I am wondering what you mamas think about the DVD's Your Baby Can Read. I don't personally know anyone who has tried it and would like a first hand testimonial.

Thanks!

WHY??? Your baby IS reading... the look in your eyes, the feel of your touch, the tone of your voice, the scratchiness of the ground he crawls on, the solidness of the ground when his unstable steps plant his bottom there, the smell of the puppy he snuggles. Let him experience the world around him and please, please, please stay away from trying to create proteges... in the long run kids who are pushed to learn certain things before they're developmentally ready get short circuited in the their hard-wiring. Let those synapses grow through natural life experience. Read Joseph Chilton Pierce's "The Magical Child" before investing in any "program".

My friend's two year old has been using it for the last month and while he's not "reading" anything yet, his language skills have improved greatly because of hearing and seeing the words and associating them with the pictures!

To respond to the comment about it being memorization, as an educator, I will tell you that most children who "read" their first books know them only from memorization anyway!(from hearing Mom and Dad read them over and over again!) Also, any kindergarten teacher will tell you that children recognize "sight words" before they can actually read anything using phonics. This system gives children a head-start to making the connection between the written word, sound and pictures.

I would hesitate recommending this to anyone who is looking for a babysitter for their child, but as an educational tool, it seems like a great system! Of coures, parents should not neglect utlizing other learning activities with their children such as reading and exploring their world. If children are going to be watching TV, I would prefer them to be learning something. One of the things that is great about the "Your Baby Can Read" system is it also incorporates books and flash cards into the learning tools. I recently ordered it for my 9 month old. We have not started the program yet but I am excited to use it!

Good luck, whatever you decide!

i am currently using it since december. my grandson is 20 months old and he is doing great. he reconginzes about 40 words now. of course hsi speech isnt that developed but he recongizes the words and says them the best he can. you just have to be consistent and do it all the tiem but the most important thing is to make it fun. if he doesnt want to do it we do it later. at first hsi attention span was about 5 minutes nowhe asks for to read. i think he has also memorized two of his books because he tells me what is going to be on the next page.

My Daughter is now 17 months and my Grandson is 5 yrs they both use the system. We have seen the improvement in my Daughters speech and how she can actually pronounce the words she is hearing and seeing. I love that she also asks for it by putting her arms in the "up" position and says "arms up". They watch it 2 times a day every day....

Also a good one... by Baby Einstiens is "See and Sign".
My kids both know and use the sign language! I love when my Daughter wants ice she will say ice and then sign the word "please".

Hope you enjoy them if you decide to buy them. I do know it is alot to pay for the Your baby can read but you can make 3 payments of 66.65. That is what we did.

From what I can tell it's a system based on memorization alone and there are no phonetic skills taught. If a child grows up only knowing words because of memorization and is not taught phonetic skills to decode them, it is going to hinder their reading. I, personally, would skip it and just read to your child daily. You can also get alphabet letter puzzles and things like that if you really feel the need, but at 1 1/2, I wouldn't push it.

The people I know who taught their babies to "sign" say it is a better use of your time. What is the benefit of your child reading early? If he is ahead of all of his classmates, he will be bored. Music is another good thing to teach your child instead of pushing him ahead of his peers.
