Fever for 4 Days in a 1 Year Old

We are on day 4 with a fever of above 102 in my 1 year old. It has spiked to 104.5 once and 103.2 as well. Motrin helps bring it down but my DD is miserable, uncomfortable and looks to be in pain. She will only drink some formula, and refuses food. I took her back to the doctor to be re-evaluated after 72 hours of fever. Her chest is congested, and she has a red throat. Strep was negative, and we were sent for a chest xray to rule out pnemounia. That was also negative. They believe bronchitis, possibly the flu, but 4 days of this? Is this normal? When should I become concerned?

What can I do next?

if you trust her dr then don't worry as this will eventually pass. keep her hydrated (Popsicles and pedialyte are great for this! )
if you don't trust her dr then take her to a different one for a second opinion.

my child once had a fever that carried on for 5 straight days. no other symptoms. i trusted the dr and they were right! it eventually passed and they got over it.

flu or bronchitis can last longer than four days. it's hard to stay calm when your baby is suffering, but you've handled it well by staying on top of it, and now you have to ride it out. cool cloths, formula when she'll take it, and both of you rest whenever you possibly can.

That's a tough age because they can't really communicate. If you've had her tested for all the stuff and she's negative, my guess is it's just a virus. Viruses can definitely create fevers for multiple days, even up to a week. Did you know that you can alternate motrin and tylenol every four hours? If you notice that she's getting relief close to medication time but then getting worse about when the dose is up, I would consider it.

I don't think there's reason for alarm but it's really hard to see your baby not feeling well. If you're unsure then I would call your doctor's office back and just ask to talk to a nurse. They can either help to allay your fears or after detailing the symptoms can tell you if you need to come back in for another appointment.

Try some popsicles or even those pedialyte popsicles. It's ok if she's not eating, but she does need to stay hydrated. Dehydration can make her throat hurt more too.

Flu or bronchitis can last longer than 4 days so you may have a couple of days longer even.

So long as she is feeling better tomorrow - then I wouldn't be too concerned, that's kind of what we looked for. A bit better each day.

Ours never ate food when congested.

All you can do is keep them comfortable, keep up the liquids, keep the pain meds going (as they suggest), and whatever else they suggest (humidifiers, etc.).

Hopefully she's feeling better soon. I would suggest taking her back in to be assessed (in a couple of days if she's no better) - you'll feel better and they can check her out to be sure it hasn't turned into something else - just to be on safe side.

ETA: The main thing to watch for (what to be concerned over) is if she gets worse at this point. Then I would place a call in to the nurse and ask what to do.

Continuing to work with the doctor is a good thing - and that's what any concerned parent would do.
Yes, illnesses take time to get over - sometimes weeks - sometimes months.
Keep working with the doctor.

I would be concerned now and take her back to the doctor. If they refuse to see you then I would take her to your nearest urgent care or Children's Hospital.
No way a child that young should be with a fever that high for that long.

if it is the flu or bronchitis they can keep getting fevers for up to 2 weeks but it does not always last that long in all cases. I have a 4 year old son and he has had bronchitis numerous times and I know for sure that his fever has lasted for 2 weeks at least twice out of numerous times of having bronchitis if it extends past a week in a half than that is when I would become concerned. If u have any other questions I will do my best to answer them as honestly as I can from what I have experienced. I also hope ur daughter gets to feeling better soon. My best reguards and I will keep her in my prayers. Get well soon little angel.

If the doc isn't concerned then I'd wonder if he was missing something. I'm just that way. So I'd probably go to an Urgent care of something after hours and see what they thought.

I'd be at the hospital if this were my child. She could go south SO easily and you might not have enough time to get her to the hospital.

Take her to a children's hospital, or at least to a hospital with an ped ER attending. (Children's hospital would be best.) They need to determine what's causing this and keep her hydrated intraveneously.
