7 year old is getting a hand held game system for Christmas. other than the obvious 3 D, what is the difference between DSi and 3DS? my SIL was told they are moving to ALL 3D, but NEW games will be compatible with both systems or that OLD games will be compatible with the newer ones?? Not sure which she was told. Just don't want to get something that is going to be obsolete in a year or 2! and of course Target is running a special on the 3DS; but my daughter says she doesn' know how to play games on that one (I'm sure she'd learn fast). Thanks!

What can I do next?

The 3DS is my vote, because you can turn off the "3D" and it has a new feature to play the games with...it's a round rubber control. My son likes it and every game is compatible with this...your sister is right, I heard and read the same thing.

Based on the 3DS affects on childrens eyes, I would go with the DS xl or DS lite. When they're 10 or so, then I would consider the 3D. Google it, there's plenty of stories about even adults have eye issues with the 3DS.

Go an put hands on to the systems.
I have played the 3DS and it gives me a headache.
The DSi isn't that old, so there aren't any OLD games, they still sell the systems it's not old.
The games for the DSi can be played on the 3DS but not the other way around because the 3ds games are in 3D .
The 3D effect on the 3DS can not be seen at all angles it has to be held in a certain angle and a certain distance from you it to work. I personally don't think the extra features the 3DS has are worth the extra $$.
Now if the camera isn't the selling point look into the DSlite, it plays all the DS games as well as having a second slot for playing the older nintendo handheld games.

You can use all games in both systems but you cannot get the 3d on the DSI or 3d on the 3DS if you are playing DSI games.

I like the 3DS better because it is smaller. Apparently it has a better camera if your kids are into that. Not sure what else because my kids just got their last night.
