Hello everyone.I have purchased several OTC products for my toe nail that has a fungal problem. The nail has become thick underneath and discolored. Sorry to be so blount, I know it's gross but I really need to do something about it. I am so embarassed by it and always refuse to go to the nail salon with my girls to get a pedicure! All suggestions are welcome.

Hi M.,

Use a high grade tea tree oil. Two of it's qualities are that it is an anti-fungal and also that it is penetrating. It will actually absorb into the nail and get to the problem and work from the inside out. If you can't find a grade high enough to help, let me know and I can help.

Regards,

M.

Try a product called "Vite 20". It will take some time for the fungus to grow out. Toenails grow slow so it will take some time. I used this morning & night. Keep the toenails dry & maybe only polish it when the toes are expose. I took the polish off for a while.

A home remedy I have heard of is to put Vicks Vapor Rub on the nail. It doesn't work immediately but it is said to work over time, hey it's worth the try!!! Good luck

Once it gets into the nail bed, the only way to get it is to take oral meds. Lamisil (Terbinafine). Assuming you have a healthy liver, you will do fine and a healthy nail will grow out after doing a course. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a699061....

It's worth it to have nice nails again! One more thought: sometimes having had a toenail fungus can set you up for an ingrown toenail later. I don't know why... If you go to the doctor for a Lamisil rx, ask about what you could do to maybe prevent ingrown toenail.

The only way to get rid of it is with an oral antifungal agent, which you can only get with a prescription. You'll have to go see your doctor.

try vicks vaporub 2x day for up to 6 weeks. it worked for me - strange. i found it on the internet and figured it couldn't possibly hurt, and it really did the trick. other than that i'd just say see your doctor.

Talk to your Doctor. There are topical and pill form medications that will take care of the problem but I believe they both require a prescription. Don't delay because it can spread!

Listerine therapy for toenail fungus: Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine Mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again. This a home remedy that is supposed to work. I would not do the lamisil because it can effect your liver. I am diabetic and they told me that they would not risk anything like that because it can hurt your liver. I would try anything before that and spending that kind of money. Let us know what works for you! Good Luck!

OIL OF OREGANO....it is expensive..about $25.00 a bottle at the health food store. You have to put a couple drops under your tongue and then, my husband drinks milk, because it burns. But a couple of months and you will heal it from the inside.

My husband has something like this and also hasn't had any luck with OTC remedies so went to see his doctor. The problem (as several others have mentioned) was that once the fungus is in the nailbed, you need to take an oral antifungal medication, and it's actually pretty h*** o* your liver. About 10 years ago, he took it and got rid of the fungus. But he has it again now, and now he's not exactly in tip top health, so he doesn't want to take anything that will be h*** o* his liver. He can live with an ugly toe, but he's rather attached to his liver, so he's just been living with it. I might mention the tea tree oil to him, since he doesn't have much to lose, but I'm skeptical.

Here's waht he said:
"It's an oral antifungal medication you have to take for a while. Yes, it's fairly h*** o* your liver. Should be safe for a healthy person who isn't taking any other meds, but some doctors don't like to take the chance, even when a person is in great health, and they'd prefer to remove the nail, since it's not exactly life-threatening. When I last looked into it (~10 years ago) the most common prescription was oral 'Lamicil' [thats the brand name] -- there may be better/safer drugs now. I took it once before with no ill effects."

If you remove the nail, <cringe>, it will grow back. The skin underneath is sensitive *because* it's not covered up. Once you remove the nail it toughens up. I think they remove the cuticle, too.

Hi M.,
My father had this and I think he applied Vick's Vapor Rub every day and it finally went away. Good luck!
I used a more expensive remedy when I had one. I can't remember the exact recipe now, but if the vapor rub doesn't work for you you can email me and I will look up the recipe for you. It involved soaking my toe/foot 1 or 2x per day for about 30 days in a mixture of vinegar, Guiness beer, and some bacteria (which eats the fungus). My husband bought the packets of the bacteria online. I think it may be the same bacteria you find in yogurt, but I can't recall. I can't remember the name of the bacteria, but if you need the recipe and details I will happily provide it for you. It was much more expensive than vapor rub, though, so I would try that first, for sure. Just be aware that you need to be patient. Like I said, the remedy I used took 30 days before I saw new, healthy nail growing in at the base.

Good luck!

Hi M.,

The Peoples Pharmacy suggest mixture of the items the others listed in their comments. http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/index.asp
The article I read in the newspaper said she found it under their home remedies.

Get Listerine, Vicks VaporRub and white vinegar. Soak toenails for 30 min. a day in a mixture of equal amounts of Listerine and Vinegar. At night put Vicks on your toenails and then socks. This takes patiences because nails grow slowly.

Hope this helps.

I cured my toe nail fungus with a solution that my uncle recommended. It took about 6 months, but now it's completely gone. (the fungus not the nail!) It's a solution of bleach, DMSO, and distilled water. The recipe is 3 ounces of distilled water with 1 ounce of bleach. Then add 4 drops of DMSO (www.ihealthtree.com has an 8 ounce bottle of pure 99.9% DMSO, which he recommends). Use a new Q-tip every time you dip in your solution and rub it on and in where needed twice a day. Use new Q-tips every time you go to get more of the mixture so that the bottle remains uncontaminated from the Q-tip's prior touching of your toe.

He says tree tea oil is a good to use in addition, but alone is usually not powerful enough to do the job. Also the DMSO is a very powerful skin transport vehicle so it's important to be careful to keep everything sterile. Any contimation in the solution will go straight under your skin.

I did this until the nail grew out enough where I could see new nail that was free of fungus.

Good luck and contact me if you want some of the DMSO that I have.

I tried EVERYTHING OTC too and nothing worked. And nothing will because it's UNDER the nail. The only thing that will is going to see your doctor and getting Lamisil. And you can't get a pedicure with a nail fungus anyway, you risk infecting others. Any reputable salon would not knowingly give anyone a pedicure with a toe nail fungal infection either, so beware of your own salon if they say they will if you have one.

Go to your Dr. and get a prescription for Lamisil or the generic. My husband had the same problem for years and they were so nasty. Lamisil is to be taken every day for 3 months and it cost about $900 - yes $900 BUT the generic version at Walmart (same presription) was only $10 for a 3 month supply. His feet look so much better it is amazing. Good Luck!

I've had the same problem for a while and have used tea tree oil from the Body Shop. Anyway, their oil is very good for this and it does 'soak' into the nail. Just be sure to put some under the edge of the nail as well cause you want to get as much coverage as possible. Also the leaving off nail polish helps since the polish sort of seals the nail. If you really can't stand looking at it, after you put the oil on, put a bandaid over it. I did this for about a month and 'out of sight - out of mind' and I didn't worry so much about it.
Another thing that I did (during the same time) I squirted Listerine (or cheaper generic from walmart) onto the toes as soon as I stepped out of the shower and didn't dry the toes - just let it soak in before putting the tea tree oil on. The other ingredients in Listerine have a good effect on fungus, too. Good Luck!!

Have you tried treating the root of the fungus..for example, if there is a systemic yeast overgrowth in the body, it may be manifesting in the toe. You could do an Organic Acid Test (www.greatplainslaboratory.com) which tells the level of yeast and bacteria in the body as well as the type and what treatments are effective.

Nystatin is a prescription antifungal with no negetive side effects which brings down the level of yeast into balence. The only warning I will give you if you find you have a yeast overgrowth is that the treatment will solve it for now, but you will need to make continual progress working on it to beat it. Pick up some books in Natural Food Stores (Harry's, Whole Foods) which address yeast in the body and you may get helpful info.

My friend did the the Yeast Connection (a book) diet and it was miraculous for her. Maybe order that back to help you get started.

Good luck, J.
