Has Anyone Tried G Diapers? - Emmaus,PA

I'm having my second baby in July and have read a little bit about G diapers. I'm intrigued but a little skeptical that they won't leak. I also wonder if maybe they're better for girls than boys. From my own experience and from my friends' experiences, it seems as if boys are more likely than girls to pee strong enough that it goes right out of the side of the diaper. Has anyone tried G diapers? I'd love to know what you thought of them.

I haven't tried them personally since I use Fuzzi Bunz but have a few friends who use them and do like them a lot. I met Kim, one of the owners, at an event in NYC and she gave me a bunch of coupons. I think I am all out but we have chatted a number of times and I could get you some if you are interested, just e-mail me directly. The people at this company are really great and Kim said she would be happy to talk anyone through fitting their child or any concerns.

I haven't tried G diapers. However, from the boy perspective versus girls, it is not so much stronger as more a matter of aim with the boys. They'll pee whichever way they are pointed so if they are pointed to the side, it is more likely to leak out that side.

Good luck.

I have heard really great things about them. I never tried them with my oldest because we had already tried and rejected cloth. I didn't want to spend the money and decided I didn't like those either. I will probably try the G diapers when this new baby is about 3 months. good luck!

We used Gdiapers on our twins who are now 21 months old. I had problems at first when they were little and used kissaluvs for the first 3 months (which I HIGHLY recommend with newborns with hemp liners) and then we used Fuzzy Buns (another I highly recommend) along with Gdiapers. WE couldn't afford the cost of Gdiaper inserts to use them as our everyday diaper, but we did use them when traveling and going out because they worked so well. They do work better for older babies and you really do need to follow the instructions when putting them on. They say to not pull the tabs tight and it's true. The tighter you try to put them on, the more likely they will leak. If you can afford to use them all the time, they are wonderful because they are so much safer for the environment. Good luck!

I am a cloth diapering mom...to three boys(youngest is only 15 days old). I find that with the cloth diapers I have less poo-up-the-back accidents and also when I have used newborn diapers on my little one the poo sticks to his butt but in the cloth it doesn't do that.
I use what many refer to the 'workhorse' diapers...they are inexpensive, simple, and super soft. Sandy's Bamboo diapers by MotherEase- I use the XS on my newborn and there is TONS of room for him to grow. These diapers require a cover but it is crazy simple. You can get some great cloth diapering information from Lisa Clarke of Green Earth Baby here in Pittsburgh. You can even schedule a time to meet with her at her home to see, feel, and even try out different styles of diapers, covers etc. She is the one who first introduced me to cloth diapers. www.greenearthbaby.com

Good luck with your disposable diaper alternative search!!!

Also on a side note...I noticed one of the replies said to put the soiled diapers in a pail of water until time to wash. This is not necessary. We use what is called 'wet bags' they are a special fabric that will not let wetness leak out of it and it just hangs in our bathroom. It does not close up so the moisture is able to get out and the diapers NEVER smell. And on wash day I just carry the bag to the washer hold upside down and let it empty into the machine and I'm done. Having a pail of water is dangerous with children around due to the risk of drowning and standing water is unsanitary.

We just started them a few months ago. My daughter is 11 months now. We really like them, but I think it takes some practice to figure out how to dispose them (toilets don't flush well enough in our household to go that route)and clean them best. I often use a wet wipe to clean them rather than change the liner between every diaper change. I do love the idea that we will be able to compost them.

We do regular diapers at nighttime and keep some handy in the diaper bag in case we have a leak out-and-about. Yet, once you get used to how to fit the G diapers to your baby, that don't leak very often, unless you are very delayed in your diaper change. I also like to have some regular diapers around in case we have a really goopy poopy day :) We are still figuring it all out, but think it has been worth the money and time.

Also, on a side note, they are a bit bigger than regular diapers, so our daughter had to go up a pant size when we switched.

I am a devout cloth diaper mom, but a couple of summers ago I bought g-diapers for a two week trip. They were fantastic! They fit my chubby boy very well and never had a blow out or leak. I was very pleased and impressed.
Now, maybe compared to conventional disposables g-diapers are not all that impressive- I don't know.

Hi M.,

We had a horrible time with G Diapers, so I stopped using them. But my son was bigger when I first heard about them (he was already into the 30+ lb. diapers when we tried them), so maybe that was the problem, though he was in the correct weight range to wear them. He was absolutely soaked when he woke up in the morning and was miserable, so I gave up on them. Sounds like others with smaller children did just fine though. I like the idea of them, but they didn't work for us. I hate that they are sitting here not being used. Sooo...

If anyone in our area would like to purchase it for $10, I will deliver it to you if you are within 45 minutes of us here at McGuire Air Force Base. Our starter kit is size large (26-36 lbs.) I paid $22 for it at Wegmans. It has everything that came in the original package except for one diaper insert. The outer parts are in exceptional condition~some were never used. If anyone wants them, please send me a message. I'll be happy to deliver them to you if you are within 45 minutes of me (Trenton, Hamilton, Princeton, Mt. Holly, Mt. Laurel, Burlington, Moorestown, etc.).

i started using g diapers when my daughter reached about 8 lbs after she was born. i think they work great and are very comfortable. after a while we stopped buying the inserts and started using cloth diapers in them. they worked awesome and friends of mine started doing the same thing. it saves a lot of money! (tip; throw the wet diapers in a pale of water til you wash them so they don't smell) each size lasts a long time, and you need about 5 diapers to always have enough dry clean ones available. we bought one starter kit from whole foods and then a three pack off the website. and a bulk order of inserts if you want to go that direction. good luck!

Hi, I've never used the G diapers, but I do use cloth diapers & I love them. I use prefolds with a diaper cover on my son & he leaked less with them than any of the disposable diapers. The only disposable brand he did not have leaks with was Luvs. THe only way you are really going to know if you like them is if you try them out. Maybe you can buy just a couple & give them a try, using some disposables as a back up. One more thing. Every baby is different. I've read sites where people say the only brand that didn't leak for their son were the huggies or the pampers (which were horrible for us). On cloth diaper sites people have written that the bum genius diapers are the best, leak free diaper. (I bought one & my son leaked terribly with it). Every child has a different wetting pattern. That's how so many different companies can stay in business. So, just because something works (Or didn't work) for someone else doesn't mean it won't (or will) work for you. Trial & Error is best. I'm sorry this wasn't more helpful. I hope you give the G diapers (or some other environmentally friendly system) a try. Its good for the world.

I've used cloth prefolds with waterproof covers for my son from birth and have tried the same system on vacation and trips. I did purchase the G starter pack and refills for a two two-weeks trip and they worked well (a few insignificant leaks) for daytime use. For nighttime, they really didn't work well compared to the cloth. The inserts tend to be long for the covers and waterproof liners so for our boy, I folded the extra length of insert at the front to make it more absorbable. They worked ok overall, but I'm pretty hooked on the cloth. Also, the idea behind them seems to be more environmentally conscious as opposed to healthier for baby. See the previous response with regard to the gelling agents, which have been shown to be harmful. I hate to think we bought the covers and aren't using them so lately we'll use the G covers and waterproof liners with our prefolds (folded in thirds) sometimes. I hope this helps.

My son had a horrible time with them. I had the small size for when he was newborn and then bought the mediums for when he was a little older, since I had a credit from returning the small inserts.

I honestly tried everything because I WANTED to use them but they leaked almost every single time with pee (unless I changed them every two hours, which at $.30/insert is SO expensive) and with poo, it was a total mess. I even tried troubleshooting with the customer service (they are very nice) but nothing worked. I gave up on them months ago and now use Huggies. I would NOT recommend them, but I do wonder whether it was the fact that my son pees a lot (sometimes he leakes through his Huggies diaper at night).

Here is my thought. You may like it, you may not so please feel free to take it or leave it.

There are harmful gels in the disposable diapers on the market. While the "G" Diapers cut enivronmental waste significantlly by only tossing part of the whole unit and the tossing part is a faster biodegradable consistancy, I would not use them becuase they are made with the same harmful ingredients in the gels that keep me from using/promoting disposables in the first place. Rise in asthma, rise in male infertility, dioxins -- are three reasons not to use disposable or g.
In my opinion the G stands for green washing. It is sort of like buying a product and it says made with Organic ingredients, they charge you for the organic pricing, but the remainder of the ingredients are non organic, thus making the overall product not organic at all. = Green washing.

Cloth are very close to G's in the manner that they are used. You could find a huge assortment of cloth making wahm's out there, build your stash and if your planning on another baby tuck them away for the next one.

I think it is great that you are considering or interested in G's, just hoping that you can take the research just a bit further and find a really healthy alternative for your new arrival.

"TIME" Magazine had an article on Cloth Diapers and G diapers in the Jan 21st Issue. It was pretty intersting to see cloth hit time.

Good luck in your search. If I can point you in a direction to view some cloth please feel free to email me at ____@____.com.

We used Gdiapers with our twin boys (now 18 months) off and on.

Pluses:
- Environmentally good.
- Easy to flush (but make sure you have good plumbing. If you can't flush a tampon or your toilet clogs a lot, flushing gdiapers will be a problem.)
- Cute colors.

Minuses:
- Like someone else said, as newborns, they leaked a lot and the poo was more difficult to deal with. We ended up using Pampers mostly.
- Added labor. This is more of an issue with twins, I'd guess, but it was just one more thing to do to wash the covers, reload the diapers, snap in the liners, etc. When we were going through 20+ diapers a day, it was really too much work.

They've outgrown them now, but overall I'd recommend them. We ended up using them quite a bit as they got older, their poo got more solid and less frequent. I would use gdiapers at home with them and then seventh generation outside the house and at night.

Good luck! Feel free to email for more details.

I have them, and I have used them. They are terrible for newborns, in my opinion, because the diaper doesn't fit very well, and emptying the insert into the toilet is terribly messy with breastfed baby poo. Later, however, when baby is a little older, it's not so bad. Of course, we also EC our DD, so the only thing we've had in a gDiaper is a little bit of pee here or there. And that's actually my complaint about gDiapers. The inserts are large and absorbent. When she has just a tiny tinkle, it only wets maybe 1/4th of the insert. To dispose of the whole thing seems incredibly wasteful (based on the cost of the inserts). Also - while I've never tried them overnight, I have heard they hold up great overnight if you place 2 inserts inside the diaper, even for super soakers - boys or girls. I've never had it leak. The design is actually pretty decent. Even better, if you like, rather than use the insert, you can take an infant or preemie size prefold diaper, fold it in thirds and use it as an insert ... turning the cover into simple cloth diaper cover. They wash/wear well, and the new design is much much nicer than the older design (and fit better, too).

That said, the insert (because it and the cover are wide) has a tendency to bunch between the legs, which could lead to some overflow - and which I would think would be slightly uncomfortable.

Like disposables, however, they have a stay-dry feel.

Hope that helps!

I love G diapers, I've used them with my now 18 mos old. I started using them when she was about 9 mos. The only time I had leaks was when I didn't pull the fabric out of the liner properly. She's too big for them now so we've switched to 7th generation. Good luck!
