Hi,
I gave birth to my daughter in November, since then I have had extremely dry skin. I have since developed a layer of dry skin on my scalp very much like cradle cap. Does anyone have any ideas or experience in dealing with this. It is driving me crazy!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone, I am gonna try the head and shoulders first..and see if that helps. I have spoken to my doctor.. who did not think much of it. I will speak to him again if the head and shoulders and tea tree shampoo does not work..

I developed Psoriasis on my scalp and eczema on other parts of my body post-pregnancy (no family history to speak of as often times these are hereditary conditions). I tend to think it was/is related to higher stress levels and long-term sleep deprivation. I tried more homeopathic methods first - Fish Oil, Boraj, Flax Seed, Neem Shampoo...but it got pretty bad on my scalp. Now I am using a prescription on my scalp nightly and so far it has worked. You may want to see a dermatologist. Good luck!

Definitely talk to your doctor for a clear diagnosis.

It may actually be psoriasis!

A family member had what you're describing, used Nizoral, took medication assuming it was a fungus, and after weeks ... a dermatologist finally CORRECTLY diagnosed it as psoriasis which has nothing to do with fungus.

Good luck

Thought I had psoriosis, but after trying meds for that it didn't go away. Tried Nizorol and it cleared up (Nizorol treats yeast rather than fungus). Used it twice a week.

Years ago after my second son was born, I developed a thyroid condition. Symptoms included dry scalp, dry skin (all over), exhaustion (thought it was because of lack of sleep), depression (cried all the time--again thought related to baby), couldn't lose the baby weight (ate right, breast fed, worked out--no weight loss), no energy. Read about thyroid problems in magazine (while on treadmill) and had myself tested. Turned out I'd developed antibodies against my thyroid. So if you have any of these other symptoms, get your thyroid checked.

In Good Housekeeping magazine they once had a tip that to clear dandruff naturally you needed to use a solution made primarily with Apple Cider Vinegar. I think it was two parts Apple Cider Vinegar to one part Water. You would treat your scalp with the solution in the shower, leave on for two to five minutes and then rinse. You could shampoo out the vinegar afterwards. You can probably google apple cider vinegar dandruff treatment and I'm sure you would come up with the exact recipe. I hope it works! =)

You can take acidophilus tablets, it is a pro-biotic supplement. My mother is a hair stylist for the last 35 years and she recommends this to her clients for adult dry scalp that is not dandruff. It works.

The Dermatologist I work for recommended for my baby when he had cradle cap to use the purple head & shoulders everyday until it went away. I did it for about a week and it went away. scrubbing it with a loofa helped too

Oh my god, I had that. It was gross. I not only lost my hair, but chunks of my scalp were peeling off. What was suggested to me was Tea Tree shampoo. It works!

C., have you talked to your doctor about it? It could be a result of the hormone change. Was a thyroid test done? One thing that worked for me is Nizoral shampoo. (the cradle cap is often the result of a fungus and this stuff works great on it), you don't have to use it often because it helps very fast.
It is a lot better than the Nitrogena shampoo with tar...

My son had it too, really bad and now he only has to use it once in a while. It is a prescription shampoo, you could google it to find out more about it.

Best wishes. Hope it goes away.

What finally work for me (when baby had it) was to slather his head with aquaphor and put a cap on his head for the night. In the morning, I'd give him a bath & wash his hair a couple of times. It was cleared up in a week or so.
