Breastfeeding Using a Sling with Large Breasts

Hi Ladies!
I'm interested in hearing from moms (especially large-breasted women) who have used slings and used them for breastfeeding. I'm expecting my second child and am very interested in utilizing a sling as much as possible when the baby arrives. I didn't use a sling very much with my first mostly because I am large breasted and couldn't figure out how to make it work. I lost track how big they got while I was pregnant when I went past the E size! 4 months after my first was born, I was more "normal" and back to a 36DD (preprego I was a D). Thanks in advance for the advice!

I'm similar sized and have had great luck breastfeeding while babywearing! I had a lot more success with a moby and ring sling than I did with my ergo. There's a number of AP groups in the area that might be able to help you get it sorted out and recommend carriers/positions that would work well for you. Just do a search on meetup.com for AP groups. I organize one on the eastside (which you're welcome to join), but I know there's at least 2 others in the area.

I vary in size, but the last time around I was and H, ( yes an H) right after baby was born. Usually with in 3 months of the birth I am a D or Double D.

I have used a sling for all 3 born children and intend to do the same for the one we are expecting now. I don't know how to tell you to make it work exactly for you since I cannot see how you are wearing your baby and how you are postioning and so on. I will tell you things that worked for me and maybe that will help.

1. I did not use commercial slings, they just did not fit well and were mostly impossible to nurse in ( for me) I sewed or had some one sew (depending on which sling we are talking about I have them in several colors) the sling from Elizabeth Lee design. They fit so well and are very comfortable. I had them all made with an extra 6" on the tail as well, this made for extra covering in some cases and made them easier for me to adjust.

One of the issues with commerical slings is that most of them have all the fabric in the tail ( the part you pull to adjust) sewn all together so that you have to adjust the the top of the sling ( the part baby's head can stick out of) and the bottom ( the part that holds and tucks under baby's little bottom) at the same time and both have to be the same. With the Elizabeth Lee design slings you can adjust one part much tighter than the other if you want, I found this to be invaluable, both in adjusting for comfortable nursing as well and to make baby safe and comfortable.

I also recommend that the sling not be made out of too stiff a material as that seems to make it harder to nurse comforably with it too. Try differing positions until it is working for you, I never even thought of breast size being an issue with nursing in the sling, but I had the home made very easy to adjust slings. I also would get good @ nursing that baby before you tried to put them in the sling.

Hope some of this helps!

I was an H cup after my daughter was born and found a great position for nursing my daughter in the Moby Wrap. If you live locally, I would love to show you how to do it. It made a huge difference during those marathon feeding sessions. I was able to cook, clean, go to the bathroom, etc, etc. I loved being free to move around while my baby nursed and napped for a few hours.

I will second the Moby. It's wonderful for everything and women (and breasts) of all sizes. :)

Hi R.,
I,too, was a D before I started, but am "blessed" with being an H cup for both pregnancies, it looks like (I'm currently a G-cup again and pregnant with twins). With my first, I used the playtex hip hugger sling and was able to breastfeed my son in it no problems. I have a sling, too, for this time around and I'm thinking it shouldn't be a problem to breastfeed in either. A friend made me a ring sling and I intend to try out the Moby Wrap as well, as you can carry two in it... Good luck with yours, but if it doesn't work, try the playtex hip hugger...

I'm normally a C cup, but was a DD when pregnant/breastfeeding. I just used a nursing bra - the kind with the flaps. Nursed babies everywhere from grocery store to church!

If you find out, lemme know - cuz everytime I tried to breastfeed in my sling or in my moby wrap, my boob would squish against my daughter's face and smother her :( I was 38DD pre-prego and 44DDD (UGH!) after my milk came in.

as a simaliry chest area blessed women, I used a ring sling with both of my children and it worked great. You just have to play with it to get a comfortable fit and make the right adjustments. What I liked about the ring sling is that the extra fabric that hung off the 'tail' was very useful as a modesty cover for when I was nursing and walking around a store. I could just use the extra fabric and tuck it around and then have hands free nursing! It was wonderful. There are a lot of websites out there that have instructions on how to use all different kinds of slings. Pick one that will work the best for you and then search for that type of sling instructions.

Good Luck!

I was a 38I while breastfeeding my little guy. I used a ring sling (maya wrap). It worked pretty well since I could raise or lower him in it. I did not get a moby until later and wish I had it when he was younger. Good luck

i started at a DDD and went up from there while pregnant (also lost track). i wore several slings. carriers with ease, though i didn't bf with baby in the carrier. i liked the kangaroo korner sling, as it is adjustable and comes in several different fabrics (fleece, cotton, uv mesh, etc). i also use the mody, that while a little complicated at first, is nice b/c it centers the baby on your body allowing you to carry them longer and more comfortably, and is versatile in terms of baby position. i did try to bf using the moby and it didn't work, though maybe i just needed the aide of someone who had before. i also use the ergo, which is the most expensive of the 3, but maybe easiest for bfing. i have seen a baby being bf in an ergo, though didn't try it myself. good luck!

I was an F while pregnant, so I feel your pain. I loved my Ergo and so did my daughter. I only wish I had purchased it sooner!
