I have used that system before too. Out of three, i do one about every 3 months. So at the end of the year, you can keep monitoring it.

You can request a credit report annuall for free, from each of the credit reporting companies (Transunion, Experian, & Equifax)- contacting them directly is best.

You are entitled to one free copy of your Credit report a year per crediting agency. If you are trying to fix your credit or check for inaccuracies I would recommend that you get your Equifax report. From my experience it is the most accurate. Below is the number that you can to contact them directly. Keep in mind that they are going to want you to sign up for some program. It is not required in order for you to get a copy of the report. Good luck.

Phone numbers for credit reporting agencies (CRA's), such as Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion, are often hard to come by. Sometimes the best thing to do is to get through to someone, anyone, explain your situation, and ask them to direct you to the right department.

Here are some phone numbers to try to reach Equifax:

Equifax's Phone Numbers:
Phone: 800-846-5279 or 866-322-3162
Fax: 888-664-4535 or 888-729-0083

You can look up the actual addresses to each of the 3 major credit bureaus and write to them to request your credit reports. Many states require that the credit bureaus provide their residents, upon request, at least one free copy a year from each bureau - more if you have recently been denied employment or turned down for credit.

The 3 major bureaus are Trans Union, CSC/Equifax, and Experian. Make sure that when you write to them that you provide all of the necessary information:

Full name
SSN
DOB
Address

Also send a copy of your driver's license and a recent utility bill to prove identity and address.

To get your credit score, you will need to pay extra.

Good luck!

This will give you an summary of all reporting from the three major bureaus. As with all, you do have to pay extra for your score.

You're entitled to one free per year. I've used this site several times.

annualcreditreport.com will work. If what you are also fishing for is your credit SCORE...That you have to pay for. And be aware there are three (3) major credit score companies:

1. FairIsaac (FICO is most common model)
2. TransUnion
3. Experian
4. Equifax

And each model works a little bit differently. And while banks each have their own custom loan & underwriting policies, I can guarantee you they are getting a credit score for one or more of the big 3. My bank uses FairIsaac's FICO score exclusively. Another thing to know...Your credit score is a moving target. You could pay to find out what your credit score is today...And then apply for a loan a week later and find out it is different.

While you review your credit report, priority rank your issues in the following order:
1. Payment history
2. Total amount owed
3. Length of time you've used credit (longer is generally better)
4. New credit...i.e. have you opened several credits recently/over a short time frame
5. Type of credit...some credit is more inoculous than other i.e. mtg credit vs credit cards.

I wouldn't use freecreditreport.com. I think the fineprint mentions that you have to sign up for a service for a monthly fee to get the free reports. Only use annualcreditreport.com

The Fed mandates you can obtain one free from EACH bureau per year. Plus if you contest anything, they must be willing to provide a new report showing the item has been removed/resolved. You can get it as mentioned already at www.annualcreditreport.com Also, now there is a rule for other sites that actually make you buy something to have a disclaimer on the page that you can get the free report here. If you are looking to repair your credit or possibly a large purchase down the road, you can stagger the requests so that you get one bureau report, say Trans union and then request a different bureau report 3 months later. I do this since we plan to sell and buy a house sometime in the next year. If you see something on one report that is wrong, you can write letters to all 3 asking for removal of this item even if you only saw one report. The others can then respond that it either was not there or removed. Saves you from having to waste your free report.

www.annualcreditreport.com is another site you can use. The credit reports from all three bureaus are free once per year. If you want your score it costs. A side note on the score you get as a consumer when you pay for it is TOTALLY different than the score model the banks use to determine your interest rate. I've never paid for a score since it doesn't give a true picture of what the banks see. I've seen the points vary by up to 100 points. Pull your credit and make sure everything is correct, if it is not then dispute the errors. Don't pay for a score. Hope that helps.

you can get one a year from annualcreditreport.com You won't get your credit score for free though, that does cost extra. You will get to see your report from the three major credit reporting bureaus. This info is very valuable if you are trying to clean up your credit or want to make sure there is no kind of credit theft going on. It shows inquiries made, outstanding credit/debt. I get mine for free every year! You'll need your basic info like name, ss#, and also they verify that it is you with questions about previous addresses or car loans, stuff like that. I have never paid for the credit score--the reports are absolutely free here and it is online and you can download and save a PDF copy. Best of luck.
