Child with Dyslexia

I'm wondering if any can refer me to a place to get my son tested for Dyslexia and for tutors or schools who specialize in Dyslexia. After watching my 9 year old struggle for the past two years with reading, writing and spelling and much research on my part, I'm convinced he is Dyslexic. I have found some great on-line resources but need some San Diego resources. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Dr. Dana Dean Optometry is great with this. My children did not go there for dyslexia, but I have met parents of children who have. Once they received vision therapy, their reading improved dramatically. Her website is: http://www.4eyesight.com/. My insurance covered her services at 70%.

Also, here is a book reference that my friend recommended: Overcoming Dyslexia: A New and Complete Science-Based Program for Reading Problems at Any Level by Sally Shaywitz MD
Dr. Shaywitz provides an excellent overview on reading, the brain, and clues to dyslexia. She states that one out of every five children in America has dyslexia and provides insight as how to diagnose "at risk" children. She believes that all children can be taught how to read. She provides a list of books that play with the sounds of language and provides strategies the parent can implement to help their child become a more proficient reader.

Best of luck to you!

HI!!
If you are in the public school system YOU can request your child be tested. IF not you need to consult your pediatrician as to where he or she can take the test.
ALL the best

Hi EW,
Here is a website for a wonderful program in San Diego (Encinitas)that can help your son. My friend took her son and cannot say enough good things about it. She says her son is much happier in school and at home since he started this program. The website is http://www.brainhighways.com/

Love,

Hello,
My nine year old son has "specific learing disability" identified through the school district testing, which allows us to utilize services through public school, altough we chose to privately place him. Anyway, you need to write a letter asking the school to have him "fully evaluated for learing disability", do this ASAP as they have 15 days to respond to you, then 60 days to complete the testing within the current academic school year. That is were you need to start. It is the districts responsibility to first test your child to identify any needs or other testing recommended, then to provide him with the opportunity for a "free and appropriate public education (FAPE)". There are advocacy groups available if you begin to struggle with the bureacracy. They actually do not use the term "Dyslexia", but more specifically differentiate areas of LD and come up with an Indivdual Education Plan (IEP) to help your son succeed in learning. Feel free to write back...we've been doing this for nearly 3 years! Best of luck. ~L.

The school should provide testing for this. Go to the principal first. If he or she is not cooperative, go to the district offices. Work your way through the members of the school board , if necessary, all the way up to the superintendent of schools. Don't be afraid. Help is available, but you may have to fight for it.
