Does anyone keep the crib bumpers in the crib while the baby is sleeping? I have this beautiful crib set and I really do not want to take the bumper off for several reasons. But one of my friends told me that it is dangerous. I know everyone has an opinion. let me know yours.

What can I do next?

Small babies do not really move much when sleeping, I only put the bumper on once my little girl stated rolling and by that time I had no worry that she would get stuck on it and suffocate... she could roll.

I hope this helps.

I have friends who lost their baby to SIDs. It was devastating. He was not there first child and they did everything the same with the second as they had done with the first. I think the main thing that I took away from it is that it could happen to anyone. They are both teachers and very responsible parents and they lost a child to SIDs. One of the concerns with the bumper is that it traps carbon dioxide in the crib and does not allow fresh air to flow freely, limiting the amount of oxygen. You would never know if this is happening unless you had the air quality tested. Just some food for thought and sorry to be the Debbie downer. Just want everyone to prevent as many accidents as you can.

Hi,

I use the breathable crib bumpers as my daugther moves around alot and snuggles up to the sides of the crib. I feel much better knowing that she can breath well even with her face close to the bumpers.

E.,

Everyone is going to give you different advice on this. I left the bumper in the crib with all three of my boys. What I did was tucked the bottom down in between the rail and the mattress and tied it really well and I never had any problems at all. Just watch for any signs with the little one and the that baby is getting to close to the bumper or getting under it or if you are uncomfortable. If not then I would say leave it. Like I said everyone is going to differ on this. My 3 boys never bothered with them and all is well.

I had my crib bumpers in my crib for all three of my children. Just make sure you put your child in the middle of the crib. I did not have any problems with my kids sleeping near the bumpers. Ihad the same problem all the kids sets were nice.

Hope this helps.

I had bumpers on my sons crib but after going to a child CPR and safety class I went straight home and removed them.. I would advise you to take them out, they may look great but what is more important the bumpers or your baby??

Hello E.,
I have a 2year old. I left the crib bumpers in the crib until I changed her to the toddler bed. I had no problems what so ever with the bumpers. Here is a little helpful tip that I used to make sure nothing bad happened. Tuck in about a inch of the bumper between the crib and mattress. That way your baby can't get under the bumper and get tangled up. Hope this tip helped you.

I totally understand where you are comming from. I bought this pricey set from Pottery Barn Baby and had to keep in in a box for months. What I did was bought the breathable bumpers for my own peice of mind. Once my son could sit up and we droped the crib for the first time (he was about 5 months old) I put in my Pottery Barn bumpers and now he is 10.5 months old and again I will have to take them out soon as he now climbs on them (and everything in general) and he will use them to help himself out of the crib...so again I will put on the breathable ones as then collaps if he tries to stand on them. Oh the things I would have loved to know before I bought this pricey crib set...LOL!!! Best of Luck!!!

you can get "breathable bumpers" at babies r us, they keep the baby's arms & legs safe, but do not pose a sids threat.

I've kept mine on for both kids and haven't had a problem. I read that older babies can use it as a step to get themselves out of the crib but I haven't read anything else. I think without the bumper their little legs get into the spaces between the bars and can get twisted.

Hi E.,
I used crib bumpers with both my kids (they both enjoyed being snuggled up in the corner of the crip) with no problem and all my friends have used bumpers too. Enjoy them.

I have a 10 mth old and a six yr. old. For my first one, I left the bumper on the whole time she was in the crib. However, for my second one, I decided when he was around 3-4 months old, it was best to remove it. I had a beautiful bumper made for his crib, so I was sad to part with it but I am so glad I did! After hearing all the stories of them not breathing after getting caught underneath it, I just could not sleep well at night. I bought the breathable bumper and can sleep great at night now with no worries! Hope this info helps!
