Chapped Lips - Chicago,IL

Anyone have any advice for chapped lips? I seem to have them constantly! If you looked at them, you'd never know as they are not red or flaky, but I feel like I am always having to put some sort of lip balm on them (I use the Burt's Bees balm). Any suggestions?

Just to add - I drink 64-96 ounces of water daily, so I don't think it is a hydration issue.

What can I do next?

Aquaphor is great for chapped skin anywhere on the body, I use it on my lips and my son's in the winter and it really helps.

Same as you. Burt's Bees doesn't do it for me. The only thing that works for me is the Chapstick Moisturizer formula (it's the one with the blue label) during the day. Plain old Vaseline right after bathing and at bedtime works too, but I don't like how it feels. I have to check and make sure I'm hydrating and actually eating some healthy fats (like almonds/walnuts/fish/etc.) too.

(After reading some of the other moms responses, I second using Aquaphor too!)

Hi MR,

Chapped lips generally is a sign of dehydration. Are you drinking enough water? Too much soda or tea? Sometimes it is a sign of illness, but mostly it's because there is not enough fluid in your system.

Do you drink a lot of water? Chapped lips will be worse if you are dehydrated. Dehydration can also cause chapped lips.

Try the stuff you put on cracked nipples for when breastfeeding (lansinoh?) That stuff is awesome on the lips =) If all else fails, I usually use some plain old Vaseline or auqaphor on thick at night. The only Burt's Bees chapstick that works for me is the menthol one, the honey one doesn't do a thing-so maybe try a different one or try Carmex.

Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour Creme. It's been the same formula for over 50 years because it works like a charm! It smells a bit medicinal, but I swear by it. They sell it at Ulta in addition to dept. stores & runs about $18 for a tube that will last you at least a year.

A couple of things, because I have chronic chapped lips too:

-You may be making it worse by using a product if you're reacting to something in the product. I use plain organic coconut oil and it has been the best thing. You can use it on your whole body, hair, etc and it's a great moisturizer, no chemicals, and naturally anti-bacterial.

-A holistic dentist told me that the reason why I probably have such issues with chapped lips is because I am reacting to the metals in my mouth (fillings) and they just ran bloodwork to see if that is the case. If you're interested, the test was covered by health insurance and is called the Clifford test.

I have had chapped lips all my life. I used to use Carmex but that never helped - I think it made it worse! I swear by Chapstick - any of their flavours but I like the mint and cherry best.

Make sure you are drinking enough (and maybe extra until your lips are better) water.

Burt's Bees has never done anything for chapped lips for me. To me, it's more like a lipgloss / lipstick than chapstick.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. What a pain when you want to wear lipstick, right? While I occassionally get chapped lips during the winter, it really does matter what you drink and what products you use. Coffee is a dehydrater and vaseline doesn't moisturize and get down into the skin. Just sits on top to create a barrier and that isn't what you want. I use an awesome lip balm that feels tingly when I put it on as it has vitamins and botanicals to help heal and soothe! There is also a vitamin supplement made just for lips too! May be something to think about. The products are 100% guaranteed so you don't have to feel like you've waisted your money if they don't work, just return them!

I'd be happy to assist you in any way. Take care of yourself and keep up the good work of hydrating!!

The nipple crack cream they have in stores..pretty much like vaseline but cheaper than other things and works miracles. I always carry mine around on me at work especially in the cold months. And no one will ask to use yours after you tell them what it is...lol. Should be in the baby section of any store.

How often do you lick your lips during the day? That is a habit that can contribute to dry lips. Sounds counter to logic, but it is true.
I use the blue Chapstick, too.. but I only use it a couple times a day. Sometimes, when my lips are dry but I KNOW I am hydrated, I will rub regular hand lotion on my hands and smear a bit on my lips as well.
How dry is the air in your house? Maybe you could run a humidifier a little as well?
