So What Happened?

I appreciate all the responses and help to my situation. My son is doing much better now, and after using the huggies diaper cream and it not helping I remembered my sister had given me a tube of the butt paste for my baby shower.. WORKED WONDERS!!! :0)...He is all cleared up and cut two teeth as well, so I'm thinking it is the teething rash that another mom spoke of as well.. Again thank you all so much and good luck with your little ones....

There is a fabulous product called Butt Paste. It is available at Wal-Mart, drug stores, etc. My children use it on my grandchildren. Hope this helps.

My son broke out with a really bad diaper rash from an antibotic he was taking. We used Butt Paste and it really worked great to heal it.

Try Butt paste. It always worked on my kids. You can get it at Target. Also, if the rash doesn't seem to be going away it may be bacterial, so you should probably talk to his Dr.

Good luck

My oldest son used to get really bad diaper rashes when he was a baby. None of the regular diaper creams seemed to help. Our pediatrician prescribed Niastatin (sp?) which helped clear up the rash so quickly! I later found that an over the counter yeast cream worked just as well as the prescribed cream and was cheaper. I would have your doctor take a look at it just to be safe. I have never tried goldbond, but I have seen that they make one for babies, so you could ask the pediatrician.

I like Triple Paste and Beaudreax's Butt Paste (Natural formula). Also apply over the counter anti-fungal cream before the diaper cream. And sitting the baby in baking soda and water baths is excellent to neutralize the pH. Finally, leave the diapers off as much as you can to let the area dry out.

You should definitely try Boudreaux's Butt Paste, it really works wonders. My daughter rarely had diaper rash and we attribute that to using regular vaseline on her after every diaper change. It protects their little bottoms by acting like a seal and makes it a lot easier to wipe.

The only thing that worked for my son was to load on, and I mean load on, the Desitin diaper cream (the only brand that worked) and then we had to top it off with the baby powder that has cornstarch in it! He had to have huge barrier built up. Also, change your son often and do not use wipes on him until it is cleared up (clothes with water to wipe)!

Also, if it doesn't clear up soon then have him checked out by his doctor because like the other posts were saying it could be something more like a yeast which requires a possible prescription cream! Good luck!

Hi there,

My son is very sensitive to any creams, so we use cornstarch. Not the kind that comes in the baby powder container, but the kind you get with baking goods in the grocer. He has to get totally dry before you put it on him, and then cover it liberally with cornstarch.

As mentioned, if it's red and has raised bumps it is likely a yeast infection. Prescription Nystatin works wonders with my son. Lotrimin wasn't strong enough to do the trick.

Good luck!

LOTRAMIN CF!!!!! Works wonders on the rash that will not die! Typically because if it is really bad rash then it has spawned a yeast infection (diaper area is good for yeast as it is dark and moist) and Lotramin CF was recommended by my ped and we adore it!!

Mylanta is excellent. My pediatrician recommended it. Put it on cotton balls and apply externally to the diaper rash. Works like a charm. Might not be diaper rash by the way. Sounds like a yeast infection/thrush. They look like that on baby boys. You need a prescription cream to fix that.

Let him be diaper free for aawhile after his next diaper change - let him run around naked in a confined area for a at least 20 minutes. Also, always make sure his bottom is dry before closing the diaper. And don't put on any creams or ointments until he is totally dry. IF you rub on cream immdeiately, it just traps the moisture from the wet wipe on his skin and doesn't help. I always found that Desitin worked wonders.

However, I second the suggestion to go to the doctor, especially if you have been doing the aboce, diper rash that doesn't heal is often an infection of an allergic reaction.

Might be a long-shot, but it could be eczema. My daughter had eczema on her diaper area, and it didn't go away until I stopped giving her baths every day (once or twice a week instead) and started to put Curel lotion on it. The pediatrician was so confused to see eczema on my daughter's diaper area, but she agreed that's what it was.
In any case, if you or immediate family members reacts strongly to dust (i.e. you avoid vacuuming because you feel it always makes you sick to do it, etc.), your son might have a dust mite allergy. Make sure to change his sheets frequently and if you have a very old mattress in his crib maybe buy a dust mite cover for it or a new mattress. Or it could be any number of allergies, but before you start pulling foods out of his options, check with the doctor.

Hi D., I'm not sure about gold bond for babies, but there's a diaper rash cream called triple paste, it is a bit expensive but it works. Also using cornstarch helps as well. To give him double protection apply the triple paste and then apply the cornstarch. If it doesn't show any improvement in about 3 days you should probably take him to the doctor to make sure he doesn't have a bacterial infection. Also make sure and change him every two hours or less depending. You don't want to keep a soiled or wet pamper on him.

Use a product called Bag Balm. It is in a green canister that has a picture of a cow on it. I have found it in feed stores or older hardware stores. I have also found it in Dover Saddlery off of route 50 towards Loudoun County.

Bag Balm was recommended to me by a pediatrician when my oldest was a newborn. My son had a severe diaper rash that nothing worked on. When I used the Bag Balm the diaper rash was gone within hours. Hope this helps! :)

The many responses below are great. I would like to add to the list is that in my experience, if it is just rash, giving my kids daily baths helped along with ORIGINAL Desitin (large percentage of zinc oxide, amen!) until the rash cleared up.

I would take him to the doctor. It may not be diaper rash, but a yeast infection instead. As far as diaper rash creams, though, I prefer straight zinc oxide cream. A&D puts out a good diaper rash cream for babies. Zinc oxide is the active ingredient in most of them, but I prefer the A&D brand.

I would check with your pediatrician. If the diaper rash ointment hasn't cleared it up in a week it may be a yeast infection. Also you could try corn starch powder to keep the area dry.

If it looks kind of pimply and is persistent, it might be a fungal infection (yes, like a yeast infection). You can treat it with lotrimin (buy the generic, it works just as well.). Also, barebottom time helps. It needs some air (cover loosely with a blanket so YOU stay dry too! For the lotrimin, start with a clean bottom, put on a good coating of lotrimin then a good coating of a diaper cream with the HIGHEST zinc oxide content (I think Johnson & Johnson is good). Do not let a wet or soiled diaper stay on! Change when the least bit wet. Do not wipe the diaper cream off totally unless soiled. Do not use baby wipes, just use water on a paper towel or cotton balls. Be very gentle. If in doubt make a trip to the Dr. It can make a baby miserable to have bad diaper rash.
Good luck!

I have found that the best diaper rash product for healing is the "Triple Paste". However the best product for protecting seems to be the Desitin that comes in the purple tub. So what I do is put on the triple paste (which seems to absorb into the skin eventually) and then put another layer of the Desitin over top of that.

The very best thing that you can do for your son is try to identify the times of day when he is least likely to go and give him 20-30 minutes of "naked" time on a waterproof blanket or towel. You will be amazed how much better he can be with just those 20 minutes of air.

Some other things -

Here is what a yeast infection looks like:
Yeast rash - when the skin is damaged, yeast from the intestines can invade the skin. This especially occurs with antibiotic use or prolonged rash.
Appearance - it is a red, raised, patchy rash with sharp borders, mostly over the genitalia but with satellite spots sprinkled around the diaper area. Click here to view a picture of a yeast diaper rash.
Treatment - in addition to the above measures, there are two commonly used anti-fungal creams:
Clotrimazole - over-the-counter. Apply 2 - 3 times a days beneath the other creams.
Nystatin - prescription. Not necessarily better, just different.
Acidophilus - this is a natural bacterial powder that fights off yeast. Click on it to learn more.

The advice is all good below. Once you have the rash cleared up, the only two things that worked for my son and his toxic diapers were Original Boudreaux's Butt Paste (not the new "green" version), and Bag Balm, which is found in the pet department of Walmart or at farm-type feed and pet stores. It was originally made for cow udders, and is perfectly safe for human use. Bag Balm is vaseline-based, and works as an excellent, almost foolproof barrier to prevent the rashes in the first place, and does have soothing and healing properties that vaseline doesn't have. Make sure he is thoroughly dry before applying liberally. Good luck!

What does the rash look like? Is it pink or red with strong borders? If so, it is likely yeast and they require anti-fungal treatment. My pediatritician recommends Lotrimin AF. Prescription Nystatin made it worse. Normal diaper cream won't do it.

As mentioned, bare butt time and sunshine are also good for clearing up diaper rash.

Here is what worked for me:
1. Change diaper as frequently as possible
2. When changing - use only warm water to clean the area (I had a bowl of warm water and used cotton balls) - no wipes until the rash clears (they irritate)
3. Be sure to pat the tush dry with a clean washcloth
4. Let the area air-dry for as long as possible (I would sing to my kids while they laid on the changing table with the area exposed to air)
5. Then put the diaper cream on - the BEST diaper cream we found was by Weleda - available at Whole Foods (more expensive but so worth it). I can go on and on about how it was like a miracle for us! Dr. thought my son had a fungus and wanted me to use these medicated creams - I tried the cream by Weleda first and the rash completely cleared!

Good luck

Hi D.,

Try Desitin. I used it with all three of my little ones and some I watch and it seems to work the best. Also if that doesn't help, mix a little fungal cream with it and apply that, that always did the trick with my babies. Babies sometimes get yeast infections and the fungal cream takes care of that.

Hi... I am the mother of 4... I can honestly say that I tried BALMEX with my eldest, down to my youngest and it truly did the job. Basically, it required minimal usage. I applied it at the first site of any rash or redness and neither of them had problems a second time around. I used it so infrequently, that I had the same tube for a few years. My kids are not close in age, but Iwas able to use it for any other infant in my family that may have needed it. I highly recommend it over Desitin (which is smelly and hard to get off). Balmex smells better and is much smoother. Also, it is imperative to change your baby freqently and don't be afraid to let his tush get some air throughout the day. Just make sure you keep waterproof pads underneath...since he is a boy, you may want to lay him on his belly while air drying. :-) I truly give BALMEX 2 thumbs up for effectiveness and the pleasant smell. we had this problem and treated with Lotrimin and it cleared right up! Sometimes the diaper rash is contact irritation, and things like regular diaper cream work because it protects the area from further irritation. Other times, the rash is from thing like yeast infection and the lotrimin will clear that right up.

I get an ointment from the natural food store called Un-petroleum -both my kids have very sensitive skin and petroleum based ointments/creams can irritate. My kids call it the "special" cream because it gives them relief so quickly, usually the rash was almost gone by the next day.(these were horrible, raw rashes for my son). It is made by Alba. I second lots of fresh air and the ped if it doesn't go away soon. Good luck!

You can talk to your doctor about prescribing Greers Goo.
It is a mix of zinc oxide and lotrimin and monistat or something like that.
He could have a yeast rash that won't go away with regular diaper cream.
You could mix half monistat and half zinc oxide diaper cream and try it a few times a day. if you see it clear up quickly, it is likely yeast.
