Heartburn Help

I'm 34 weeks pregnant and having bad heartburn and acid reflux. My throat hurts, I'm coughing, and my chest feels like it's burning almost all the time. I'm not eating anything spicy or unusual, in fact I rarely feel like eating. Tums aren't cutting it anymore. Is there anything else I can take or do I just have to wait it out? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I think now that my heartburn really isn't as bad as all of yours! I'll try your suggestions and talk to my doctor. Only 4 1/2 weeks to go, anyway. I can take it :)

I had it really bad the last 4 months. I was prescribed Prevacid but they gave me really bad cramps(which is a side affect) so I stopped taking them as I feared having a miscarriage.

I hated tums or rolaids and I ended up buying a nice big cushiony Recliner and slept in that thing until I had the baby. I had to sleep sitting up most of the time.

For acid reflux/heartburn, I started taking 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. I know it sounds/tastes horrible but it works for me and the pain is gone in 15-30 seconds. It doesn't work for everybody but it did for me.

Awww-I feel for you. I just had my baby in Feb. and I had the WORST heartburn since I was 20 weeks prego. I tried everything and some things worked temporarily and some not at all. Talk to your OB dr-my doctor started me on Reglan 30 mins before each meal and it was my miracle pill. I heard about the prevacid but I didn't like the side effects it carried and the only side effect I got from the reglan was my milk started leaking early since it is used to increase supply also. Remember only a little longer to go-I know it is so miserable but it will be all worth it when you have that beautiful HEALTHY baby in your arms. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!

My doctors assured me that it was completely safe to take Prevacid while pregnant, so I was prescribed that. Instant relief! Unfortunately, the heartburn didn't go away after my pregnancies so I still take it. If I forget for a day or two, the heartburn comes right back. It really works wonders, in my opinion. Good luck!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh do I feel for you right now! I had the same exact thing and the only thing people ever told me when I mentioned it rather than give advice was .... You are going to have a hairy baby! They were right- full head of hair! lol I eventually talked to my Dr and here are some of the things I did that he suggested....

I did find that sleeping on my left side with my head just slightly elevated helped. I would have to put a pillow kindda under my belly though or I would roll over from the size and 2 small pillows between my knees.

I also would chew sugar free spearamint gum and for some reason it helped... the rest of the time I just chewed on Rolaids (cherry is the least chalky)... I cant stand the chalkiness of the Tums.

Grazing all day rather than eating meals. I stopped eating all fruits and although I could not stop drinking soda I cut back. I would also make sure I drank plent of water!

The day before I had an emergency c-section (34 weeks) he prescribed something for me since it started to get worse again... I wish I could remember the name but I never got to take it! lol

I would call your OB in the morning and ask for something that would be safe for both you and your baby. Also, if you plan on BF make sure it will be safe for then too since you are so close to the end of the pregnancy.
Good luck and many blessings!

Experiencing heartburn is linked to fear. So think about what would help you let go of your fears. I highly recomend using relaxation recordings daily. I first used them when I was pregnant & you can find them online or in bookstores.

I had really bad heart burn too. You can try not eating too close to bed time, trying to prop your head up while sleeping.
The thing that really worked for me was cutting down on carbs (sugar).
Good luck to you!

Hello! If you haven't done this already, try sitting straight up or just be completely upright for at least an hour after eating. Hopefully, this is all you need to do! It worked for me while I was pregnant and even now.

Good luck to you and your family!!

I'm in nearly the same boat you are. I'm just about 24 weeks though and I know it's only going to get worse. I had terrible heartburn with my last pregnancy (my daughter who is now 2) and this was the part I dreaded about getting pregnant again. Ugh! All I can say is Mylanta is my friend. I always take a swig of it before I lay down and have found that it responds to the heartburn much quicker than Tums does (though I use those too at times). Doc said Mylanta is fine and belive me - I used BOTTLES of it with my first pregnancy. The orange cream is my favorite, but it's kinda hard to find. Good luck!
