportion of formula to breastmilk he took it without a problem. Hope this helps!

Nuby makes a great sippy cup with a silicone spout. My son was drinking from these at 4 months for the same reasons (choking with a bottle) and still uses them to this day (14 months). They have been a lifesaver for so many moms that I know. They are sold at CVS, Babies R Us, Kmart etc. It is great too because they have to suck like the breast rather than it just coming out! Good luck!!

I have a 5 month old and the same problem. She is getting a tad bit better at it, but has problems sucking on the nipple and chokes alot. The only advice I can give is keep on trying and have someone else offer the bottle. Sooner or later she will have to accept it or she will go hungry. My daughter learns this lesson when I am away. Maybe you should transition to a cup. That is my next step. There are babies that never had a bottle. I hope you find a solution.
