Dropside Crib and Furniture

Hi Mamas!

In the future I will be rearranging my boys room and taking out the crib etc...Well the crib is a dropside with a double dresser and changing table. A really nice set and still in great condition. I don't want to have to sell the pieces individually but I know that dropside cribs are banned now. Are we still able to sell a set like that privately through Craig's list or Ebay etc.....? Would you still buy a dropside crib? Let me emphasize that Ours was not on the recalled list and is a sturdy crib and all three of my kids have used it. Youngest is 16 months old.

Yes I believe a law was passed that retail stores can not sell them.

What can I do next?

I don't know what the law is, or will be, but no I would not buy a dropside crib. As short as I am (4'11"), I do have a very hard time putting baby in and taking her out of her crib. Still would not buy a dropside, and won't use the one my parents bought for her. Sorry.

Daycare gets to use them for 2 more years.
I have a drop side crib and it was never one of the recalled ones.
The mechanism for raising/dropping the side are all sturdy heavy metal parts that are firmly attached and properly installed.
I would use my crib again.

Both of our cribs are dropside and we just went to home depot and got some L brackets to attach the side that drops to the sides of the crib for good. It's the same way the other side attaches (that doesn't drop) so it's safe and we don't have to worry about getting new cribs. (I don't know if ours were on the recalled list or not, we just did it anyway)
Maybe you could do that and it dosn't alter the look of it but just gives you peace of mind.

I would not buy a dropside crib, actually I refused to buy one even years before the recalls because they just seemed unsturdy to me. I would also feel weird about selling one, simply because of my personal uneasiness. I would just worry about the family who aquired it after it was gone, and it's not worth it to me to worry needlessly. I also have a 7yr old car seat that appears in great condition, but I won't use it or sell it simply for my peace of mind.
There are plenty of people out there who would buy the dresser and changing table without the crib, we actually bought our pieces all seperately. Do whatever YOU feel comfortable with.

Trash the rib and sell the other pieces.

OR

what we did was take the end of the crib (we had solid 'camel back' ends) and made it into a little headboard for our girls. You just use the crib mattress, the crib springy thing that the mattress is currently sitting on and have 4 little supports made for each corner of the 'springy thing'. Our guy used 2X4 to make an 'L' for each corner. Attach the 'head board' to the feet and you're good to go.

We have a twin dust ruffle that you fold in about 1/2 length wise to cover the legs and you get to use the same mattress, same crib sheets, we just use a blanket as a 'comforter' . My kids are 4 and one of them is pretty tall and she still fits nicely on her little bed.

I would still buy one, and I needed one. I could not have done it with a regular one because I am too short. That said, it may be illegal in your state to resell one, so you will need to check. Also, contact the company that make the set, they should have a modification kit to turn it into a solid sided crib making it sellable.

Since it is a full set, you could probably still get someone that would buy it. I know some people that have looked for dropsides just because mom is shorter. It is very easy to convert a dropside to a non-drop. I would consider buying a dropside if the price was right, no recalls and I could easily convert to a non-drop if I thought it was needed--especially as a set. It is only banned in manufacturing and in stores ,not second market.

They aren't banned in an after market. They are only banned with manufacuers. AND since yours wasn't recalled it isn't illegal to re-sell it. A lot of people like the drop side cribs and will probably start looking online to get one since they aren't being made anymore. Go ahead and sell it on craigslist. ebay you would have to deal with shipping bleg!

I didn't know they are banned. Are they?

I personally would not buy a dropside crib. I wouldn't want to take that chance.

My MIL and FIL have a drop side at their house- it was not recalled either. But I am making them get rid of it regardless. Theirs has a changing table and dresser attached to it too. It is very nice. I am just not comfortable using it.

From the Washington Post, where is states that it is illegal to sell a drop side crib:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010...

Why take a chance? Pitch the crib if it can't be re-tooled into a NON dropside. Sell the other furniture.
