I have a 10 yr old daughter who has had the chicken pox vaccine. When she was 7 and in the first grade the school had a break out of chicken pox and she caught it. Now, the doctor is telling me she needs a second chicken pox vaccine. I really don't think this is necessary. I wanted to see what other moms thought. If I choose not to allow the second vaccine what can I do? I've never denied vaccines but this is really outrageous to me. I don't want problems witht the school or doctors office so how do I go about all this?
Thanks in advance for all the help!

What can I do next?

She caught the virus - therefore she's had it and should be immune, I wouldn't have her get it either. I know the vaccination booster is supposed to be required for all school children this fall but seems unnecessary for her. I was bothered by this, so I actually went to the Texas Immunization Branch under the Department of State Health Services and it falls under the FAQ's. The link is at the end of the question.
20. If a child has had chickenpox illness is he/she required to get the vaccine?

No. If a child has had chickenpox at any age, he is not required to get the vaccine. Documenting history of chickenpox illness must include a written statement from a physician, school nurse or the child's parent/guardian containing wording such as: "This is to verify that (name of child) had varicella disease (chickenpox) on or about (month/day/year) and does not need the varicella vaccine."

You shouldn't have a problem with school. My son had the chicken pox when he was 7 months old and never had the vaccine at all. He has that documented on his shot record, and we've never had a problem with the school system (Mansfield ISD). He's 11 now. I would have refused the booster in your situation also, and like you have never refused a vaccine before either. That is ridiculous.

All docs are reccomending a booster of the vericella (sp?) vaccine. My daughter got her booster when she was in either kindergarten or 1st grade.

Get the waiver and don't give her another; that is just flat out ridiculous. Your other post addressed the issue better than I; I just wanted to second the thought for doing so. Kudos to you for doing the right thing in this case and protecting your child from such!
