Ugg, It's almost as bad as asking if i could be pregnant,

My brain is just fried, and i have zero good ideas. If anyone could please help.

i need gift for my cousin's only daughter, She will be one year old. They flew here and will be flying home, not to mention they live in a tiny apartment. I gave books at Christmas so would like to do something different but am totally stuck. $10-$20 Range, probably not clothes and not a gift card if i can help it.

What would be a nice gift under these circumstances?

Thank you so much!!

What can I do next?

Honestly, a one year old isn't even going to know the difference. I would just ask the mom what she'd like her to have. Tell her you're considering traveling, etc and you are stumped. If it were me, I would just give her a $20 in a card. Good luck!

How about a cloth doll? That's about the only thing I can remember my girls caring about when they were one. Or, maybe stacking cups or blocks. They sure did love those too! Stacking cups are just a few dollars.

I agree with MzKitty. Ask the mother what she'd like her daughter to have.

There are DVD's called Praise Baby. My 15 month old loves them. There are praise songs sang by a soothing woman's voice along with children. And the video's have children playing, swimming, climbing, rolling balls, peek a boo, adults interacting, and nature/ animal scenes etc. His interest is held which can be a challenge for him. Highly recommend. www.praisebaby.com

How about making a book for her with pictures of family members? You could laminate 'book size' (1/2 sheet - back to back with a space down the middle so that you can cut and get 4 pages out of each laminated sheet) pages, punch 2 holes in them and secure with those hinged rings that snap together (kind of like a key ring, but without all of the around and around)...you could make it your own 'Goodnight moon' (hide a mouse or cat or star or something) and say 'Goodnight Grandma, Goodnight Auntie V...'

Another idea is to hit Goodwill. Things for that age group end up looking like new...

Good luck!

Friends got DD a cup, plate, bowl, spoon/knife/fork set from IKEA. I wouldn't have thought to do so, but DD loved it.

If they are flying, maybe a mini pillow pet?

My DD also likes the fridge magnets. I wouldn't be concerned that they are for 2s. 1s can play with them just fine. The LeapFrog ones are constructed such that the magnets are not accessible to little people.

Or maybe something sent to their home, like Mable's Labels? Toddlers collect things (like sippy cups and snack cups) and everybody uses the same stuff. The labels wear really well (ours get thrown around, stuffed in the dishwasher, roll around the car...still look great) and they're great for play dates or daycare. Not to mention, labels take up no room.

There's a little tea set at toys r us that plays music 1 teapot, 2 tea cups and some little plastic cakes. That was a hit with my DD. Another idea is one of those large sets of oversized legos, she can stack them and sort them. And the best invention of all time to my DD of 17 months, BUBBLES and bubble makers. Goodness, all I seem to do is break out the bubbles these days and it started at 1! Good luck!

Picture frame?

My neighbors gave my daughter a small table with 4 chairs ( all plastic) for her 1 yr birthday. No idea what it costs but more than $20. Long story short, my daughter is 17 now.... that table and chairs was handed down to the neighbors next door with 3 girls 6-10 and it is still in their back yard with chairs being used.

Another toy our daughter loved but we did get tired of was a small keyboard that played songs and she could pick out the tunes on the keyboard.

Good luck.

Some ideas that worked for us. Hair bows and accessories. Play jewelry - dress up items. I know you said no clothes but with summer coming, what about a bathing suit or cover up and some water toys. Summer toys - bucket and shovel (might be too hard to pack in a suit case). DVDs - especially music and dance ones - Laurie Berkner is such a favorite of mine and all my friends. If you have time, put a photo book together for her to look at on the plane and she'll have a it as a keepsake. Take family photos and add names to them and decorations to the photo book. Hope this helps...Best wishes!

LeapFrog Phonics Fridge Magnets. My son got a set when he was a year old (he's about to turn 11) and my 8 year old dd still uses them. My nephews play with them when they visit as well.
