Formula Switch...

I tried breast feeding my neborn son, when this did not work I began formula feeding him. He did great with Similac Advanced with Iron. Now he is on WIC and they use Enfamil. So he is now on Enfamil Lipil with Iron liquid concentrate. He does not seem to be adjusting very well to the switch in his formula. My concern is that he is spitting up more now than before (he never used to spit up) and he is much more gassy than when he was on Similac. Any suggestions or comments about this.

So What Happened?

So we had his one month appointment with the Ped. Our pediatrician recommended to try diluting his formula with a few oz. more water. If that doesnt work, I am going to talk to our wic people about using the Enfamil Gentlease. Thanks for all your valuble imput! I realy appreciate it!!!

My daughter got very gassy on regular Enfamil, I switched to the Gentlease (Enfamil) and she was much better. If possible it's worth a try, I suggested it to 3 friends in the past year and it worked for them as well.

I know the formula switch is h*** o* there tummys... I have a 9 week old who is very gassy. You can try gas drops, they are safe for the baby, after every feeding.

S.,

I have a friend who I believe was able to get a note from a doctor stating that her son needed to have the Similac formula. She was also on WIC and I believe she was able to get what she needed this way. (This was a couple of years ago, but I would check it out).

Hope this helps.

My daughter had similar problems with formula and I worked with her doctor to find the right formula for her. I wasn't on wic, but I worked with people that were on wic and if the baby needed a certain kind of formula adjustments were made. For my daughter, I had to buy her the lactose free formula, she is not lactose intolerant now that she is older, but as an infant she couldn't digest the lactose in the formula and it made her extremely gassy, and she would spit up. Just a suggestion.

i had your EXACT same problem - you can ask ur doctor about it and if he needs a certain type of enfamil WIC will change that for you with a doctors note. my son just got used to it after awhile but it took awhile (and i didnt know they'd change it w/ a doctors note)

I have been there. If you can get the baby's pediatrician to write a letter to WIC indicating why your baby needs to be on the Similac, they should cover it. I went thru this with my first son and that was all they requested for me to do. Good Luck!!

Did you try to mix the two formulas? When I was switching my son from breast to full time formula I would use the breast milk instead of water w/ the formula then slowly over a couple wks or so lessen the B.milk and start adding water.
My son also didn't do well at first w/ the WIC formula, i discussed w/ my Dr that I tried another formula to see if it would make a difference and it worked really well so he just wrote a prescription that I took to WIC and they changed it. Try talking to your Dr and WIC and see if that will work for you. Good Luck!!!!

I just had my 3rd child and I breadtfeed him at first then he was on formula. The last formula was enfamil lipil with iron. He did so bad on it. He was very gassy and would cry when he took his bottle and after. He is now on nestle good start suprme with dha and ara. I think this formula is really great for him, all those other symptoms went away. This formula has whey protiens which are very easy for baby to digest. Just remember you can't give it to them for 2 or 3 days and switch again because you dont think its working, give it a good week or so!! Hope i could help!!

We had the same problem with the formulas on wic with my twin girls. We went to the pediatrician and she wrote us a perscription for the one we liked. We turned that into wic and they basically over rode the system and allowed us to get the formula the doctor perscribed.
Hope this helps.

I was on WIC with my daughter, and I had the same problem. When I discussed it with my pediatrician, he wrote my daughter a prescription for Similac. WIC accepted that and changed my daughters coupons. I hope this helped.

Try talking to your Doctor, it used to be that if you could get your Doctor to agree that the other formula is better, he could write a prescription and WIC had to honor it. I don't know if it's still that way or not but it just doesn't hurt to try.

Hi S.,

We switched to the Kirkland brand formula from Costco. It's almost exactly like Enfamil Lipil. If you have or know someone who has a membership, try it. It's $19.99 for 2 cans. Almost double amount of the Enfamil large can. We also use the Kirland wipes.

Good luck.

Have you talked to the nutritionist at WIC? or your baby's pediatrician? They will be able to give you advice.

Ask your doctor about Carnation's Good Start. My son had a similar problem and it disappeared after we switched him to the Good Starts formula. Now, for some rason, WIC does not like to give people this formula. So, you have to have prescrition from your doctor to use it. Myabe they know it is good and don't want to stock it. Good Luck. I have four sons aged 17, 12, 5 and 3. I have been through a lot of formula and breast feeding. Stay encouraged.

When my son was a baby after 4 months of nursing I needed to switch him to formula. I was told the best formula to use is a soy based formula. Soy is closest to what you could offer him. Many formula's are milk based and some babies can not handle it. Or they may be lactose intolerant and using a milk based formula would not be a good idea. Hope this helps.

Hi S.,

I have taken care of children for the most part of my life and I have 3 children that all had milk sensitivities. I hope that I can help you with this problem:)

Often times babies are put on formulas that you would think are easy on their digestive systems, when they are not. I was on WIC with my oldest daughter and Neutramogen was accepted through WIC. It is an expensive formula, so I was very grateful that it was included. Switch your baby to that and see how much his symptoms change. It doesn't smell very pleasant, but you will find that your baby will be happier, less gassy and the spitting up will probably disappear. Also, Dr. Brown bottles are WONDERFUL. If you don't switch your child he will more than likely begin getting a runny nose, a red bottom and then ear infections. Give his digestive system time to mature and I would wait a little longer to transition him to another formula or whole milk. Often times mothers try to do that too soon and they seem in denial about why their children are with runny noses, etc.

Let me know what comes of this. If you haven't, buy gas drops and make sure to burp him every couple ounces. You should see a change in a few days on the new formula and try the bottles. They have them at Walgreens. Keep your patience and get rest. This is such a difficult time, when having to figure something like this out. Please try my advice. I promise you that you will see a change in a few days.

Good luck!
M.

Hi S.,
I am sorry you are having this problem. I don't know if WIC varies state to state. In Illinois they have just changed things and I am not sure you can even still get the good start with a prescription. Maybe you can still get the Nutramegin(spelling) I do know that you can just ask for the enphamil Gentle ease. That formula the WIC people can do without a doctor's prescription. It is supposed to be more gentle on an infant's system.
Good luck, M.
If you choose to do this, I think they can change out your food instruments. They may also have samples in the WIC office, or at your pediatrician's.
