I have trouble burping my 3 week old. Does anyone have any advice??
if the baby is not uncomfortable, then don't bother, both of my girls stopped burping at about 2 weeks old, they just nursed with a great suction so no extra air was swallowed
If the baby IS uncomfortable, then lay the baby across your lap on it's tummy and patting the back for a bit. If that still doesn't work, sit the baby up while supporting the head
Just another option...I had a nurse tell me that there's no reason to pat your baby's back (or pound on it, like I've seen some people do!); you just need to rub it. I started trying it with my then-infant son and it worked every time. I can't explain how or why, just that he would always burp when I held him and rubbed his back, vs. sometimes getting a burp when I was patting his back. And I got to do what I wanted to do in the process - cuddle with my little guy! Good luck!
You are going to get a lot of responses here. Everyone has advice on burping babies. Babies need to burp! Otherwise they will get gas and be in pain. A trick my mom told me was to sit them on one of your legs facing the other leg having them bending slightly...supporting their head and neck under their chin with your hand and raising one of their arms a little and then pat on back. Just keep trying all different ways...over the shoulder etc. He or she will eventually burp..you just have to be a little patient. Try burping in the middle of a feeding too and at the end. I think they usually say to try after every ounce of milk if you can. If he/she does get gas...try infant massage....they have videos and dvds out there that show you how....good luck and congratulations!!!!!
After I was done nursing I would hold my boy in my lap and tip his head down a little toward ground then lift him up to my shoulder and would almost always get a good burp. I think it moved the air bubble around in his belly and helped it come out. I hope that makes sense..I also would sit him on my lap and rub his back. sitting seemed to help too.
I never burped my babies. At first I thought I had to, but they just never burped.
It didn't cause any problem for them.
If your baby doesn't have to burp, don't worry about it.
I thought the newest research was that all you had to do was either lean him to his left or right and ever so gently tap him on either side and the burp will come right up. Edwards Hospital has a Cradle Club that is extremely helpful for new moms and I might be wrong, but I want to say lean him on his left and the burp will travel right up.
I had one baby that wouldn't burb if I tried to "make" him (patting him on the back) but would do better if I just paused and waited for him to do it on his own. I had one that I would have to hold on my leg like 2Boysunder10 describes and just pat him until he gave it up....over course I did that because he would spit up with the bubble too. I had one that would do better if I rubbed their back rather than pat. My suggestion is to just try several different positions and see what the baby likes the best and works the best for you two too! Each baby is different and may or may not need to burp as often as others. Good luck to you.

My 3 babies hardly ever burped. I soon gave up trying and they were never gassy or fussy. 2 were formula feed and 1 was breast feed only.
