"Diaper rash cream is supposed to hurt."
Those are the exact words from my dad.. . . Is this true???? I don't believe it, but my dad is adamant about it. My son is the point of needing to get a prescription for his diaper rash. I currently using Boudreaux's Butt Paste and it's not working. I have tried all the "natural" ways including baking soda bath, let it air out, Vaseline, chamomile tea in bath. I also have tried a little of the Up and Up diaper rash cream which is the one that is hurting my son. The second it touches his skin all hell breaks lose. He does squirm and cry a little with the butt paste but I assume it's just the application and pressure of applying it since he stops after I put his diaper on.
What is that cream that they put on cow's udder to help the cracking? I hear that it helps with diaper rash really well. I want to try that before I go to the doctor.
Oh but back to my question, is it supposed to hurt? Is my dad right with his weird views?

Ok since some people don't read the So What Happened? I'll write it here. I took him to the doctor that night after I got off work and he has jock itch which is a fungus. He's on lotramin and is doing well now. Thanks everyone!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

**When I put on the up and up I do expect it to sting for a little bit, and I have let it sit there for a few, but he still is screaming and looks like he is in pain. I am going to make an appt to see if it's something other than a rash. Thanks Mama's!!! Keep your ideas coming!
Michelle M. hahahha! You make me happy.

***Well just got back from the doctors and he has lot of lovely fungus going on. So jock itch cream it is!! And we already use cloth diapers but I think until it clears up I'll use disposables since if there is just a smidgen left over then it will come back. Thanks mama's!!!!!!

Hi, I used to use Butt Paste too, but use Bag Balm now. I think that's the one that you are asking about. It comes in the green square metal tin. It works great on my daughter, her worst diaper rash is generally 90% gone by the next day. I don't know where you can get it at stores, I get it from home. My dad lives on a farm so it's readily available. Hope this helps.

Have you tried corn starch? I have always put corn starch (because my aunt recommended it) on my kids tooshies when they got diaper rash. It helps keep the wetness away from their skin, because it absorbs it all. It's great. We just keep a box of corn starch at the channging table with a plastic spoon in it and spoon it on after you have wiped him. I swear by it! Sounds like a weird remedy but it is the best thing I have seen, including using cream. I think cream is still keeping the skin moist, so it doesn't help as much as something absorbing the wetness.

If the rash is that severe and nothing is helping it, I would think that it's more than a simple rash. It's possible that it's yeast or even a staph infection. I would take him to the doctor, just to make sure.

No, diaper rash cream isn't suppose to hurt. I know when my kids get bad rashes they squirm or cry when I apply the cream, but it's more from the pressure on the rash than the cream itself. Also, the solution from baby wipes can BURN a rash. I would suggest using a simple wash cloth with warm water for now.

Added note: I'm sure you're already doing this, but...make sure you change him the second his diaper is wet. Layer on the cream THICK. You shouldn't be able to see any baby booty underneath of the rash.

I hope you can figure it out soon. Rashes are no fun :(

No it is not "Suppose to Hurt"'; it is actually suppose to sooth it. What you are using is a WONDERFUL product and one I have my mom's purchase. So if it is not working, I suggest you take him in or call the peds (some will do it over the phone) and get a simple nystatin cream. SOunds like he may have gotton a little bacteria/yeast infection with the rash. Just nod at your dad; agree and then go and do what is right for baby. Sometimes you have to agree to shut them up and just do the right thing. (ie; putting powder on their butt, sleeping them on the stomach or feeding them cereal at 4 weeks). Just nod and do the right thing by baby. Good luck @ least with Dad. LOL ;)

I'm not sure if it's supposed to hurt, but I do remember when my kids were younger and if they had a bad rash, they would be crying. But that could just be because the rash hurt. Have you tried triple paste? You can buy it at target and it is the best stuff ever! My son had blisters on his butt and I saw a HUGE improvement after just 1 night. With in a couple days, his butt was all cleared up and looked good as new! I hope your little one feels better soon

it's not that it's "supposed to hurt"... but putting ANYTHING on cracked/raw/open skin WILL hurt. so, i would say it's normal for it to cause discomfort when it's applied, it prob burns at the first couple moments of contact. it's main purpose is to coat the skin so that the next urine/bowel movement won't further wet and irritate the skin(which is why the "creamy" ointments aren't as effective). my husband(he's a pharmacist) compounded an rx ointment that had lidocaine(or something similar) in it to help with the pain - i'm sure your dr wouldn't be opposed to giving something like that if it's that bad. good luck, hope he's better soon!

Nope- not supposed to hurt....I would buy some Aquaphor- it is thicker than vaseline and works well on my kiddos. We did Butt Paste and it worked for a while but eventually my daughter got a yeast infection diaper rash from the sugar in it when she was around 18 mos (she is now 3 and potty trained). If it is bad enough where there is open skin, I would see your pediatrician and get a little tube of Silvadine (sp?) -it is BURN CREAM! It will heal it and doesn't hurt. Please do not put your son through continued pain. Not sure what kind of diapers you are using too...but we can only use Huggies at our house- the Pampers dry weave causes our littles to get diaper rash.

Best wishes!

I anted to chime in on the Resinol. I posted once about a bad rash. Yeast infection was ruled out but frequent "air" time and Resinol worked. I had to order it online but I think a pharmacy can order it as well. I was lucky a good friend who is a pediatric nurse loaned me some while I waited. One thing about the Butt Paste, the "all natural" kind does not list boric acid as an ingredient but the regular kind does. Good luck!

Desitin works miracles - and while it may sting for moment it shouldn't hurt... raw skin and typically COLD medication is at the least startling and that alone would elicit a cry from most little ones. We usually used Desitin Creamy in the blue tube and that seemed to cure it.

My daughter had frequent rashes and her pedi recommended mixing Aquaphor and Maalox 50/50. Heat the Aquaphor in the microwave to get it really soft and more malleable. Then pour a little bit of Maalox in and mix. Keep doing this until the mixture is 50/50. After the first application of this my DD's rash starting going away in a matter of hours. We called it the "Miracle Cream" after that. Put in on very liberally and often. Also agree with PP's about the antifungal (athlete's foot) cream.

GL and hope he gets some relief fast!

I know if I have really dry, chapped and I add any moisturizer to it, it's going to burn while it soaks in. If your son's rash is severe, anything may hurt for a bit. That said, I always had good luck with Boudreaux's Butt Paste, and I would also use lanolin nipple cream mixed in sometimes -- it's great for everything and i still use it even though I'm finished nursing.

As others have mentioned, also check with your doctor for a yeast or other type of infection. Yeast infections can leave interior and exterior skin entirely raw.

And also, you don't mention what type of diapers you are using. If you are using cloth diapers, I'm going to recommend being politically incorrect and using good-quality disposable diapers for a while. Others may disagree, but the disposable diapers in the last decade or so do such a fabulous job of wicking away moisture -- I haven't seen any variation on cloth diapers that comes close to keeping their skin as dry.

The Butt Paste is actually the only one that didn't hurt my son (or at least the first one I tried). Desitin was REALLY bad for him.

Have you tried making your own - Zinc oxide and...(so sorry, my mind just blanked but I'm sure you can google it). I have several friends who had kids in the NICU and the nurses there SWORE by the home made version.

no - dad is not right neccessarily. It doesn' thave to hurt, but it might.

My son would get awful diaper rash. The pediatrician told me they were partly yeast infections (think jock itch). So I used to combine antifungal cream, cortisone cream & diaper rash cream. It helped.

Bottom line is that some kids have very sensitive skin and their urine is an irritant. I also think that the new style diapers (that hold so much fluid) can be an irritant to some little bottoms - try to change his diaper right away.

Good Luck Mama!

Ouch, poor baby! I use A&D ointment for my kids diaper rash, it works really well for anything except a fungus (my daughter gets yeast infections)

It should sting when being applied, the kids' bottom is sore and you're putting something on it, but it should stop hurting after a moment, especially if you use A&D+pain which is safe to use on children.

Use Bacitracin ointment on your son's bottom. You can buy it at Walgreens or any drug store. It is an antibiotic ointment and really works well. Diaper cream should not hurt, your son has some kind of infection. Smear it on his bottom a couple times a day. Udder Cream is a brand you can buy for humans, it is scented so I would not use it on his butt.

My son does the same thing with desitin. It must sting like crazy because he screams when I put it on if he has bad diaper rash. My doctor told me to mix regular Maalox with Aquaphor, until it becomes kind of a paste, and use that for really bad diaper rash. The Maalox helps keep the acidity down, if that's what is causing his rash, and the Aquaphor helps heal the rash.

I read the "What Happened" and I am glad to see this was resolved. I was going to recommend you try a fungal cream, especially if it was red and "shiny". My little girl has had "butt" issues forever! (And she is now in cotton undies and is potty trained and she is still having troubles - Ugh!)

Anyway, I do not think that any diaper rash cream should hurt. When our little girl was really bad, I dug out the topical spray that they sent me home with after my births. It was a topical numbing spray and helped tremendously. After the pain subsided, then we could apply the cream without the fuss.

Try this in the future if you need it and be watchful for the shiny patches.

Good luck ridding your son of this.

It is for sure NOT supposed to hurt. One idea to try is what one of the doctors I work for calls the "Magic Trio"- Try putting a layer of Lotrimin cream, followed by Hydrocortisone cream, topped with vasoline. It works great! I guess some rashes are actually caused by a fungus, which is why the Lortimin helps, and the cortisone soothes. and the vasoline helps seal it in. Good luck!

Dr. Smiths Diaper cream worked great for my son and his SUPER sensitive bum. My son could go from normal pink skin to bleeding rash in one diaper.

I could not use store bought wipes on him, they broke him out. I had to make my own wipes...I can send you the recipe if you want it.

Desitin caused an allergic reaction (swelling, hives, and he got a boil that needed draining).

Several times I needed prescription diaper cream (one for when the rash went fungal) and the other was just a super thick and healing cream (might have had some anti-biotic in it).

The cream will sting/burn a bit as it goes on...but then it should sooth the rash and make it feel better.

If it is that resistant to the diaper cream, it sounds like something else. My daughter used to get yeast infections as an infant and I thought they were diaper rashes but they wouldn't go away. They can give you a cream for it and it will go away almost at once. Good luck and I hope you can figure out.

The cow cream is called bag balm. Yes diaper cream hurts. Most likely your son may have jock itch :) My boys got it and was given a nystatin cream to take it away. It did not hurt and with insurance it only cost me $5 for the tube. It will take the rash away, and the pain away as well. I found that my boys broke out more with different diapers, so trying different diapers might help keep the rash down. For example, they could not wear pampers or store brand diapers, but could wear huggies.

Sounds like an allergy to either the wipes or the diapers. I had one who reacted to each. Pampers sensitive wipes and Pampers and Luvs worked well for my little people who were sensitive. For my one son who was very sensitive, I had to use the 7th generation diapers whenever he got a rash. Once it was gone, I could go back to Pampers. Only the Cruisers worked, not the Baby Dry, but Luvs were fine for my daughter who was less sensitive. I usually used Gentle Naturals Baby Eczema Cream for rashes. You can also use it in any diaper rash recipe that calls for Aquaphor, but it doesn't burn. GL!

If it is indeed diaper rash, find an ointment with the highest % of zinc oxide. That is the key ingredient in healing and resolving diaper rash.

It sounds to me like it might be more of a yeast infection, especially if it's bright red and bleeds. I would head to the pedi and have them take a look at it. Your son might need a prescription, but perhaps you could find something over the counter.

Also, when dealing with yeast infections or diaper rash, try to avoid using wipes. They contain alcohol, which on an open sore, BURN!!! Just use a wet rag or cloth to wipe. Or better yet, just splash some warm water on his bum (if possible). Try to avoid the "wiping motion" as much as possible, as this will just irritate the sore skin even further. Also, make sure the area is completely dry before diapering back up. Leaving moisture trapped in the diaper will just prolong the sores. If you are feeling up to the challenge, let him go bare bottom. The fresh air will do wonders to help heal his skin.

I think he's got yeast infection and that will not clear up no matter what kind of butt paste or diaper cream you use. Go to the store and get Lotrimin cream or, yes, I've used some leftover tubes of vaginal yeast infection medication. You can mix this in with a little hydrocortisone cream. The infection should clear completely up within a couple of days.

I stumbled on Caldesene Powder about a year ago. Honestly, this powder works wonders for regular diaper rash. I sprinkle some in my sons diaper with every change. Works 100 times better than any paste and I've used them all - Burt's Bees, Weleda, plus all the cheap stuff. Go to the pharmacy and get some of this powder (it's in a pink can) and it will eliminate all diaper rashes before they even begin, except for yeast of course.

I don't agree that diaper rash cream is supposed to hurt. The cows udder stuff is call "bag balm" in a green tin. I'm sure it works too. I use a 1% hydrocortisone cream (OTC) am and pm (let it soak in good before application of protectant) and Aquafor OR A&D and that does wonders reasonably quick....within a day or two depending on how bad it is. If it is fungal (yeast like rash) then alternate hydrocortisone w/ lotrimin or miconazole types w/ protectant after soaks in. hope this helps.

It's soft and smooth and washes off easily. Slather it on really thick - dont try to rub it in. Give him a full coat of it and then wipe the excess from your hands on the inside of the diaper. Worked every time for my sons' persistent and nasty rashes.

You might also try applying OTC antifungal cream and then the Balmex
