I have done the same thing with my baby, though you may also wantto put her knees to her chest while massaging as this helps the gas move through as well! Good Luck!

My youngest had colic, and we found out it was because of gas. Tell her to talk to her pediatrician. Massage did not work for us. The pediatrician can try different things to find the root of the problem. Sometimes it is not due to gas, but to overstimulation and other problems.

my daughter was a colicy baby and I was told to go buy the dr. browns bottles that you can find at walmart... I used them and they worked wonders... I live by those bottles... Im expecting another baby in 4 days and Im going to use those bottles with or without colic.... they are wonderful... they also have them in different brands I think... but they are truley WONDERFUL bottles... You could probably even search the web and get reviews on them before you go buy them... they arent too expensive either, but they are definately worth the money you spend on them... I think that you can get a set of 4 of them for about $15-$20 bucks... get the starter kit cause you will need the cleaning tools in the starter kit to clean the bottles, you cant buy them seperate I dont think... Good luck!

HI S.:

When your baby has colic, they suffer from severe stomach cramps.

I've had first hand experince with a baby suffering from colic. When my daughter was about three or four months old, she started crying for no apparent reason at the same time everyday. She would cry from about 6pm to 7pm, one hour straight. I was at my wits end and my mom stepped in. She first found a comfortable position for my daugther to lay in (which was on her tummy on a soft pillow). We then added a warm hot water bottle to ease the cramping. This lasted for one month straight, never failed everyday at 6pm.

What your sister really needs is alot of support when the baby starts to cry because she will definately need the support with a crying baby. This will also test her patience. The best advice that I can give is when you can't stand the crying anymore, get a family member to step in a give you some relief.

It doesn't last forever, hang in there and I hope my advice helps.

Aloha, R.

My 7 year old was very colicy the 1st 4 months. It helped him feel better to lay him on his back & slowly pump his legs. Helps w/ the gassyness(sp) I guess. He also liked stroller rides. Good luck to your sis!

Hi S.,

Some questions? How old is the baby? is the baby BF or formula fed? If formula feeding, how much , how often and what type of formula? If Bf , How often, how long and does she take one side or both? If she is bf, does the baby burp like a sailor? or does the baby choke or gag while nursing? Does the baby cry the same time of day or thruout the day? Does she cry for hours or just throut the day? At what age did this start? How long has it been going on? Does the child spit up or exercist baby (vomit shooting half way across the room)?

These are important questions to rule out any other possibilities. I also agree w/ message and swaddeling. Also being in constant movement, swing, car or just being rocked. If you would like to email me more details I may be able to offer some advice.

Hi S.. My son had colic when he was just 2 months old and it scared me to death. I didn't realize it was colic and took him to the ER. They didn't even suggest colic. My husband did some research and found out that with all his symptoms it was colic. Except he wasn't just a few days a week. He was 7 days a week from 6 pm til 10 pm. Long story short. We gave him milicon several times a day (usually after he ate) and the vacuum cleaner was our saving grace. The loud sound of the vacuum overrode him and he passed out in his swing every night. It was a God send!! Over time he cried less and less from 7 - 10 pm then 8 - 10 and so on until it was gone! Good luck and tell your sister to just be patient...it does go away eventually and he's now a fantastic sleeper and eater!!

My best friend had a little boy with colic. She took him to the chiropractor with her. She let our chiropractor give her son an adjustment. After I think it was 2 or 3 adjustments, she never had a problem with colic again. It's just a suggestion. It worked for one child, why can't it work for another.

My son had colic for the first 3 months of his life. I tried everything. I even decided to stay home and not go back to work, so I could nurse him. They say formula makes them more gassy. He would wake up every hour screaming from horrible gas. I tried everything from special formulas, to gripe water (homeopathic remedy), to cutting everything out of my diet that could be causing it. Nothing worked. He finally just grew out of it. So I wish your sister luck. It will get better.

Hi S.,

Our colicky baby girl responded to Mylicon VERY well. She was partly breastfed, partly formulafed. I noticed the colic started and that she wasn't having bowel movements after we started her on formula. The gas was very painful for her. So we tried the Mylicon and it helped tremendously.

However, what really made a difference was switching to Nutrimagen baby formula. We tried Good Start and Gentlease, and both helped her, but the Nutrimagen made a world of difference! After our experience, I've wondered if colic is more a sympton of milk sensitivity or milk alergies.

Best of luck to your sister!

Jenn

Hi S.!
my babe has acid reflux+suffered from colic at around 3 months.
first of all your sister should take her baby to her ped. colic is often confused with acid reflux, so they should look into it and see if it's not that
if she does have a colic i am sure the doctor will have pleanty of advice for her. but here's what helped us:
burping often, like after every couple of ounces (after about 7 mins if she is breastfeeding), if bottle feeding-choosing a slow flow nipple. the big help for us was a vacuum cleaner :) he fell asleep to it. she can record a sound and play it for her daughter.
there are a lot of holding positions for the colicy baby, i think every baby book has them, so she could also look into that.
i hope it will help!

I agree with the chiropractor suggestion. I wish I had done it when I had a colicky baby...but we are going now. My two-year-old was extremely colicky and now that we are seeing a chiropractor, I realize that he probably had a subluxation that we did not know about. It can be expensive, but totally worth it.

One thing that really worked for me was a CD that I recieved as a gift. It replays white noise so it sounds like a vacuum/airplane/fan but when my son was having a crying fit I would turn it on and it was like someone hit the snooze button. He is 6 months and I still play it at night to signal bedtime and it still works to calm him. You can order the cd off www.hush-baby.com

I hope this helps. Colic is no fun and just be there for her, the best thing for me was to get away from the house at least once a day.

Hi S.,

I didn't have a colic baby, but my sister did too, and she was going crazy trying everything. The thing she found out that worked the best was a little bit of baking soda on the nipple of the bottle. She would do this with the late afternoon feeding when it was at its worst. It helped, she was finally able to have a little peace. She learned this from another mother, hope it helps.

My 2 month pld baby girl was collicy for awhile and we tried wrapping her up really tight in a blanket and putting her face down over our lap and patting her back, which seemed to help. Also try Mylicone drops for gas...it works wonders.

We also found that the formula Enfimil with Iron was making her gassy and thought that she may have a milk allergy so we switched to Soy formula and she has stopped being fussy and sleeps almost all through the night now.

Both my 3 year old and now my new 3 week old have had colic signs. Colic is defined as crying for periods of 3 hours for more than 3 nights a week and it usually starts around 6 weeks. However little ones show signs much earlyer than 6 weeks. It is common for siblings to share the problem. Mylecon drops are great for trapped gas, but have not helped us at all with the real colic. My three year old used to cry from 11:00-2:00 every night. I breastfed both babies and my pediatrician had me cut out dairy completely from my diet for one week and then I can add soy to my diet. The difference has been amazing. Other than that the only thing to do is wait it out. I really recommend tag teaming with a spouse or family member if at all possible. Take shift for a few hours at a time. It can be so frustrating to not have a way to sooth a little one. It really does get better. Doctors are still not sure what causes colic the two main suspects are an an intestinal track that is not quite mature (so cutting out dairy can help) or the babies nervous system is developing ( so if the baby becomes overstimulated during the day, crying sessions at night get worse.

This suggestion I got from one of my patients and it really seemed to help with my son.

Chamomile tea in a dropper or soak a bit of cloth with the tea and let them suck on it. Seems to soothe their tummy and help them sleep better. A nice cup for mom wouldn't hurt either.

My oldest had it on and off. What I'm about to tell you might sound bad,but trust me it works. Onion tea, get a whole onion cut it and use 1/4th of it. Boil it in water, strain it and put it in their bottle. just make sure it is the temp that they are use to. Or you can try pepperment tea. I use Celestrial Seasonings, 100% natural herbs, and caffeine free. Try that and let me know if it worked.

my son was colic when he was younger. MY doctor suggested that we put him on enfamil gentlease formula. The proteins are already broken down in this formula so baby doesnt have to work as hard to digest it. It makes them less gassy. My son went from waking up every 2 hours to sleeping 4 hour stretches at times! it really worked for him.

We adopted our son at 2 days old and he had colic right off the bat. We tried several formulas and finally went with Nestle Carnation Good Start. It has 100% Whey protein which is easier to digest. Also, gripe water worked well too. Another thing that was a tremendous help was buying the DVD "The Happiest Baby on the Block." It shows you different methods to calm a crying baby. I swear by this video. We would swaddle our son in a blanket, turn him on his side, and gently bounce him up and down. It is amazing. Here is the link: http://www.thehappiestbaby.com/ Good luck!
