Dog Urine on Carpet

I would call a carpet cleaning service. My parents have a nasty cat that pisses everywhere, Stanley steamer came and treated the carpet with some special stuff for pet odor and then steam cleaned, it got rid of the odor completely. Didnt stop him from doing it again though, nasty cat.

Lots of great answers here. As someone who fosters dogs, I will also add that even if you remove the smell to your satisfaction, dogs can still smell it. Dogs like to pee where pee has been before. You'll need to be extra diligent about watching the dog in her room, so you can correct him if he tries again. (interrupt him and quickly take him outside, praise him when he pees outside)

You make a mixture of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and dish detergent. I cannot remember the exact amounts of each, but google it and you'll find the recipe. It WORKS for getting rid of the urine smell. All those pet products they sell in the store for getting rid of urine smell do not work!

My mom's cat peed all over her carpet when we brought our dog over, it was awful but she used this mixture to clean it and it works. My own son, who's potty training has had a few accidents on the carpet and couch...I use this mixture and the smell is completely gone. After spraying it down with this stuff, or soaking it, I use a Bissell cleaner to suck up all the water, love my Bissell Cleaner!

We have had good luck with white vinegar/water followed by baking soda/peroxide/dish soap. It's a bit of a process but I find it works really well and is cheap to boot. I would hesitate to use heat on your carpets as you can set the stain/smell in the carpets.

For a fresh pee stain:
1. Absorb as much pee as you can. We use paper towels and stand on them (cheap flip flops protect your feet and wash easily) to blot as much pee up as possible. Layer a few towels down, step on the towels to blot. Repeat with fresh towels until you no longer pick up wet.

For an old pee stain:
1. Find the spot(s) either using your nose or a black light. My husband takes one for the team and prowls around on his hands and knees for nose duty.

After drying or finding the spot(s):
2. Mix a half and half white vingear and water solution. I typically mix 1 cup with 1 cup but it depends on the stain size and/or the number of stains. Liberally douse the stain. I mean really soak in the vinegar solution. You want to get down through the carpet and into the padding, maybe even into the subflooring if possible. Also make sure you are soaking an area larger than the actual stain so you get all of it. This step neutralizes the odor so be generous with the vinegar solution.
3. After drenching the spot, work the vinegar solution into the carpet with a scrub brush.
4. Blot the vinegar solution as before. A wet/dry shop vac is handy too for this blotting and the vac won't stink since the vinegar neutralizes the pee.
5. Allow the spot to dry or nearly dry naturally. (With the wet/dry shop vac you can move directly to the next step as it is dry enough.)
6. When the area is nearly dry or dried completely, sprinkle baking soda over the spot. You don't have to put a pile on the spot but a generous layer is the goal.
7. Mix a half cup 3% hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of plain dishwashing detergent. We put the solution in a spray bottle for ease of use. (We use Dawn because it is on hand. Do not use a caustic detergent. Also do not use a hydrogen peroxide greater than 3% or it may bleach your carpets.)
8. Apply the peroxide solution over the baking soda. Work the peroxide solution into the baking soda and the carpet with your hand or a scrub brush.
9. Allow the spot to dry completely without blotting.
10. Once the spot is dry, vacuum up the baking soda residue.

This has also worked on a poo stain. Just clean up the solids and proceed. Good luck.

I've had a lot of puppies, lazy kids, and old dogs, so I've got a little more experience with this than I'd care to admit. I find that the bissell pet cleaner only makes pet smells a hundred times worse. What you need is an enzyme based cleaner. I get mine at the pet store. They will have several to choose from (the one I get has "Urine" in the name) Once you get as much urine out of the carpet as possible, you squirt it on. Use enough so it penetrates to the pad. And then let it dry. It will continue to smell until the stain is almost dry. The enzymes actually eat at the urine, destroying it. It's a little pricier than your normal cleaner but in the grand scheme, $10 is better than a ruined carpet.

Also, though it sounds counter-intuitive, ensure your dog is properly hydrated and his pee won't smell nearly as bad.

You can use vinegar water in your carpet cleaner. It does work.

We have a BIssell cleaner and it works great. We have 3 dogs.

Are you sure you let the carpet dry between all those shampoos? Also, if you use too much soap it makes it worse.

We don't have the issue anymore unless a dog is sick or something but my strategy is... blot up as much as possible with paper towels. Then, i douse with straight vinegar and make sure you douse a spot larger than the pee spot so it goes through to the pad and maybe more.

Then, I soak up the vinegar by using a lot of pressure.

If my cleaner is handy at the moment, I will then use it with HOT WATER ONLY and suck up the excess vinegar.

In the past, I have also used the vinegar and then used a steam iron to get everything up. This works well but it stinks like crazy (the steam/vinegar solution)

In the future, watch the dog closely when he is in that area because they can find an old pee spot with their nose...

Look for enzymes in the list of ingredients. The enzymes "eat" away the stain to get rid of it.
