Hi...I keep seeing that there are so many women who do freelance. What exactly is this and how can I do it? I want to do something from home and I love typing.

What can I do next?

If you can take dictation, try ExecuTrans, http://www.execu-trans.com/. A friend of mine owns this company. Good luck!

To freelance can mean to be an independent contractor or consultant doing something that previously you did in a traditional work setting. For instance, I worked for a non-profit managing their database and writing fund appeals. After I had my first daughter, I freelanced and wrote fundraising letters for non-profits that paid me by the hour or by the project. Freelance isn't a specific job but a way of working and can indicate that you are self-employed. Hope this helps.

I have been a freelance writer for about 12 years now (currently working on an article about RVing and families).

I got into it by pitching an article about stunt kites (a popular activity on Cape Cod). The editor I sent it to gave me the green light. They liked my style and versatility and I have been writing ever since.

Pitch an idea that you like. Tell them how the article will flow, where you will get your contacts and how the sidebars (break out boxes) will look.

This was my latest article: http://www.capecodonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/2...

Good luck!

Freelance just means that you don't work for anyone. You find your work, you do your work, and then you find more. Freelance usually comes with an occupation after it, like "freelance photographer" or "freelance graphic artist."

If you love typing, you may want to try medical transcription. My mom used to do it. At least when she did it, doctors would record their notes on a tape recorder, and she'd type them up. I think now you can get training for it, but she didn't do anything like that, so I'm not sure how it works nowadays.

I have done freelance work at home ever since my first son was born. It is basically contract work for a person or company. Some people do billing or book work for offices or even sewing, photography, whatever. I do freelance graphic design and illustration.

For a lot of freelance work you need some sort of experience or schooling. I am not sure what your talents are or what type of education you have but sit down and think about it. You will be amazed at what people will pay for. My girlfriend picks up laundry from people, takes it home, washes it and returns it. So the simplest things can work.

Good luck!

Hi Brandy, I am a freelance photographer. I am in business for myself and don't don't have an employer. I pay for my ads, get my own jobs, write my own contracts, and collect my pay.

Do you have an art or skill you could incorporate into working for yourself?

My background is in the legal field. After having our first child, I stayed home and freelanced summarizing depositions.

Due to the downturn in the economy, my company filed bankruptcy and I was laid off last year. I now work from home and develop my own businesses. I love it.

I believe one of the keys to working from home or perhaps 2 keys is first decide on your goal as to how much you would like to make and two put together a time schedule and treat like business.

Good luck

Freelancing will require professional experience. I am a freelance public relations writer. I have a degree in journalism and almost 20 years of experience working in public relations and journalism.

To freelance, you need to have a marketable skill, such as writing (again, not just an interest in it, but professional expertise), graphic design or web design. Freelance is generally used when talking about creative fields. You're self-employed and market your expertise to companies, individuals and other client bases.

I would get started with the site www.wahm.com for some ideas for applying your typing skills to a work-from-home position or independent contractor role. One starting point to investigate might be a virtual assistant career (depending on your professional background and whether you have administrative skills).
