Convertible Crib Question

Hi Moms,

I have two convertible cribs for my two youngest kids, age 4 and 2. The 4-year old has already converted to the full-size bed and the 2-year old is getting ready to convert to the toddler bed. Our intent when we bought the beds was that each kid would use them indefinitely - either give them up when they go to college or take the beds with them when they move out.

Given that intended scenario, I'm now at a loss on what to do with the side rails and supports that originally went with the crib and toddler bed. It's impossible to predict whether these beds will still be considered "safe" in their crib state in 20+ years, and if they are, whether my kids will even want to use them.

I'm looking for some feedback and suggestions on what to do with the extra parts. What would you suggest? What about any crafty ideas on what to do with the wooden rails (these are both very nice, expensive beds). Thanks for any input!

What can I do next?

My mom always said keeping it around was the best form of birth control... :o) So... I kept mine around even after my hysterectomy. Just because. For sentimental reasons, and all of the reasons listed above. You have received some great answers. I hope they help.

If you want something crafty and opt not to keep the cribs... It may be cute to attach ribbons at different points on the rails with different shaped frames and wooden cut letters (for their names) and add pictures. I would do black and whites, with colored ribbons, but that is my own personal taste. You could even do large frames and distress the wood. It would look really pretty.

I agree. Keep them. Life just changed unexpectedly for us and we are now having to get rid of the beds. I'm glad I kept the rails and the instructions (and all the screws/bolts).

I would keep them. I hope that they are able to use those beds indefinitely, but it might not be realistic. Keep the rails on hand so that in the future you can use the cribs again. I think it's a fairly safe bet that they will still be usable, even if your kids don't want to use the cribs you can keep them at your house for their kids. It seems like a long time to keep them around, but if you plan on being in your house, you might as well.

Also, check to see if the cribs fall under any recalls. Seems like every crib around these days has a recall and needs adapter parts to convert it to non-drop side. That would certainly affect weather it can be used down the road as a crib again.

Hi,

Just my opinion, but with the regulations changing on childrens products so rapidly that I doubt they will be the same in 20+ years, besides, your kids will probably want to buy a new crib for their new baby.

I would put those parts away at least for a few years, never know what might happen a few years down the road...your child could want an different bed and a friend could have a baby and need a crib.

I think if you used the crib from birth to your kids adulthood, then you have gotten your moneys worth, no matter what they cost you originally. I truly feel that the convertible cribs are the best bargain in cribs.

I am with you, I have no idea what to do with them. I just keep them under my kids beds on the floor and keep the instructions there as well. I figure if nothing else I have the whole ensemble. I cannot think of anything else I would do with them.

I agree with the other answers - if they are high quality then either them or you could use them again when they have children. Mine only converts to toddler, not to a regular bed, and I might have done it differently if I had found one that did that and I liked it. Many times kids fall in loe with their furniture for sentimental reasons and they want to keep it forever, so just keep it around, with the instructions!!

We have them stored in our crawl space with all the parts and directions tied on in a plastic bag. Not very exciting. Maybe someday we'll sell it, but I don't think anytime soon. We are using the double bed part of it now for my daughter. If you don't want to lose the chance of selling them because they are under recall, you can always sell now and put that money into a nice bed that will last.
