My son is 6 and is autistic and has adhd. He has always been a very difficult child but since he was born I fought for him every day. I have fought with therapists, doctors, teachers all to make sure he gets everything he needs. I have always put him before myself and have done everything I can for him with no thanks. He cannot speak well and doesn't speak often, but when he does speak, he means what he says. Yesterday he looked at me very seriously and told me he thought I was a super hero. It made everything worth it. Please forgive me, as this isn't an actual question, but I just wanted to give some encouragement. If you have a special needs child, don't ever give up on them. Always fight for them, always be there for them, it is so worth it.

On a similar note, I teach a spa / bath salts course to adults with autism once a week, and we are about 4 weeks into the new program with 4 participants. Two are verbal and two are not. One of the verbal participants has been quite defiant and won't participate much, but I keep my cool and keep plugging along and carefully answer all his "Why, why, why?" questions.
Last week I needed his help to unload some heavy items from the back of my car, as the street was icy and slippery and I don't have balance on my right side due an accident I was in, and it was clear he did not want to help me out and his facilitator was going to pitch in and do it for him, and I stopped her and said that it's ok for him to ask why and I patiently and honestly answered all of his "Why?" questions.
At the end of explaining my accident and personal health problems, he says, "Oh I was hoping when you got to the end of your story you were going to say you were better. And I am really sorry to know that you will not ever get better." He said it with so much compassion and honesty and then he helped me without question. And the rest of the afternoon was easy with him.
This is why I call my daughter (also autistic and adhd) our bearer of christmas mornings and you just had one of those christmas morning moments. Enjoy!
I have often taken my hat off to moms of special needs kids. You're amazing. I'm glad your son was able to recognize you as well. Now you always know what he's thinking.

There is always hope. Our son has ADHD, OCD, ODD, depression, anxiety and an eating disorder. When he was younger, he was never voluntarily affectionate. Bedtime, he'd ask us to just say goodnight and leave. No hugs. Suddenly, a few years ago (he's almost 12 now) he started giving hugs and kisses at bedtime and saying "I love you." It meant the world and still does!
It's a hard path we're on, but there can be unexpected, positive changes. Thanks for sharing your story!

Thank you for this. I don't necessarily need the encouragement right now but I will keep this thought in mind when I do. I am a mom to an 8 year old autistic son and whilst my son now talks(took him til about 7 to do so)I can definitely relate.
I'm sure you don't need the kudos but kudos to you for doing all you know you must because as you know we special needs parents not unlike other parents but different nonetheless must fight tooth and nail sometimes for our kids. Keep up all the great work.

Ah so sweet! My son has Autism too and it is difficult but he is my hero. As hard as I work to help him he has worked 20 times harder then most kids and lost out on a normal childhood as it was spent in doctor and therapeutic offices.
Give him lots of extra love.

Aw, man, I just teared up a bit. My son has autism, ADHD, Tourettes, a severe math disability, and a couple other things thrown in for good measure. I know exactly the feeling you're describing. Exactly.

How wonderful! Don't ever forget this. Later when hormones hit, he may say some ugly things. Don't let it throw you. Most kids do it and it shouldn't diminish what you are talking about here.
