Most search engines rate items based on how many places out there have links to them. So have friends and family add your www address to their site. Also for fees you can get to the top of the lists in that featured section. Depending on the Search engine will determine how much it will cost. Hope that helps!

Hi L. - what kind of business did you start? Can you post it here for all of us? I always like to support Mom companies, so I would definitely like to know what it is you're selling.

Getting up in search engines is hard (and expensive) - I wouldn't concentrate all your efforts there. Look into swapping banner ads with other companies that have a similar customer base. I have a company that mainly targets working moms with infants-preschoolers. We're just now getting our website up and running - I'd be willing to talk about a banner ad exchange with you (though two newbies on the internet may not help us out). There are many companies that are in the banner exchange market.

Another good way to generate traffic is through bloggers - get your product/website out to these people - they're early adopters, movers and shakers, etc. and can really help drive traffic.

Don't overlook print advertising either. I visit a lot of sites that I see listed in newspapers, magazines, etc.

There are so many other ways to drive traffic to your website other than search engines, so make sure you're looking at a multi-pronged approach in your marketing.

Good luck! S.

There is a way to buy admission to the top searchable search engines. I've seen it run from $50 to $100 a year. If I find a link I'll post it. I'm sure you could always google it. I also asked a web designer and jewelry maker her advice since she knows a lot about this stuff. Her reply:

"
There are a lot of these services around, but a lot of them are a bit 'scammy' or guarantee things which just can't be guaranteed. The service I've been using for years to promote the sites I'm involved with to search engines is http://selfpromotion.com - it's run by one person and he gives a lot of really helpful information (although the way he lays his site out makes it a bit hard to read at times!).

Also he asks for a donation rather than setting a fixed prices for his services - if you make a donation of over US$10 he gives you access for a year to a whole lot of extra tools he's built to help promote your site (or several sites - you can promote any number of them using one account).

So that's definitely the one I'd recommend."

There are several ways to help your website you can do Adwords and pay per click (keywords) thru Google. Now if you use google I suggested that you set yourself a daily, weekly or monthly budget something that you can afford. You can alway change this as time goes on it's very flexable. You can do free ads just (google) free advertisting online and there are websites that you can place your website or ad for a small fee.
There are business that make websites and/or will put your site out on the internet. Again you will have to speak to them because they are all different. Put an ad in your local information magazine I use the one in my area it is called Caroline Review they are very reasonable it cover all of Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey. Tell your friends, join network groups,do flyers. Open a Facebook and Twitter account you also can blog. Word of mouth work's great also. Try Google Local Business Center and put your website and your company business information on it's free. I hope this was helpful.

Yep, links to you will help. It can take a long time (on google esp.). I have spent years and lots of money trying to get rankings. I have been successful at times, then things can change and your site can vanish again. I am in a very comeptetive industry though. If you are in a less comepetitve industry, it can be quite easy.

Also, as mentioned, you can pay for rankings. These are the sites that show up on the side when you do a search. You pay per click (each time someone clicks on your site.) The more you pay, the higher your site will be. It too can be very expensive if you don't know what you are doing.

There are many sites and forums on this subject online. One that is particularly helpful is www.highrankings.com Go to the forum, read up, then ask questions. The members are very helpful.
