Frozen Breast Milk Donation

I have over 1500 oz of breastmilk that I would love to donate, it is properly stored and labeled but I just surprizingly am overwhelmed by the amount of places you can send it too. I would rather get a recomendation from someone who has done this and had a good experience with a company, or if you have had a bad experience. I live in the midwest so I am sure I will have to ship the milk out. Thanks for any help.

What can I do next?

Check with your local hospitals who have NICU's. I had a friend who was a good milk producer and she actually pumped and gave to a local hospital. They will use it for the preemies. Good luck.

If there is a large, NICU near you, they may take it.

I do know of a woman who may still need more milk. She physically cannot nurse and her child is on exclusive breastmilk through donations. Would you like me to find out for you? Normally she only accepts milk from women she knows, but you never know :)

I sent my nearly 800oz to the Mother's Milk Bank of North Texas (google them for more info). I like that they use it in NICU centers in the United States. It was a very easy process (I sent in 2 shipments) and they provide all packing and will reimburse for dry ice. There is a blood test that will be taken at a lab in your area.

What a wonderful gift to give!

Great decision! I donated via the Human Milk Banking Association of North America... they are affiliated with reputable milk banks.

Check this list and just choose the site closest to you. http://www.hmbana.org/index/locations/

I donated to the Bronson Mother's Milk Bank in Kalamazoo, Mich. That might be the closest one to you as well. They are WONDERFUL and very helpful by phone and e-mail. There are some guidelines you'll have to follow, and you'll have to get some blood drawn by your doctor (mine did this free - no copay; the milk bank sent the vials and shipping container) and sent to the milk bank for screening before they will take your milk. They WILL take milk you've already expressed and stored, assuming you pass the blood screen (can't remember what they were looking for). Then they will send you a cooler to pack up your milk in, and pre-paid UPS shipping labels.
