Help for 5 Year Old's Dry, Itchy Scalp

Hi Everyone!

My 5 year old has has scalp issues for quite some time. She always had cradle cap as an infant and it just turned into contact dermatitis as she got older (patches of dry flaky skin on her scalp). That seems to have gotten better. I see some patchy stuff on her scalp but it's nothing that is flaking at all. She is itchy on top though...I have checked for lice so I know it's not that. Her scalp isn't particularly red, it just appears to be dry and itchy. She swims almost everyday so I thought that might be making her scalp dryer. I guess I'm just looking for a little advice on a good conditioner to put on or leave in....should I rub olive oil into her scalp in the evening? Thank you in advance for any advice.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone who has replied (and done research for me...wow :o) I will try the Neutrogena T-Gel (which I already have) a couple times per week and see how it goes!!

J.,
Try a Tea Tree Oil Shampoo. Paul Mitchell makes a great one. It will tingle her scalp a bit, but it will really help the itching.
Good Luck!

I heard that tea tree oil is great for the scalp and great for dandruff, maybe it will work for dry scalp......And google conditioners for swimmers and see what you come up with that way too! You can mix the tea tree oil with her shampoo too.......or use it as a massage oil......it also is great for kids too because it helps prevent lice...that and coconut smelling hair products......

I am going to use both of those things when my son goes to school in 3 weeks, regulary, I DO NOT want to deal with lice!

I used Selsum Blue on my hair and my kids hair twice a week. I use about a dime squeeze on mine and about 1/2 of that on theirs. Then I use their regular shampoo and conditioner. It's been working for us. I hope you can find something to work for you.

My daughter has that problem & has had it all her life, shes 17. We have had a lot of success with T-Gel. It is a little stinky but they have a conditioner that smells nice. Once you get it under control you can go down to once a week like we are doing. Good luck. PS. maybe you could take a break from swimming & see if that helps, the chlorine can be very drying.

My advice to you is to purchase hair products that have a natural oil base in them in order to help moisturize your daughters hair. I recommend purchasing the Envia Nature’s Salon™ Shampoo -- Hydrating from Melaleuca.
They do have a conditioner as well.
If you take the time to look at the products from the following web link, I believe that you will find more products that could help your daughters initial dry scalp problem:

I hope this infomration has been helpful!

My daughter swims daily and has had a lot of problems with dry scalp. The trick is to condition it daily and spray a leave in conditioner in her hair before she goes swimming.

Hi J.,

From what I've read, scalp problems aren't related to a lack of moisture, but rather to a yeast infection. I have had excellent results using Neutrogena TGel shampoo twice a week, leaving it on for 10 minutes each time. It's kind of a pain, but it has definitely cured the problem.

Here's some info from WebMD:

Simple Solutions
Find it in Head & Shoulders Dry Scalp Care Shampoo and Conditioner ($5 each; at drugstores); both products deposit tiny yeast destroying particles of the active ingredient on the scalp, where they remain until you’re able to shampoo again.

Use stylers sparingly Gels, mousses, and pomades can trap sebum and exacerbate flaking.

Minimize scalp oil - If your hair still looks greasy despite daily cleansing, spritz on Biolage Scalpthérapie Cooling Mint Oil Control Treatment ($16; biolage.com for salons), a spray with sebum-absorbing glycerin.

EXPERT STRATEGY
“It’s a myth that dandruff is caused by a dry scalp,” says Zoe Draelos, M.D. “It’s the result of a buildup of yeast, and it needs to be treated with a medicated shampoo at least twice a week.”

The bottom line The scalp sheds skin cells daily, so a bit of flaking is inevitable. But if you notice lots of flakes on your clothing or find yourself constantly itching, take action. All that scratching will aggravate your condition and could cause split ends.

Good luck,
J.

my daughter had the same problem when she was little. very bad cradle cap and it actually moved on to have ezcema on different areas of her body! we tried the special shampoos in the store and even the steroid creams that the dr's prescribed (which are a waste of money by the way!). i finally found inkomfe! inkomfe has shampoos and conditioners, lotion, bars of soap for all skin irritations and problems. we have quite a success rate small children and pregnant women because there are no steroids in the products. go to www.inkomfe-usa.com. they are really great products! i still use them on my daughter, who is 5 1/2 now and she is clear of any ezcema problems. you can use MAMASOURCE and receive 10% off your order! let me know how it works out for you! if you want i can send you a sample to try. just let me know!!

Buy her a swim cap. It could be the chemicals causing an allergic reaction. Then get some green tea and aloe lotion and put it on her head before bedtime and leave it over night. Rinse it out in the morning if her hair is to greasy. If not then just leave it in. It heals most anything.
