I have used Aveeno diaper cream on my daughter since birth with no problems. But when she got a rash it didnt seem to do much to heal so on rashes I used Destin. Well aveeno can be hard to find so I switched to Destin full time and I noticed my daughter crys when I change her diaper and put the cream on. Almost like the cream is burning her. She also messes with her self alot more when I change her like something her. Has this happened to anyone else?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hey you guys thanks for the responses! Wow alot of good information. My daughter has been on antibotics for an ear infections for a little less than a month and I am wondering if she could be having a reaction. We have a doctors appt on Friday so I will ask her to check for the yeast infection because I dont see any redness or bumps. I switched back to Aveeno a few days after posting the message and so far no crying. But I do have another question. I have been putting diaper cream on my child since birth after every diaper change just about rash or no rash. I did it to protect her from wetness (especially at night) and protect from rashes like it says on the creams. Not just for use when they get a rash.

So I wanted to know how many you do the same thing? Put a cream on as a protectant not just a healing device?

I was given a cream from my sister in-law and it works great for my 7 month old. It is called Resinol and I have to order it from the pharmasist but it comes in, in about 3 days. I always order the 3 oz tube. I do not use it on every change but daycare tries to. My daughter has only had one (maybe 2) diaper rashes and they went away in about a day each time after using the Resinol at every change. The Resinol is not just for diaper rashes. It is for any type of rash along with insect bites. My SIL still uses it for thing other than diaper rashes on my 9 and 3 year old nieces.

My son just had the worst diaper rash he's ever had since he was born. He's 15 mos. now. I also used Aveeno. It didn't work, I then tried Beaudreux butt paste--ouch! Way to hard to smear on. I then went to Balmex like the commercials. The package said I would see a noticeable reduction in redness in one diaper change. It did. I kept using it for 2 days. It is gone. I did look at all of them at the store and some of them do have different ingredients. So try another one. It worked for us.

Used Desitin on my now 6yr old as a baby w/no problems but my 2yr old son screams with any of the 'white' rash treatments. Flanders or A&D work great for him.

Typically, I only use them if he has a rash, which isn't very often but if he has any sign of diarea I'll use it to protect.

We used the clear Balmex to prevent rashes in DS and he never got one until he was 18 months old, when he started daycare. We didn't use it at every change, maybe once a day or so. When he did start getting rashes, usually due to antibiotics, we use Butt Paste and it is awesome. I will also use this for DD if she gets a rash.

Yes! I had the same experience when my daughter was a little baby. I swear by A&D ointment (original, w/out zinc oxide) when the rash is so bad the skin has opened. It is soothing and protective and has never produced screams. Desitin has a place, but not for severe rash.

Every baby is different, and all these different responses prove it. My baby had a very hard time with diaper rash. I used Balmex at first because that's what I used with my first baby. This was useless. I tried the Desitin Creamy, and it was also useless. Based on recommendations, I also tried the Butt Paste, Doc Brown's, and one other one I can't remember the name but it was expensive and brown and smelly. No luck- she cried when I put them on her. I FINALLY tried the original Desitin (has to be the original) and it helped. No problems since. Good luck- I know it's frustrating. Make sure you talk to your doctor about it, because it COULD be eczema.

Hey A., I use and have used for over 4 years now, Flanders Buttocks Ointment. I have to ask for it from the pharmacy, they keep it behind the counter. It is the best I have ever tried. There is also a website where you can go it is: www.FlandersButtocksOintment.com. Also, if this is yeast you might want to try Maalox just rub it on the irritated area and you should start seeing results pretty quickly. My son used to get the yeast after taking an antibiotic and the Maalox worked. On the Flanders, I still use it on my 4 year old when he gets irritated. Hope this helps.

I never used cream unles my daughters had a diaper rash. I used Aveeno, Butt paste and one that escapes me at the moment. There was one time my oldest daughter had a diaper rash for more than 2 days and the doctor said that she had a yeast infection and Lamisil AF would take care of it. If not they had a slightly stronger anti fungal that is prescription only. The diaper cream could also be uncomfortable because it is cold.

I was using a cream called Flanders. It worked really well, but sometimes what I really needed to do was just use a light powder (the cornstarch kind) and then let her bum breath. If she has open skin then it can be irritating her. Until the rash is gone I would really limit her juices and be very quick to change her diapers.

Good luck! Diaper rashes are tough and I know it must hurt you more than her when she's hurting.

Desitin can burn/sting when the child has a diaper rash. I agree with another post that recommended Flanders. It is awesome and heals the rash quickly. You can find it at a local CVS/Walgreens at the pharmacy counter. They can order it for you if they don't carry it for no extra charge. I highly recommend it! Good luck!

I noticed this problem when using the Original Desitin, and that it was a lot better with the Desitin creamy. However, I highly recommend the Beaudreux's Butt-Paste. It's a little more expensive but well worth it. The few times I've had to deal with diaper rash this time around, the Butt Paste has helped clear it up a lot faster than the Desitin creamy.

I learned the hard way with frequent diaper rashes in my son. Here is my advice for all new moms and those experiencing problems for the first time. The best solution for diaper rash is cornstarch powder with each change and Dr. Smith's when a rash occurs. Only use the Dr. Smiths when there is redness and it works almost overnight or within a few days for severe rash.
Dr. Smith's can be purchased at CVS or special ordered at your pharmacy. It comes in a tub. Its worth the extra expense to keep bottoms healthy!!

My son would also scream when I put Desitin on him. I tried other brands and he would do the same. I decided it was the zinc oxide found in just about every rash ointment. I talked to my dad who is a PA and he told me to try the regular A&D it is in a white and gold bottle. It is the original A&D and does not contain zinc oxide. I used that and he never had a problem with it. Also I had tried some stuff called Aquaphor which is similar to vaseline and that worked to prevent a rash in the first place.

**ADD ON to your what happened**

Yes, antibotics can cause yest infections just the same in little girls as they can for us big girls. I only use diaper rash stuff if it lookes like my son is getting red or if he starts having teething poop which can be very runny and smelly. I use either Destin or Balmx. A good diaper should feel damp to your hand with no obvious moisture on it. This is how your baby's bottom feels too.

I don't think (well in a way) it's the diaper cream hurting her. Sounds like a yeast rash/infection. That would cause her discomfort with the destin. You could try an OTC anti fungal foot cream 3 times a day and you should start to see a difference in less than 24 hours. Also, a good tip for all of you moms-a hair dyer when there is diaper rash. Air is good for the bottoms but who really wants a pooping, peeing baby on their carpet? Take a hair dryer to their bottom at every diaper change. ***USE LOW HEAT AND HOLD IT ABOUT 3-4 FEET AWAY FROM THE BABY*** Also, her 'messing' with herself is completely normal. She found a new place to explore and does it more so cause she can't see it, only touch it. Heck, I have a daughter and a son and they both did/do it!!

Good luck!

Hello Alikar

I have read your question and I think I have an answer. Could it be that your child is allergic to zinc oxide which is what is in it? You may want to try vaseline and baby powder to see if that works with your little one. If not consult with her doctor:-)

I had that same problem with Destin I stopped using it. I like the butt paste another mother mentioned and I'll tell you what my doctor said to try (she tried since she's a mom too). I put corn starch in one of those shakers (like a chef uses for powder sugar) and I put that in the diaper and some on the baby's bottom and when I haven't had any creams to use I have used M.O.M ( mil of mag) on a cotton ball with the corn starch, it worked really well the corn starch added seemed to help the rash calm down and go away faster. Best of luck.

Hi A.,
I have been using vitamin A&D ointment on my child for preventive measures since she was born. She is now 6 months old and so far no diaper rashes. I've been told that most babies get diaper rashes once they start eating solid foods so I'll see how it works in the future.
I have a 4 year old step-daughter and when she was younger she got a really bad diaper rash. My husband used Aveeno initially & it didn't work at all. He then tried desitin which worked a little better, but A&D proved to be the most effective. I know everyone's skin is different so hopefully you find what works best & I hope your daughter gets better asap! :)

I have never used the Desitin. However, my daughter has very sensitive skin and there are two things that work great on her diaper rash - both all natural products:

1. PORTER'S LINIMENT SALVE - it is AMAZING. Gets rid of rash overnight. Have to order it online though - can't find anywhere else. I google it. Usually order from Kentucky General Store. Very soothing to the skin. Even on a raw, bleeding rash, my 22 month old will stop crying immediately b/c it feels so much better right away. I use it for lots of things - on cuts & burns. Order 2 or more - my husband uses this when he has chafing to his skin too & loves it.

2. Best Seat in the House, by the Grassroots line at Kohls is also very good - it's in their make-up section. I still prefer the Porter's Salve though, but this is good if you like to use a diaper cream on a daily basis.

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem with Desitin when my now 3 year old was an infant. She would scream, "get it off, it burns!" I have use other creams, but bought Desitin because I had a coupon. I immediatly wiped it off and she was fine. I had forgotten which cream it was until my 5 month old started to get a rash the other day and I put it on her and she screamed. That brought back the memory of my other daughter and I threw the cream in the trash and swore to never buy it again! They should discontinue it!!! So sorry that has happened to your baby.

Hi,
I used witch hazel (available at all grocery and walmarts) on my son and he is now 5. To this day he has never had a diaper rash. Witch Hazel is known to heal, stop itching, and take redness away. It is also an anti-bacterial astringent. For keeping her dry, try baby powders that are all cornstarch!!! I have very sensitive skin and this is the only thing I can use. FYI-the witch hazel was recommended to me from a lamoz nurse for my stiches after the birth for healing faster and taking uncomfort away. It worked. So I used it on my son. Everyone I know I have told, they use, and they love it. It works

I was just going to echo Nicole...Burt's Bees is by far my favorite diaper cream, and is now available at Bed Bath and Beyond (if you receive the endless coupons they send in the mail, they can come in handy for Burt's products)...also, if you get a chance to give the babe an oatmeal bath, it's soothing to their bum. I haven't really had a problem with diaper rash, but when I see my son's bottom getting a little red, I put vaseline on it. It really seems to help a lot. I'll put it on before bed and when he wakes up there is no more redness. That might help with your daughter's rash. It doesn't burn and is clear so if she moves or anything, it doesn't matter. With my oldest son, I used Flanders and I loved it. If my 8 month old gets a rash, that is what I will use. It is a little more expensive, but I believe it is worth it. Hope you find something that works. I know diaper rashes can be a pain for you and for your daughter. Good luck!

the best cream I found and still keep around - even tho I have no children in diapers now (well, one is in pull-ups at night) - is Boudreaux's Butt Paste. I got it at Target and it may be a little more expensive, but it really makes a difference in actually healing AND soothing rashes.I liked Desitin because the smell made me think of babies, but for me it really didn't work to heal or sooth rashes. It did, however, work well overnight - it made a great barrier for nightime wetness. Hope this helps!

Hi A.. I used to put Desitin on my oldest son with every diaper change, but he was constantly keeping a rash - right up until we had him potty trained. With each of my other 2 kids, I was turned onto Triple Paste by a pharmacist friend of mine. It has been wonderful and we haven't had any issues with it.

Something else that you might consider would be to make sure that your daughter doesn't have a yeast infection. What we thought was diaper rash on our oldest, turned out to be a yeast infection that had to be treated with another medication. Just a suggestion.

Hi A..

I've used Desitin Creamy on my little girl since she was born and haven't had a problem although it doesn't protect against wetness all that well so when she would start to get red, I tried the Boudreaux's Butt Paste but it did nothing and then I read in a parenting magazine that Balmex cleared up redness in just one change and, lo and behold, it did! Also, the Balmex isn't as thick/hard to wipe on/off as the regular Desitin is. Also, regarding the stinging, the Zinc Oxide is what causes it to sting initially. That's why I tried the Boudreaux's (I've heard it doesn't have the sting). So try the Boudreaux's or Balmex. Anyway, there's my two cents. Good Luck!

The destin has and still works for me with both my children. the buttpaste is also good, doesnt apply as smoothly but I got mine from the hospital when my baby was born. It's also possible that the rash could be from a food alergy or could be the skin condition called eczema. Both my sons have it..but I have never had it break out on their butt. And with eczema if you try and treat it with the wrong medication it gets worse and more painful. If it is a rash though you need to keep your baby as dry as possible by changing her diaper very often and using the buttpaste.

Hi A.!

I was unable to use many kinds of ointments on my 4 yr old and 22 month old. We had to use Aquafor( in the lotion aisle) for everyday protection and Lotramin AF(it is commonly used for Athletes Feet, was told to be used by our ped) at the first signs of yeast. Whenever we would have an antibiotic the yeast would soon follow. My mother in law had leukima and the Aquafor was the only thing gentle enough for her to use...so it is safe for our precious little ones. As for using the creams as a preventive...I don't, you may want to talk with your ped about it.

Hey there, I have the same problem with my daughter. I use Boudreaux Butt Paste. (not sure if I spelled that right) I can't put Destine on her if she has ANY pink or rash any where. Destine does protect better against wetness. For example if my daughter is on an antibiotic and I know that she will be getting diahrea, then I will put Destine on her. But, if she already has the slightest break out, it burn her. The Butt Paste is a life saver and it really does work too. Use that and she should be better in day or two.

I was always told to use nothing unless there was a rash present. Never had trouble with Desitin, but when they had severe rashes we needed something prescribed by the doctor. Nystatin at one time... and something else another time for a different type of rash (yeast vs. fungal... ick, I know). So if rashes are a real problem I'd at least call the doctor and describe it. Otherwise, I'd use nothing, or one of the others that other responders have suggested.

A&D Ointment in the tube w/ the organge tab is really good. It's consistency is somewhat like vaseline. Hope this helps! Good luck!

if it is really bad, I'd switch to cloth diapers with wool covers, she may just need to breathe and be chemical free. disposables are full of harsh chemicals. and they are on your baby ALL the time, and her skin can't breathe.

hey,
ive had a similiar problem with my daughter. turned out that whenever she would cut a new tooth, she would get a rash. which really was a yeast infection because her ph levels were thrown off track.
ive tried the triple paste, destin, a&d, you name it.
she would scream at every diaper change.
for a while, we would stick her in the tub, and hose off her butt.
what ive found out that works the best is an anti-fugal cream and good old fashioned baby powder.(both, apply the cream on first, then the baby powder) we use the baby powder with each diaper change, and she hasnt had a bad one since then.
the only time we use the cream is when she does break out, and it clears up.
i hope this helps

Hello PR Mom. Read the labels on all the diaper creams you use and look for lanolin or lanolin alcohol. My children are allergic/sensitive to this and when I would use a product with it they would break out or turn red and scratch themselves. A lot of creams have it but if the Aveeno doesn't switch back even if you have to pay more. I know that with my kids, it was hard to find an inexpensive diaper cream but well worth finding the right one. Clip coupons or visit Aveeno's website and see if they send free samples or have coupons you can print on your printer. Good luck!

I've never used diaper cream when my kids didn't have a diaper rash. I've always used the destin with no problems , she might be crying because its cold. It is winter the creme might be cold on her butt try warming it on your hand for a few seconds and the messing with her self is a 2 yr old thing shes exploring her girl parts.

A little guy I watched had the same reaction, the zinc caused a burning sensation. I used bag balm (pet section/green tin/walmart around $5-7 )on him and he was very comfortable and there was noticiable difference during the first day of use. For day/night protection.. balmex daily skin protectant(4.99 Kroger baby isle) has been excellent for my little ones to avoid getting a rash.

My fourth child had the same problem. I feel in love with Boudreaux's buttpaste. Strange name, but it actually worked. It usually cleared the rash up within a day. Plus, it wasn't hard to wash off like Desitin.

I have used the diaper rash cream that is sold by Arbonne. My daughter has never had a diaper rash for longer than the next diaper change after putting it on. That stuff works like magic! I got it as a baby gift from my sister-in-law who swore by it, and I also bought some for my own sister when she had a baby and now she swears by it. Just check out www.arbonne.com or call 1-800-arbonne if you are interested. Also, I was just wondering why you put cream on her when she doesn't have a rash or redness? I only put cream on my daughter if she is red. Just a thought. Good luck! :-)

Find out if your pediatrician knows of something called Rosen's cream. It may only be particular to our peds, but it is awesome! It is a blend of zinc oxide, aquaphor and domeboro (I've only found it at Walgreen's with the anti-insect bite stuff). I have never tried to mix my own, but if you try, the finished product has the consistency of desitin, maybe a little thicker. We use it all the time, even on insect bites in the summer! Good Luck! Could also be a yeast rash, which your peds could also prescribe something, especially if she just finished antibiotics.
